The Oppo R15 and R15 Dream Mirror Edition are what the OnePlus 6 could look like (Update)

Update (03/21): Oppo's official press release is making the rounds and shed a bit more light on the recently announced R15 and R15 Dream Mirror Edition.

First up, the R15 will be available in four colors: Rouge Red, Frost White, Nebula Purple, and Ruby Red. The R15 Dream Mirror Edition, meanwhile, will not have Frost White as a color option.

As for naming conventions, the R15 Dream Mirror Edition will seemingly be known as the R15 Pro for the rest of the world.

Finally, Oppo talks a big game with regards to the cameras. Assuming the feature works as it does on Huawei's Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro, the R15 and R15 Pro's rear cameras feature AI-enhanced scenario recognition that change up the ISO, shutter speed, and saturation.

Unlike the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro, there is no mention of a neural processing unit (NPU) on the R15 and R15 Pro. As such, we do not know whether the feature will work as well on Oppo's smartphones.

Original coverage (03/19): Because Oppo and OnePlus are sister companies, Oppo's flagship smartphones usually lend some insight into what to expect from the next OnePlus smartphone. That could very well be the case again with the Oppo R15 and R15 Dream Mirror Edition.

Both phones feature a notch at the top — a design aesthetic that some upcoming flagship smartphones look to adopt. We can debate the merits of the notch all day long, but at least the R15's notch is not as wide as it could have been and only includes the front camera, earpiece, and sensors.

Taking a look at the specs, the R15 and R15 Dream Mirror Edition are mostly the same. Apart from sounding like an anime, the R15 Dream Mirror Edition swaps out the R15's Helio P60 processor for a Snapdragon 660.

The R15 Dream Mirror Edition also features a 16 + 20 MP primary camera setup, while the R15 makes do with its dual 12 + 5 MP configuration around back. Weirdly enough, the R15 Dream Mirror Edition includes a slightly smaller 3,400 mAh battery, though both phones are sadly charged through microUSB.

Other differences include the R15 Dream Mirror Edition's ceramic back, Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity, and 8 MP face portrait mode.

The R15 and R15 Dream Mirror Edition will sell for CNY 2,999 ($474) and CNY 3,299 ($521) when sales open on April 1.

Arguably more important than the phones are the groundwork they presumably lay for the OnePlus 6. The OnePlus 5 being visually identical to Oppo's R11 was no coincidence, which means the OnePlus 6 could end up being the R15's doppelgänger.

Editor's Pick

As such, we can expect the OnePlus 6 to feature a notch, for better or for worse. The phone is also expected to include the Snapdragon 845, USB Type-C, and a headphone jack.

We do not have to wait long to learn more about the OnePlus 6. Because rumors have come in much earlier than usual this year, the phone might be announced sometime before June. Even if that is not the case, we expect to learn more sometime this summer.
