Mobile photography company Moment has launched a new Kickstarter for a smartphone camera accessory that's said to deliver cinema-quality recording capabilities.
The $149 anamorphic lens add-on is compatible with Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy devices, allowing them to shoot super wide videos (2.40:1 aspect ratio), complete with lens flares—similar to what you might see in a Hollywood movie.
The lens is available as part of the Moment Filmmaker Collection, which also includes necessary cases to attach the lens to smartphones, as well as a universal gimbal counterweight.
You can see what lens is capable of in Moment's Kickstarter pitch video below. It's packed with great footage, but the overall quality will vary depending on what smartphone you shoot with: it's compatible specifically with the Pixel, Pixel 2, Galaxy S8/S8 Plus, Galaxy S9/S9 Plus, and Galaxy Note 8 (plus iPhones).
The guys also use a gimbal when filming, which is what helps make the camera movement so smooth—if you want the same effect, you'll have to pick one up separately.
Pitch videos are crucial on Kickstarter and, since this campaign concerns a video product, the team has been able to put together a good one. This isn't Moment's first rodeo either, it has created three successful Kickstarters for camera products previously.
It's little surprise, then, that the campaign has received more than $500,000 (of a $50,000 goal) with 23 days still to go. The news that Steven Soderbergh's latest film was shot on an iPhone with help from Moment's lenses probably also hasn't hurt publicity.
Shipping on the new Moment lens is set for June and you can pre-order one now for $145 with the required camera case ($35-off the MSRP of the bundle) at the official Kickstarter page. Let us know what you guys think of the campaign in the comments.
