Huawei Mate 10 Pro reportedly receiving Android Pie in Europe

The front of the Huawei Mate 10 Pro.

  • Huawei is reportedly rolling out the Android Pie-based EMUI 9.0 update to the Mate 10 Pro.
  • The new Huawei update is apparently restricted to European users for now.
  • Prominent EMUI additions include a fingerprint-enabled password manager and GPU Turbo 2.0.

Huawei isn't the fastest when it comes to system updates, but it looks like the company is stepping up with Android Pie. According to GetDroidTips, the Chinese colossus has pushed out a Pie-based update to the Mate 10 Pro.

The update is bundled with the EMUI 9.0 Android skin and has the build number 9.0.0.108, the website claims. The OTA is reportedly being pushed out to Mate 10 Pro users in Europe, but will "soon" spread to other markets.

EMUI 9.0 packs plenty of features, such as the Google Lens-inspired HiVision feature, GPU Turbo 2.0 for better performance in selected games, and a biometric-enabled password manager (seen below). The Chinese brand is also touting faster app launch speeds and smoother system performance with the new skin.

Huawei password vault details from a slide.

Android Pie should also bring a few new features to the Mate 10 Pro, such as digital wellbeing, wind down functionality, Google's take on gesture navigation, and adaptive brightness. It's unclear whether Huawei will adopt Pie's adaptive battery feature, as EMUI already has its own power-saving features.

Editor's Pick

News of a European roll-out means other regions can't be far behind, so sit tight if you've got a Mate 10 Pro in the U.S. or elsewhere. Hopefully the P20 series and budget Huawei phones aren't far behind in receiving a Pie-based update, either.

We've contacted Huawei for confirmation of the OTA and will update the article when/if we get a response. Have you received the update though? Then let us know in the comments!

Happy birthday, dear Google and Android! Happy birthday to you! That's right, this week sees two big birthdays: Google turns 20 and Android turns 10. 15 best puzzle games for Android

This is the featured image for the best puzzle games for android
Puzzle games used to be a simple genre with a simple idea. You solve puzzles for time killing enjoyment. However, the genre ballooned in a big way on mobile. In fact, it's one of the most popular genres on the entire platform. It started with simple viral games like 2048 and evolved into genuinely enjoyable experiences like Monument Valley and Telltale Games titles (until they went under). These days, you can find some seriously good puzzle games on Android. Gone are the days of super simple mechanics and graphics with goofy ideas. Some of these games are actually fairly intense and complex with stories and even really good graphics. This list changes almost entirely every year and 2018 was no different. Here are the best puzzle games for Android.

All That Remains: Part 1

Price: $2.49
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
All That Remains: Part 1 is an escape puzzle game. Players wake up in a bunker and have to find their way out before something bad happens. Each room in the bunker has a bunch of puzzles. You also communicate with the character's sister over a two-way radio. It's definitely the best escape room game by this developer. They do also have other escape style puzzle games as well if you want to try those as well. In any case, All That Remains: Part 1 goes for $2.49 with no in-app purchases or ads.

They each have fun little stories as well. All three games go for $4.99 up front. However, there are no in-app purchases after you purchase the game.

The second is Friday the 13th. It has a lot of the same ideas, but over 100 levels of gory goodness. These games are not for children or adults with weak stomachs. They otherwise make for outstanding horror-puzzle games. Slayaway Camp goes for $2.99. Friday the 13th is a free download with in-app purchases, but it's not a freemium game.

Faraway 3: Arctic Escape is another newer puzzle game from 2018. It features a variety of puzzles similar to console games like The Witness. You have various boards and each board needs solved. The game has 18 stages with a variety of puzzles in each one along with a story line. This is also the third game in the series and the previous two are pretty good as well. The three together should provide a decent amount of entertainment. The third one has nine free levels and the rest cost $3.99. The previous games are also fairly inexpensive.

Hello Neighbor

Price: Free / $14.99
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Hello Neighbor is one of the most unique puzzle games on mobile. Your neighbor is doing some weird stuff and you want to check it out. Thus, you break into the house over and over again. The neighbor sets up defenses after each break-in based on your entry and exist strategies. You have to adjust your strategies accordingly. This was a very popular game on PC and the mobile game plays about the same. This one is rather expensive. The criticism is a little more harsh due to its price tag. However, it's still a good game with a unique premise.

Life is Strange

Price: Free / Up to $8.99
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Life is Strange is an outstanding adventure-puzzle-drama game. It follows the life of a Max, a high school girl with special powers. She can rewind and replay various moments in her life. You rewind and redo various moments until you get the desired results. This is a port of a console game and a pretty good one, too. The graphics and mechanics are good and the story is entertaining. There is a prequel for this game available as well, but it might need an update or two before we would fully recommend it. This may not be a puzzle game in the classic sense, but the main mechanic is a puzzle element so we're counting it.

Monument Valley 1 and 2

Price: $3.99 (+$1.99) / $4.99
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Monument Valley 1 and 2 are some of the most popular puzzle games on mobile. They use MC Escher-inspired puzzle mechanics. You twist and turn portions of the level in order to progress. The games aren't difficult. They boast a more relaxing experience rather than challenging. The Monument Valley games do look fantastic, though. The art style is definitely to be applauded. The first game includes a handful of levels along with the Forgotten Shores DLC ($1.99 extra). The second game is a bit longer but not by much. These are classics.

Part Time UFO

Price: $3.99

Part Time UFO is a goofy puzzle game from the developers of Kirby. Yes, the adorable pink puff ball that eats stuff. You fly around in a UFO while doing odd jobs for the village townspeople. Each job is a puzzle. The game has a variety of colorful characters, plenty of levels and puzzles, and even some stuff to unlock. It also has Google Play Games support for achievements. The game goes for $3.99 with no in-app purchases or advertisements. It's not the most graphically intense game out there, but we like it anyway.

Playdius Entertainment puzzle games

Price: $2.99-$4.99 each

Playdius Entertainment is another publisher on Google Play. Its puzzle games are some of the most unique. Included in their collection are A Normal Lost Phone, Another Lost Phone: Laura's Story, and Bury me, my Love. The first two are mystery puzzle games. You have someone's phone. Your goal is to search through it to find out who they are, where they went, and what happened to them. Bury me, my Love is a text game about a refugee. You explore the alien ship, solve various puzzles, and find out what happened to everybody. The game also features a heavy story line, cut scenes, and fairly excellent graphics. The developers say this is the first game in the series. We're excited to see the next installments if they ever make it to mobile. This one costs $4.99 with no additional microtransactions or advertising.

The Room series

Price: $0.99 / $1.99 / $3.99 / $4.99
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
The Room franchise is one of the oldest and most successful puzzle game franchises on mobile. There are four games in the series at the time of this writing. The first two are classic puzzle games. You figure out puzzles to progress until you finish the game. The third game in the series introduced multiple endings and a slightly heavier narrative. Finally, the most recent game, Old Sins, takes place in a dollhouse. All four games have some similar elements, including outstanding graphics, escape room elements, and clever puzzle designs. They are also usually fairly short games. However, the inclusion of multiple endings gives the later titles some replay value. These are classics in the puzzle game space on mobile and we recommend them highly. The first game in the series is $0.99 and the most recent is $4.99. The other two fall between those two price tags. None of them have in-app purchases or ads.

Rusty Lake games

Price: Free / Varies
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Rusty Lake is one of the most popular puzzle game developers on Google Play. There are two different franchises by Rusty Lake. The Cube Escape series is a long-running series of puzzle games with escape room and hidden object puzzle elements. Most of those games are free except the most recent one, Cube Escape: Paradox (it costs $1.99 for the full version). The other series, Rusty Lake, is a more premium point-and-click adventure-puzzle game that takes place in the same universe as the Cube Escape series. These usually cost money, but never more than a few bucks. There are usually one or two new additions to each franchise every year and they're all pretty good.

5 best SEGA Genesis emulators, SEGA Mega Drive emulators, and SEGA CD emulators for Android

best sega genesis emulators for android
One of gaming's first big rivalries was between the SEGA Genesis and the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). We know that Nintendo ultimately won the rivalry, but plenty of people still enjoyed the Genesis and there were plenty of great games for the system. If you're aching for some nostalgia and the Genesis is your flavor of choice, we think you'll enjoy the best SEGA Genesis emulators for Android! Please note that most of these should work with Mega Drive games and a few even work with SEGA CD, SEGA Mark III, and the SEGA Master System. SEGA is also bringing old classics directly to Android with no SEGA emulator needed. Some titles already out include Crazy Taxi, Sonic the Hedgehog, Virtua Tennis, Phantasy Star II, Beyond Oasis, and several others. You can find a list of available SEGA Forever games here!

ClassicBoy

Price: Free / $3.99

ClassicBoy bills itself as an all-in-one type of emulator. It has support for PlayStation, Nintendo 64, NES, three different Game Boy, and SEGA Genesis. The emulator seem to work well. Additionally, most of the user reviews are generally positive. The features include local multiplayer support, customizable gamepad layouts, and the usual stuff like save and load states. It's a great option for people who are looking for more than just SEGA Genesis emulators. You can also try it before you buy it to make sure that it works.

MasterEmu is one of the newer emulators on Google Play. This is a Sega emulator with Master Drive and Game Gear support. There are actually some decent features with this one. That includes Android TV support, hardware controller support, excellent game support, and more. This is an early emulator from a new developer. Thus, there are some bugs here and there. However, with some time, this has the potential to grow into one of the best Sega emulators. There is a free and pro version. The pro version is reasonably priced. We don't have a lot of complaints about this one.

MD.emu

MD.emu is probably the best solution for SEGA Genesis emulators. It's an open source project that most other SEGA Genesis emulators are based off of. This one works with SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive games as well as SEGA CD and Mark III games. This makes it the most versatile emulator of the group. It also has the longest list of additional features, including hardware controller support, support for cheat codes, auto-saving, and support for various controller setups. It's the one we'd recommend that you start with because it seems to be the most complete.

It has configurable controls and the usual array of emulator features such as save and load states, cheat codes, and more. The compatibility is really good and this is a great option if you want to explore more than one emulator at a time. It's also open source and complete free. The only downside is the learning curve. It will take you a minute to figure out how to make this one work.

SEGA Forever games

Here's the funny thing. SEGA has launched a number of their old games on Google Play. That includes games like Sonic the Hedgehog, Gunstar Heroes, Altered Beast, Streets of Rage, VectorMan, and dozens of others. These are official games by SEGA from the SEGA Genesis on Google Play. They feature decent mechanics, reasonable prices, and it's official. It's a good way to support the retro gaming community and encourage SEGA to keep up the good work. It's worth checking Google Play for your favorite SEGA games because you may not need an emulator for them anymore. However, we do miss stuff like fast forward support and save states on these official releases, though.
