- To celebrate the release of Ready Player One, Google is offering a ton of discounts at the Google Play Store.
- Movies, books, and games related to Ready Player One in some way are getting large price cuts.
- Google doesn't say how long the discounts will last, so it'd be smart to get on the price drops quickly.
The latest film from blockbuster auteur Steven Spielberg, Ready Player One, hit theatres yesterday. To celebrate the release of the movie, Google is rolling out a ton of discounts on the Google Play Store that tie into the movie's pop-culture references to 80s and 90s nostalgia.
Like most movies nowadays, Ready Player One is based on a novel of the same name, which is available in e-book or audiobook form from Google Play for a steep discount. Also discounted are other books with a similar theme or which served as an obvious inspiration to Ready Player One, like Dune, Ender's Game, Altered Carbon, Stranger in a Strange Land, and Starship Troopers. You can see the full list of discounted books here.
Google is also discounting a lot of the movies referenced by Ready Player One.
A lot of these movies are pure classics, like Blade Runner, Back to the Future, Beetlejuice, The Thing, The Terminator, Ghostbusters, and more. If you somehow have gone your whole life without watching the movies on this list, you really have no excuse now not to watch them. The full list of discounted movies can be found here.
It wouldn't be a celebration of Ready Player One without some heavy discounts on games. Google is slashing prices on classic 80s properties like Golden Axe, Galaga, and of course Pac-Man. But it's also dropping the fee for some newer VR games, like Deep Space Battle VR, Wizard Academy VR, and Ingress.
Ready Player One is set in a dystopian future where people use a virtual reality game to escape the desolation of the real world. Legend states that somewhere in the game is an Easter Egg that, if discovered, allows the finder to inherit vast amounts of wealth. The story revolves around young Wade Watts as he pursues the Easter Egg and meets some new friends and dastardly villains along the way.
The movie is in theatres now and getting halfway decent reviews. Do you have plans to see it this weekend? Let us know in the comments!
