Motorola’s newest Style Shell Moto Mods are made out of Gorilla Glass 5

Motorola

I am a fan of Motorola's Moto Mod ecosystem, but even I feel a bit trepidatious about the Lenovo subsidiary's latest Style Shell Moto Mods.

That is because they are made out of Gorilla Glass 5, which Motorola says makes the new Style Shells "damage resistant." No matter what Motorola says, they are still made of glass, so they are still susceptible to cracks when dropped.

Even so, I cannot deny how great they look. Motorola cooked up five new designs, and all of them look great. I would not hesitate to rock any of them on my Moto Z2 Force, but others might and will say different.

Then again, the switch to glass makes these new Style Shells almost twice as heavy as regular Style Shells. At $30 each, they are also more expensive than their wooden and nylon counterparts.

At the end of the day, the new Style Shells are why I enjoy the Moto Mod ecosystem. As cool as it is to slap a printer, projector, or 360-degree camera to the back of your Moto Z, it is also nice to have simpler options available.

Editor's Pick

Things can get expensive very fast with the ecosystem, which is a valid complaint. However, if you are someone who likes to keep things simple, these new Style Shells seem like they are worth your time.

As previously mentioned, you have five new designs to pick from: Retro Stripe, Overlapping Triangles, Graphic Flowers, Expressive Curves, and Colored Leaves. You can pick any of them up at the link below.

Google can now tell you if your flight will be delayed, even before the airlines

Google

  • Google is updating its Flights service with predictions on flight delays.
  • The predictions, along with reasons for flight delays, come from Google's machine learning algorithms.
  • The Flights feature can also show what's included in some "Basic Economy" flight prices.

If you travel regularly, you're probably aware that flights can get delayed for any number of reasons. Google wants to help make getting information on flight delays a little easier with an update to its Flights search feature.

Editor's Pick

According to Google's blog post, the Flights feature can not only show if a specific flight you are searching for is officially delayed, but it can now also predict if a flight might not arrive or depart on time. This is due to Google's own machine learning algorithms that might actually predict delays before the airlines themselves issue an official announcement. In addition to flight time predictions, the new feature will also share possible reasons for delays, such as weather. Google says its prediction engine will only mark a flight as being delayed if it is at least 80 percent confident that the prediction is accurate.

Another update to Google Flights will help with travelers who are flying with "Basic Economy" tickets. Sure, those prices might be cheaper than business class or first class, but what if you have to pay extra for things like baggage fees or a way to change your seat? The new feature will now show what is and isn't included in Basic Economy tickets from American, Delta, and United Airlines flights. Hopefully this feature will expand to include other airlines in the future.

Snap announced Bitmoji Deluxe, brings 100,000 combinations

  • Snapchat's Bitmoji Deluxe brings more skin tones, hair colors, and hair treatment options.
  • Simply go to Settings in the Bitmoji app and then choose "Change Avatar Style."
  • The update is the company's latest attempt at retaining current users and addressing disappointing user growth.

The newly launched Bitmoji Deluxe brings 40 skin tones, 50 hair colors, and 50 hair options, giving you a total of 100,000 combination possibilities.

As TechCrunch points out, the latest update to Bitmoji brings you a substantial amount of new choices for skin tones, hair colors, and hair treatment options. The total number of options for skin tones is now 40 and for hair colors, it's 50. Indeed, simple math indicates that there are 100,000 possible combinations available now.

Snap acquired Bitstrips, the company behind Bitmoji, in early 2016 for $64.2 million and has since incorporated it into its image-messaging app, Snapchat. While the Friendmoji feature has been well-received generally, Snapchat has been facing stiff competition from Facebook and Instagram. The company failed to meet financial expectations and reported disappointing quarter-over-quarter user growth in Q3 2017. Meanwhile, Instagram continues to attract new users, and its Stories feature, a direct clone of Snapchat's Stories feature, now has more daily users than the original.

The new Bitmoji Deluxe update is clearly Snap's attempt to retain its users and boost its disappointing user growth. Snap's CEO Evan Spiegel faced heavy criticism not too long ago when a former employee alleged that Spiegel had said Snapchat was only for rich people and it was not intended for poor countries like India and Spain. By bringing more options to reflect the diversity around us, Snap is undoubtedly trying to appeal to smartphone owners outside its usual "affluent Caucasian" user base.

Whether the strategy will pay off remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: it's only a matter of time until Facebook will come up with something similar, incorporate it into Facebook, Instagram, and Whatsapp, and have it work even better than the original.

To update your Bitmoji, simply go to Settings in the Bitmoji app, and then choose "Change Avatar Style" to get started.

Deal: HTC U11 is available for $100 off from Feb 1 to Feb 15

  • HTC U11 will be discounted to $549 starting February 1 through February 15.
  • If you buy the U11 or U11 Life, you can also get the Under Armour HealthBox for $99 instead of $399.

Just in time for Valentine's Day, HTC is offering a $100 discount on its flagship device, and if you buy one, the Under Armour HealthBox can be yours for just $99.

Editor's Pick

It's no secret that HTC loves running special promotions – whether it's Christmas, Black Friday, or the beginning of summer, it seems like the Taiwanese electronics manufacturer is always looking for an opportunity to offer discounts for its phones. No one is complaining, of course. Well, Valentine's Day is just around the corner, and what better time to offer special tech deals than on this "corporate holiday"?

Starting February 1 through February 15, the HTC U11 will be available for $100 off, bringing the total price down to $549. Although it doesn't come with the fancy 18:9 aspect ratio that its bigger sibling boasts, the U11 is still a flagship device by all means: a 5.5-inch Quad HD display, Snapdragon 835, 6 GB of RAM, an impressive 12-megapixel Dual Pixel camera, and a beefy 3,000 mAh battery. Sure, $549 isn't cheap per se, especially when phones like the OnePlus 5T cost around the same, but when you compare it to other 2017 flagships, sub-$900 suddenly sounds like a bargain.

If you're a health nut, you'll be glad to hear that HTC is also offering a special discount on the Under Armour HealthBox this Valentine's Day – that is, when you buy the HTC U11 or the more affordable U11 Life. The Under Armour HealthBox includes a fitness tracker, smart scale, and chest-mounted heartrate monitor and usually costs a whopping $399. With the discount, you only pay $99.

The sales begin the moment February 1 begins EST and ends at 11:59 PST on February 15 right on HTC's official website.

LG settles lawsuit over smartphone bootlooping, members get $425 cash or $700 rebate

  • LG recently settled a lawsuit launched by smartphone who were plagued by bootlooping issues.
  • Those affected who joined the lawsuit must file a "Proof of Claim" survey by February 12 to get the full rebate or cash amount.
  • As of this writing, the survey and the settlement page has been taken down.

Do you remember the lawsuit that angry LG smartphone owners filed against the South Korean company? The lawsuit was settled today and you could potentially have some money headed your way.

If you are not familiar with the term "bootlooping," it is when a phone is stuck in a loop of reboots that prevent owners from actually using their devices. The issue is not exclusive to LG smartphones, though it affected the likes of the G4, V10, V20, Nexus 5X, and G5.

Because such a side swath of smartphones were plagued by bootlooping, owners filed a class-action lawsuit against LG. Law firm Girard Gibbs has just reached a settlement with the company—one that hopes to net members some financial restitution.

According to Girard Gibbs, which handled the lawsuit on behalf of the members, the first option is a $700 rebate toward the purchase of a new LG smartphone. That is almost the cost of a new V30, which has seemingly remained immune to bootlooping.

The second option is $425 in cash, which will likely be the more popular option. People can get the rebate, pick up the V30, and try to sell it, which will likely net them more money. However, that seems like a hassle, particularly when these folks can get $425 and not do a thing.

Editor's Pick

Those affected who joined the lawsuit must fill out a "Proof of Claim" survey by February 12, 2018. They can still fill out the survey if the deadline passes, though they will only get either $100 in cash or up to a $200 rebate.

At the time of this writing, however, the survey and the link to the settlement page on Girard Gibbs' website have been taken down. It could be due to the volume of people that tried to access these pages at once, though we will update this story when we learn more.

If you managed to submit your survey, expect payment distribution to begin sometime in March.

  • The update adds a way for users to watch Nest Cam footage on their TV with Google Assistant voice commands.
  • It also has the latest Android security updates, firmware improvements, and new app support.

NVIDIA closes out the month of January by rolling out the 6.3 Experience Update for its Android TV-based Shield TV set-top box. This is a rather major update as it adds some new app support, along with the usual security patches and firmware improvements.

NVIDIA's support page for the Shield TV shows that the 6.3 update adds support for viewing footage from Nest Cam cameras on your TV. If you own a Nest Cam in your home, you can now use the Shield TV's support for Google Assistant to simply say, "Show me the front door camera" to begin viewing the live footage from your Nest Cam location.

There's also new app support in this Shield TV update, adding in Cartoon Network, VH1, The Magic of LEGO, Tidal, and SiriusXM. VLC users can now watch picture-in-picture and 360-degree videos, too. It also updates the Plex DVR app so it can automatically remove commercials when recording over-the-air TV shows. Finally, Shield TV adds support for controlling over 1,000 smart home devices with Google Assistant. US Cellular lowers its prepaid unlimited plan to $55 a month, down from $70

US Cellular best prepaid plans in the US

  • U.S. Cellular has lowered the price of its prepaid unlimited plan from $70 to $55 a month.
  • However, speeds go down to 2G levels if you exceed 15 GB before the end of your month's billing cycle.
  • There's also a new 3 GB high-speed prepaid data plan for $40 per month.

There's some good news for people looking for a bargain on unlimited prepaid phone plans. U.S. Cellular, the nation's fifth-largest wireless provider, has revealed it has lowered the price of its prepaid unlimited plan from $70 a month to just $55 a month.

Editor's Pick

The company's press release does have some fine print to this price cut, however. Unlimited users will have a speed cap of 1.5 Mbps, and customers who pay for this plan and exceed 15 GB a month on their data before the end of the month will see their download speeds will go way down to the 2G level. All prepaid customers can also add unlimited talk and text to Mexico and Canada for $5 each per month.

U.S. Cellular has also introduced a new 3 GB high-speed prepaid data plan for $40 per month, and some retailers are offering a 1 GB high-speed prepaid plan from the carrier for $35 a month. The company adds that any prepaid customer who signs up for plans that's $40 a month or higher can get a "free" phone like a Samsung Galaxy J3 (2017) or Moto E4 Plus in the form of a $75 U.S. Cellular promotional card.

Square Enix’s Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia released for Android

Update (01/31/18): As promised, the Android version of Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia is now available for Android. The latest free-to-play RPG based on Square Enix's Final Fantasy series can be downloaded now from the Google Play Store at the link below.

Original story (01/18/18): We have yet to hear a peep from Square Enix regarding Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition's missed release window. Even so, the company announced that Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia, the mobile offshoot of the upcoming Dissidia Final Fantasy NT, is available for pre-registration on the Play Store.

While other Dissidia Final Fantasy titles have been fighting games, Opera Omnia is a free-to-play RPG with turn-based combat, which makes the mobile title a spin-off of a spin-off. Combat does not appear to be overly complicated; you dish out damage to your opponents and unleash powerful attacks once you build up enough Bravery.

The simple combat is important for the social component of Opera Omnia, which also lets you team up with others to take down more powerful opponents. You can go solo, if you so choose, but the option is there.

What is really notable about Opera Omnia, however, are the visuals. Not only does the game look sharp, but everyone from Vivi and Tifa to the ever-brooding Cloud look downright adorable. Your mileage will vary, but I feel as if Square Enix strikes a good balance between straight-up chibi and somewhat realistic.

You can check out the trailer above to see the game in action and pre-register at the link below if you like what you see. Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia will be available sometime this winter.

Huawei P20 likely to be revealed in Paris on March 27

  • Press invites have been sent by Huawei for an upcoming event in Paris on March 27.
  • The event is likely to officially reveal the long-awaited Huawei P20 flagship smartphone.
  • There may be as many as three P20 phone models shown in Paris on that date.

We have been waiting patiently for Huawei to give us a clue about when they plan to reveal the long awaited P20 flagship smartphone. Today, invites from Huawei to a number of media outlets have arrived, announcing the company will indeed show off "new flagship devices" at a press event in Paris on March 27.

Editor's Pick

Huawei didn't mention a specific brand name for the phone that would be revealed at the Paris event, though it's almost certain to be the P20—the successor to 2017's Huawei P10 family.

The date is also about a month after the 2018 Mobile World Congress trade show. Huawei first showed off the P10 family at the 2017 MWC event but it looks like the company wants to delay the launch of the P20 models by a few weeks, perhaps because Huawei doesn't want to compete with the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S9 lineup.

Unconfirmed rumors about the P20 include larger displays for the main phone and the P20 Plus, along with a third P20 Lite model. Both the P20 and P20 Plus are expected to have Huawei's latest in-house Kirin 970 chipset inside. A recent rumor claims that the high-end phones could have Leica's camera sensors, including a triple lens 40 MP rear camera setup with 5x hybrid zoom, along with a huge 24 MP front-facing camera.

We will be in Paris on March 27 to get first-hand coverage of the Huawei press event. In the meantime, are you excited about the launch of the P20 family?

Move over, Intel: Samsung is now the world’s largest chipmaker

  • For the first time in 25 years, Intel is no longer the world's top chipmaker by revenue.
  • Samsung knocked Intel off its perch by posting $67 billion in revenue for 2017.
  • The switch underlines the growth of mobile chips and Samsung's increasing presence in the computing space.

Intel might have dominated the chipset market for a quarter of a century, but Samsung has officially taken over the top spot for the first time in company history, reports TechCrunch.

According to the South Korean outfit, its chipset division made $67 billion in revenue for 2017. By comparison, Intel reported $62.8 billion in total revenue for the year, a six percent increase from 2016. In other words, 2017 might have been a record year for Intel, but it was not enough to hold back Samsung from becoming number one.

To be clear, this is not a one-for-one comparison. Keep in mind that Intel primarily focuses on x86 processors for computers, while Samsung flexes its muscles in memory and flash storage production. Even so, it is clear that Samsung's focus on mobile has paid dividends. Intel processors might be found in 90 percent of the world's computers, but the company attempted and failed to enter the mobile space.

This compares to Samsung, which saw high demand for high-performance products like DRAM memory and NAND flash. The company also saw high demand for chipsets designed for "automotive electronics and AI."

As such, the company likely sees its component business as a cornerstone of the future of technology.

Editor's Pick

Samsung is among the top TV, home appliance, smartphone display, and smartphone vendors in the world. However, the biggest contributing factor to its fourth quarter earnings was "driven by the components business, with the largest contribution coming from the Memory business that manufactures DRAM and NAND."

Somewhat concerning is the predicted weakening in the price of DRAM and NAND. Samsung achieved such high revenues because a supply shortage increased their prices. As stock stabilizes, those prices are expected to come down, which could lead to lower numbers for Samsung's component business.

Even so, the company appears well-positioned for the near-future and could have an even more successful 2018.

The Sharp Android One S3 embodies stock Android goodness in a tough shell

Sharp Corp., Japan has announced the company's next Android One phone, the Sharp Android One S3. As the name suggests, it is Sharp's low-cost Android One offering and will be available in Japan via Y! Mobile in four colors. The phone comes with Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box and sports a fairly modest spec sheet. The Android One S3 is a successor to the Sharp X1, which was part of the Android One program in 2017.

The Android One S3 is powered a Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 SoC with 3 GB RAM and 32 GB of storage that can be expanded via microSD card. The phone features a 5-inch 1080p IGZO display, which has not yet embraced the (near) bezel-less philosophy. However, the company is touting vivid images thanks to the S-Pure LED backlight. A 13 MP rear camera and a 5 MP front-facing camera help with the imaging. Rounding off the specs is a 2,700 mAh battery that should last for a typical workday considering the low-end SoC and the bloat-free OS.

Sharp

The S3 is restricted to the Japanese market for a price of JPY 32,400 (US$300). Apparently, there's no fingerprint reader (an oddity in this age) but the phone is MIL-SPEC rated for drops and is dust and water resistant. That should explain why the price is a bit higher for the specifications on offer.

Google's Android One program used to have lackluster offerings at best but thanks to devices such as the Xiaomi Mi A1 and the HTC U11 Life, we are seeing some good phones with stock Android at competitive price points. Sharp was one of the initial partners of the Android One program in Japan, with the Sharp 507SH being the country's first Android One device. The Japanese OEM followed it up with the Sharp X1 in 2017 and now we have the Android One S3. This is not the supposed Aquos S3, however. We should hear about that model in the weeks running up to MWC 2018.
