Sinji Smart Wifi Camera – Get serious about home security for $60

CCTV is dead. Outdated. Archaic low-quality footage which you have to review the next day just to get an idea if you've missed something. The Sinji Panoramic Smart WiFi Camera is the game-changer to step things up to 21st century.

The camera (or cameras) get put up in the location of your choice, but that's where the similarities with CCTV end. This cool piece of tech gives you live 960p HD streaming to your smartphone via the app. If you don't want to monitor it you can get push notifications via motion sensors. If the lights are off the camera has infrared capabilities. Best of all, there's two way audio to let you speak to whoever might be near the camera.

It boasts the following features:

  • High resolution recording lets you clearly see what's going on in the space you're monitoring
  • Infrared technology enables you to get a good view in light or dark
  • Able to zoom in or rotate the image in the app
  • Connects w/ multiple cameras to monitor multiple rooms in the same app
  • Can save footage onto a microSD card, expandable up to 128GB
  • Sends push notifications when connected to WiFi to alert you to new motion detection
  • Two-way audio communication lets you touch base w/ anybody on the camera side

So if you worry about what your pets get up to you can watch (and even reassure) them. If you're away and there's a break-in, you can record the footage while contacting the police at the same time.

But let's be honest, it really comes into its own when you've left the kids at home. Boy am I glad this tech didn't exist when I was 15! Staying home alone was one of those formative year pleasures. Imagine if your parents could keep an eye on you live, and give you a tongue-lashing without you having to pick up the phone. It's a teenager's nightmare.

Boy am I glad this tech didn't exist when I was 15!

The Sinji Panoramic Smart WiFi Camera would usually cost you $140. You may think that's good value for peace of mind anyway. But for the next few days you can get a massive 57% off the retail price at Tech Deals – You can get pick up this camera for just $60. It's so cheap that you could get two or three to wire up your whole home!

Huawei introduces the MediaPad M3 Lite 10 to its tablet lineup

The Android tablet market might not be what it used to, but that seemingly matters very little to Huawei, which continues to make its mark with the MediaPad M3 Lite 10.

The latest addition to Huawei's MediaPad tablet portfolio, the M3 Lite 10, as the name suggests, packs a 10.1-inch 1920 x 1200 resolution display. Below that display is a home button that doubles as a fingerprint sensor. Around the back is an 8 MP sensor, but selfie lovers will enjoy the 8 MP front-facing shooter.

Continuing our design tour, the 310-gram (0.68-pound) weight of the tablet is plenty light enough for when you want to hold it for an extended period of time. Unfortunately, you cannot rely on USB Type-C when it comes time to charge the M3 Lite 10 – the tablet relies on the older Micro USB standard, likely as a cost-saving measure.

Under the hood, Qualcomm's octa-core Snapdragon 435 and either 3 GB or 4 GB of RAM run the show. The RAM amount depends on the amount of storage you opt for – 3 GB of RAM are available with 16 GB or 32 GB of native storage, while the 4 GB of RAM are reserved for the variant with 64 GB.

Even though the M3 Lite 10 runs EMUI 5.1 on top of Android 7.0 Nougat, the tablet's claim to fame seems to be its four Harman/Kardon front speakers. Similar to the iPad Pro's, the M3 Lite 10's sound output adjusts to what is on your screen and the tablet's orientation. Given the 16:9 ratio of the tablet, however, it might be best to use it horizontally.

The M3 Lite 10 already launched in Poland, but this is the first time its English-language official page has surfaced. As such, it could be another indicator of an impending U.S. launch, since the tablet received FCC certification a few weeks ago.

Google Search just made art education much more interactive

Google Search is an amazingly spectacular thing. Google Arts and Culture is also amazingly spectacular. Wouldn't it be great if they worked together in a fun and educational way? Now, they do.

Announced on Google's own blog, "The Keyword", searching and learning about art has just become a lot more interactive through the tech giant. While you could already search about specific pieces and get a pretty good understanding of them, the Google Search team has teamed up with Google Arts and Culture to make the experience even better.

Now, when you search for an artist, you can get an overview of their life, see a panel of high resolution photos of their works, and even see where their art is currently on display. If you can't travel there yourself, you can always jump into Google street view and do a virtual museum tour to experience the pieces up close and personal. While you're walking through, quick information about each piece will pop out, and you can click on the art you're interested to take a closer look.

To do this, Google scanned over 15,000 unique pieces all over the world at participating museums, and used machine learning to index them, similar to how Google photos lets you search for people, places, or things. The whole process was nearly automated, and that's pretty darn cool.

If you want to try it out, just search for your favorite artist and check out some pieces. There's bound to be a plethora of works for you to zoom in and explore, and you might even learn something new about them while you're at it.

Samsung Gear Fit 2 update brings automatic activity recognition and an SOS feature

Samsung has released a big update for the Gear Fit 2, which improves the device's heart-rate and exercise-tracking abilities and offers new ways to maximize your training.

When you finish a workout, you'll now see a color-coded graph that shows you the time spent in different heart rate zones. These are broken down by level of exertion to Moderate, Vigorous, and Maximum.

The update also enhances the device's activity detection, as the Gear Fit 2 will automatically activate its fitness-tracking functions after you exercise for more than ten minutes. And when you complete an auto-tracked workout, you'll see your approximate location on the map that pops up on the screen.

If you're a serious runner, you can set customizable pace targets via the Samsung Health app. It's a useful feature to have and only requires you to input the desired distance and time into your device. You can also choose between runs that are designed to either help you burn fat or increase your endurance.

Thanks to the new update, you have the option of customizing the info you see on the display during workouts. There's a lot of different data available including the total distance, calories burned, and the duration of an exercise, just to name a few. The last feature worth mentioning is the ability to send an SOS alert with your location just by pressing the home button of the device three times.

The update is already available for all users via the Samsung Gear app.

Galaxy S8 owners may have to wait until late June for full Bixby voice support

The launch of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus in late April occurred without the full English voice support for its much hyped Bixby digital assistant. Now a new report claims that Bixby won't add those critical voice command features until at least late June.

Bixby vs Google Assistant vs Siri

April 24, 2017

The report comes from the usually reliable Wall Street Journal, citing unnamed sources. You may remember that originally Samsung said that Bixby would get its voice command features "later this Spring", so a delay to late June would show the company is having some additional issues adding voice support to its home-grown assistant. WSJ adds that, according to one source, Bixby is still "struggling to comprehend English syntax and grammar".

The reported delay of Bixby's voice command features is perhaps the biggest black eye for the launch of the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus. However, it does not appear to have affected sales of the smartphones. Earlier in May, the company announced that it had already sold five million Galaxy S8 units, with 10 million units shipped to retailers.

While Samsung must be annoyed that its Bixby digital assistant is not yet ready for prime time, you have to think they prefer dealing with this issue compared with the problems of exploding phone batteries, which is what happened to its last flagship device, the Galaxy Note 7.

If you are a Galaxy S8 owner, are you disappointed that Bixby still can't hear your voice? Let us know your feelings on this matter in the comments!

Can the OnePlus 5 be a hit with a higher price?

The company is currently running a poll on China's popular social media service that lets users vote for one of eight possible retail box designs for the OnePlus 5. As you can see from the eight candidates, OnePlus seems to really likes the colors of white and red for its phone boxes.

Each of these designs are actually quite striking in their own way, and we wouldn't complain if the final choice came from one of these selections. However, beauty is always in the eye of the beholder, so you may feel differently. If you have a Weibo account, you can vote for your favorite box design at the link below.

We should learn which design will be picked as the final retail box for the OnePlus 5 around the time of its launch, which is expected to happen sometime later this June. In the meantime, we want to hear from you on this matter. Which box is your favorite?

Sony Xperia XZ Premium first impressions

The Sony Xperia XZ Premium was announced back in February during MWC 2017, but the phone is just now going up for pre-order in various markets around the world, like in the US on June 12. We will have a full review shortly, but while in Taipei for Computex 2017, I was lucky enough to be able to spend some time with Sony's latest flagship. Here are my first impressions about the Sony Xperia XZ Premium!

Starting off with the design, the Xperia XZ Premium does feel a touch too big, despite featuring a 5.5-inch display. The display doesn't feel too large given what other OEMs are doing with smartphone designs nowadays, though the top, bottom, and side bezels around the display make the phone feel chunkier than it needs to be. It certainly appears as though Sony doesn't really know how to make their devices compact. Plus, with the current focus on bezel-less designs, this could be a letdown for some.

The unit I'm using features a blue hue that shines through the metal and glass construction, and the finish is also very glossy. While that allows for a nice mirror-like effect, it also makes it a huge fingerprint magnet. It will take some work to keep the phone in a pristine state. It is definitely a great looking phone though, even if handling takes a bit of a hit because of its size.

Part of why it's a great looking phone is because of the 5.5-inch display, which comes with an incredible 4K resolution and HDR capabilities. I'll dive into the display capabilities more in the full review. However, one thing I can say now is that the resolution makes everything look incredibly sharp.

One thing I did notice was that the display settings includes a few options to change the coloration of the screen. These include a Super Vivid mode that really bumps up the saturation, and there is also an sRGB mode if you're looking for more accurate color reproduction.

The 19 MP rear shooter is definitely one of the marquee features of this phone. Not only is it capable of recording slow motion video at 960 fps (which I'm really excited to try out), but the quality of the pictures and videos the phone is able to capture are incredible as well. I've been using the camera a lot of vlogging and to take a lot of pictures around Taipei.

Recording video is something I've been particularly happy with so far. Color reproduction looks great, there's a lot of detail in each video, and the Steady Shot set to Intelligent Active mode does a good job of making sure that my jitters aren't showing up on the screen. And if there is one thing I'm always going to love about Sony Xperia smartphones, it is the availability of the physical camera shutter button on the side.

If there is one negative about the camera experience so far, it has to do with the camera interface. Navigating around the camera app is a bit cumbersome at the moment, mainly because the features you'd normally want to quickly access are hidden in different mode selection menus. For example, to record a video, you have to slide over to enter video mode, or open the mode selection screen just to get to 4K video. These are a few too many steps in my opinion.

The rest of the specifications of the Xperia XZ Premium include the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of built-in storage that is further expandable via microSD card, and Android 7.1 Nougat out of the box. The phone comes with a 3,230 mAh battery that is backed by Quick Charge 3.0 and an adaptive charging layer on top of that so you should be able to get back to a full charge very quickly. Finally, the device also features an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance.

The software experience on the Xperia XZ Premium is extremely smooth and snappy. I have yet to see any type of lag or stutter when navigating through various applications, or when using the camera.

I think the design of the Xperia XZ Premium shows that Sony is set in its ways when it comes to designing smartphones. But while the design may seem a bit dated at this point, the impressive specifications make this phone a solid competitor in the current flagship space.

A 4K screen means that you could be getting one of the best smartphone display experiences around, especially with everything that Sony packs into their Triluminos display. There is also the excellent camera with the 960 fps slow motion recording capabilities, various Intelligent modes, and a dedicated camera shutter button that will make for a great shutterbug companion.

Stay tuned with Android Authority for the comprehensive review of the Sony Xperia XZ Premium!
