Google is hoping to encourage more smartphone users to try out Google Pay with a refer-a-friend promotion that could net you up to $100 to spend on the Play Store.

Google Pay became Android's de facto payment app just over a month ago. The app merges features from Android Pay and Google Wallet including NFC payments, loyalty schemes, and, in the near future, peer-to-peer payments.

While existing Android Pay users have been automatically shifted over to the new app, Google is apparently looking to entice a larger user-base to its new platform. With that goal in mind, Google is offering $10 of Google Play credit to you and any friends or family you've referred until May 14.

To take advantage of the promotion, all you need to do is share your referral code with someone who has never made a payment using Google Pay (or Android Pay) before and get them to input the promo code before the offer ends. Once that's done and the new user makes their first payment, you'll both be awarded $10 of free credit that has to be spent within 28 days, or you lose it forever.

The promotion is running in various regions, including the US, UK, Australia, and Canada. To get started just tap the hamburger menu in the app (the three lines) and hit "Get rewards". If you're a new user looking to grab that $10 bonus then feel free to use the code GFBWBKX7 which is definitely not mine (it is).

If you're thinking of abusing the promotion to get thousands of dollars worth of Play Store credit, then don't bother as Google has placed a total cap of $100. Boo. As noted by the folks at Android Police, however, users who've never touched Android Pay or Google Pay can also pick up an extra $10 by making five payments between now and May 14 via a separate introductory offer.
