No Oreo update for BlackBerry KeyOne on Sprint, other CDMA carriers TBC

  • The BlackBerry KeyOne won't be upgraded to Android Oreo, according to a Sprint Community Manager.
  • The KeyOne would become one of the rare Android smartphones to never receive a major update.
  • Whether this is specific to Sprint, or all CDMA carriers, we are still trying to discern.

Sprint has confirmed the BlackBerry KeyOne will not receive Android Oreo. Though the update is already rolling out in some parts of North America, a Sprint community manager said earlier this month that it had been officially ruled out for that carrier.

This will be a disappointing result for KeyOne owners on Sprint, as the device would permanently remain on Android Nougat, the software it launched with in 2017 (the Oreo update's absence almost certainly rules out the more recent Android Pie update, too).

Many flagship Android phones see two major updates in their lifetime, which Google brings out at a rate of one per year, while less prominent phones sometimes only see one update. It's rare that a manufacturer fails to supply a single OS upgrade, though.

As CrackBerry points out, GSM variants of the handset have already been receiving the update, so there's a chance that this is related to CDMA versions of the device. If it is, that means Sprint may not be the only carrier to miss out on the KeyOne's Oreo update. KeyOne owners on Verizon, brace yourselves…

We've reached out to Sprint and BlackBerry regarding the matter and will update this article should we receive a response.
