- A teardown of the camera app in the Sony Xperia XZ2 reveals code that hints at a new Sony tablet.
- The code snippets reference an 8-inch and 10-inch tablet, which seems to suggest that a new product is in the works.
- If a new Sony tablet is on the way, it will be the company's first in three years, and it will drop in a market that is not doing well right now.
It's no secret that the Android tablet industry is on life-support. If you don't agree, just take a look at the recent Twitter poll Android Authority conducted on that very topic.
But it seems that either Sony didn't read the poll or is ready to go against the grain, because there's some new information that suggests the company will release a new Android tablet sometime soon, possibly under the XZ2 brand.
In a teardown of the camera app for the new Sony Xperia XZ2 line of smartphones (which isn't getting the best press right now), some savvy coders found the following lines of code:
The images referenced in the code apparently show instructions for how to operate camera features on a tablet device. You can tell from the placement of the front-facing camera:
Obviously, this isn't much to go on. We don't have a name or a release date, but we do have credible evidence that Sony could release a new tablet in 8-inch and 10-inch models.
If this comes to pass, it will be the first Sony tablet to hit the market since the Sony Xperia Z4, which came out in 2015. That tablet got a great review from Android Authority, with the only dings being its average camera and high price. While the tablet market indeed is struggling, Sony could be making a smart move by putting out a powerful and beautiful Android tablet when no other companies are doing so.
What do you think? Would you buy a new 10-inch or 8-inch Sony tablet?
