Turned off by the notch? Cover it up with this free app!

  • New free app hides the notch with a black bar.
  • Nacho Notch-Notch Hider created by XDA moderator.
  • But will we need it if OEMs include notch toggles?

Love it or loathe it, the notch is 100% here to stay. Whether you blame Essential or Apple for popularizing the notch, the reality is that more and more OEMs are opting for display cutouts. With Google itself looking to integrate notch support even further with Android P, it's only a matter of time before the notch becomes the norm.

Thanks to the work of an XDA-Developers forum moderator, however, you might be able to stave off the notch curse for a little while longer with a new app brilliantly named Nacho Notch-Notch Hider.

Editor's Pick

The free app, created by Zachary Wander, has been designed to hide iPhone X-style notches. It achieves this by placing a thick black line over the status bar and below status indicators such as the battery, network, and clock icons.

The app also won't take up any space in your app drawer, as the feature appears as a toggle in the quick settings menu. Nacho Notch will also disappear when the phone is held in landscape, although you will have to mute a persistent notification to completely forget it's there.

Huawei is the latest to jump on the notch bandwagon, with LG and OnePlus looking set to follow in the near future. It's worth noting that Huawei already has an option for hiding the notch on its recently announced P20 devices, and LG's next flagship reportedly has a similar toggle. Hopefully, all OEMs that embrace #notchlife will include a similar feature, but if not, we'll at least have Nacho Notch as a backup solution.
