The Samsung Galaxy S5 is a phone close to my heart. Android Authority is your cutting edge guide to the latest Android devices, but it doesn't mean we can't get a bit sentimental now and again.
Why are you getting all misty eyed?
I admit it's strange, but I love this phone. There's one dutifully sitting on the desk next to me right now. When the S8 came out, I stuck with the S5. When I had it stolen in South America, I sourced a new one in the next city. It's the phone for me.
Ok it's not going to give you the mind-blowing levels of functionality that the new S9 can boast, but it still holds its own in most of the metrics.
Samsung Galaxy S5 Spec:
- Android 5.0 Lollipop
- 2.5 GHz Quad-Core Qualcomm® Snapdragon processor
- Rear camera: 16 megapixel; Auto Focus with Flash & Zero Shutter Lag, BIS
- Front camera: 2 megapixel, Full HD recording @30fps with Zero Shutter Lag, BIS
- Screen: 5.1 inch Full HD Super AMOLED (1920 x 1080) display, 441 ppi
- 16GB of Internal Memory
- MicroSD slot (supports up to 128GB)
- Micro-USB (5-pin micro-USB)
What I love about the Galaxy S5 is that it is the last phone in the Samsung S range to have a removable battery. The Galaxy S6 relented to the Apple model and brought in a glass back, so you have to stand by and watch as your battery deteriorates.
Not me. I haven't used a phone charger for years. When the battery runs low I just replace it with a spare, which cost about $8 each. Straight away you're back to 100%. Going out for the day? Pop a spare or two in your pocket. Enjoy a wry smile as your friends crouch in the corner of the bar next to a power outlet.
And what if I'm not as obsessed as you?
Well, this would still make an excellent temporary phone. Imagine you've lost your latest device and are waiting for your pricey contract to run down before you can get a free upgrade. For under $200 you've got a great stop-gap.
You also get six months of free service from FreedomPop. With no contracts or cancellation fees, you can enjoy six full months of free calls, texts, and browsing using the blazing fast 4G LTE network. It's a nice touch.
That type of service plus a new Galaxy S5 would still run you around $664 on the open market. We're spotlighting it today because right now you can get the whole package for just $189.99. That's a 71% saving. I'm quite tempted, just so that my S5 has a playmate.
