T-Mobile set to show off its next Uncarrier moves on September 6

From killing off contracts and bringing back unlimited data plans to a rewards program, T-Mobile's Uncarrier events tend to include some sort of significant progression for the magenta-colored carrier. That trend looks to continue with T-Mobile's upcoming Uncarrier Next event, which the magenta-colored carrier with a predictably-vague teaser video.

The video did not say much of anything about what the event might entail, but rumors peg a program that will reduce the prices of flagship smartphones like the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and LG V30, among others. It will reportedly replace T-Mobile's JUMP! program and target those who pay for a smartphone outright.

There are also rumors that T-Mobile will launch a self-branded flagship smartphone, which itself is rumored to be part of the carrier's Revvl series. T-Mobile already announced the Revvl, which mainly sticks to the low-end, and our sources emphasized that two more powerful Revvl devices are in the works, so an unveiling at Uncarrier Next is not outside the realm of possibility.

Even if the Uncarrier Next event does not amount to much, T-Mobile has already had a busy 2017. The carrier succeeded in purchasing the 600 Mhz spectrum that should appreciably expand its US coverage, with the recently-announced V30 the first phone to support the new network.

Still, we will keep close tabs on Uncarrier Next and report back with all the bits. The event is slated to kick off on Wednesday, September 6 at 8:00am PST (11:00am EST).

Google encourages developers to make standalone Android Wear apps

One of Android Wear 2.0's marquee features is its support for standalone apps. This eliminates the need to constantly have your phone nearby to send data to your smartwatch apps, since they can now function like your typical smartphone app. As nice as standalone apps are, they remained exclusive to Android Wear 2.0 until today, when Google announced that standalone apps also work with Android Wear 1.0.

Diving into the policy change requires a bit of context, which is where multi-APKs come in. In short, they enable standalone watch apps and faces to exist because they separate an Android Wear app from its corresponding smartphone app. Not only do multi-APKs allow developers to create standalone watch apps, but also allow iOS users to experience Android Wear apps – keep in mind that Android Wear watches can connect to iPhones.

As such, the policy change that allows developers can now use multi-APKs for Android Wear 1.0 watches means that the feature is no longer exclusive to Android Wear 2.0. It also means that Google wants as many standalone Android Wear apps in as many places as possible, particularly when it comes to reaching iOS folks:

This is critical to providing apps not only to our Android users, but also iOS users – which is increasingly important as we continue to expand our diverse ecosystem of watches and users.

As for the actual policy, Google's push for developers to unbundle their Android Wear APKs from their mobile apps will start on January 18, 2018. This includes watch faces and complication data providers. Once developers do so, their apps will have the "Enhanced for Android Wear" badge on the Play Store.

The Walking Dead: March To War bring the zombie conflict to Android

There are already a number of mobile games based on popular The Walking Dead franchise that you can play right now on your phone. Today a new entry made its official worldwide debut for Android in the Google Play Store.

The Walking Dead: March to War is based mostly on the comic book version of the zombie-themed series, but it centers on the story arc that's currently unfolding in the AMC TV show adaptation.

The game is set in and around Washington DC, but also features the fictional locations of Sanctuary and the Hilltop. Developed by Disruptor Beam, this is a multiplayer-oriented top-down strategy game, where players not only have to defend themselves against Walkers, but also have to build up and supply their bases, and keep them intact from both zombie and human attacks.

You also have to train your group of survivors and you can even recruit the well-known characters from The Walking Dead comics, such as Rick Grimes and even Negan, with his trusty barbed wire bat Lucille, to join your team. The free-to-play game does include in-app purchases, so be aware of that before you download.

The flood of Walking Dead mobile games will continue later this year. The upcoming The Walking Dead: Our World title will be an AR game where you will shoot and cut zombies in real locations by seeing them on your smartphone.

But you're not here for the specs, you want to learn more about where to buy the LG V30. Look no further! In this post, we'll walk you through the LG V30 price, release date, and any carrier deals we can find.

The LG V30 release date is Thursday, September 21 in South Korea, followed by North America, Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Unfortunately LG hasn't given us release date details for any other region yet.

The LG V30 price has not been announced yet, though we likely won't have to wait much longer. Since the V30 release date is only three weeks away (at least in Korea), it shouldn't be long before carriers begin announcing pricing and availability details.

Rumor has it that the V30 will go for the starting price of 800,000 KRW in South Korea, the equivalent of around $699 for the version touting 64 GB of internal space.

Not every market will get the LG V30 Plus. In its announcement, LG noted that the V30 Plus with 128 GB of storage will be available in "limited markets", and the good news for US consumers is that Sprint has already confirmed that it would carry the V30 Plus stateside.

The 64 GB V30 comes in four color options: Aurora Black, Cloud Silver, Moroccan Blue, and Lavender Violet. There's no word yet as to which color options will be available with the V30 Plus.

B&O Play earphones will be packaged with the V30, but only in some markets. LG says these earphones feature digital filters that adjust the pre- and post-ringing of the impulse response of music with three different user-selectable features. There are also four presets that mix and match sound frequencies and decibel scales to help produce high-quality audio.

LG V30 carrier and retailer deals:

Unlocked: (stay tuned)

Verizon: (stay tuned)

AT&T: AT&T has announced plans to carry the LG V30 this fall, though no pricing or availability details were given.

T-Mobile: (stay tuned)

Sprint: Sprint has announced that it would carry the LG V30 Plus in the US, bringing the 128 GB version of LG's just-announced flagship to North America. Pricing and release date are not available yet, unfortunately.

US Cellular: (stay tuned)

Developing! – Stay tuned in the hours, days, and weeks to come as we'll expand this post with carrier specific and region-specific LG V30 pricing and release date information as it hits.

YouTube TV adds 12 more new US cities, brings total to 27

We were pretty happy with YouTube TV when we first checked it out, but one of the service's more glaring problems when it launched was availability, or lack thereof. As such, it comes as welcome news that Google has brought its cord-cutting service to 12 more markets in the US.

The new cities include Cleveland, Denver, Greensboro, Harrisburg, Hartford, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Milwaukee, Oklahoma City, Salt Lake City, San Diego, and St. Louis. They join the previous YouTube TV markets of  Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas-Fort Worth, Detroit, Houston, Miami-Fort Lauderdale, Minneapolis-Saint Paul, Orlando-Daytona Beach-Melbourne, Phoenix, Washington D.C., Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, and San Francisco.

As a quick refresher, YouTube TV lets you watch live and recorded content in any of the aforementioned cities. So long as you are signed in with your Google account, as well as able to pay at least $35 a month, you are good to go. It currently features 57 channels, though the availability of some will depend on your zip code.

When we first took a look at the service, we thought it was a great start for Google, albeit one that needed some ironing out in a few spots. One of those spots is where you can watch YouTube TV, though it seems that Google takes availability seriously. As such, make sure to check back from time to time as we will continually update this page whenever the service gets wider availability.

In order to use these new features, Gboard owners will also have to snag sticker packs from the Google Play Store, along with the Snapchat-owned Bitmoji app. Then, if you want to access these new images when you chat with family or friends, you just tap Gboard's emoji button, and then either the sticker button or the Bitmoji button. After that, you can search through the available stickers or Bitmoji and pick the one that you like the most.

Google has also signed up a number of major pop culture licenses for its sticker packs, including Star Wars, Disney, the NBA, Hello Kitty, Garfield, Power Rangers, and more. Of course, Google will add even more sticker packs for Gboard users in the coming weeks and months. You can search and add new packs from the Google Play Store, or you can simply tap on the "+" button when you're in the sticker tab of Gboard to find new packs directly from the app.

Will you be using stickers and Bitmoji in your Gboard chats? Let us know what you think about this new feature in the comments!

10 best Android TV apps

best Android TV apps
It's been a couple of years since Android TV has come out and it's been slowly maturing as a platform. It has more apps and games available for it than ever before. There could be more hardware available, but we're sure that's coming sooner or later. If you have an Android TV device and you're looking to get the best experience, then check out the best Android TV apps! Also, most Android TV apps have a Chromecast built-in. That means any app with Chromecast support can be used on most Android TV devices!

Amazon Prime Video

Price: Free app / $99.99 per year
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Amazon is fairly ornery when it comes to their streaming services. Amazon Prime Video on Android TV is a no brainer. The Android app doesn't support Chromecast (only Fire TV sticks). Thus, the Android TV app is the only way to get it on an Android-powered TV without some sort of hassle. The selection is decent. Paying the price of admission also unlocks other Prime benefits. The service also includes a variety of specialized channels with additional content. It's not bad for what it is. The main app could really use some Chromecast support, though.

Google Play Music

Price: Free / $9.99-$14.99 per month
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Google Play Music is another obvious choice for Android TV apps. It has a rock solid music streaming experience. In fact, it's probably better than the mobile phone version. You can also upload 50,000 of your own songs to the cloud and access them anywhere. That makes this service the easiest way to listen to your locally stored music on your TV. Uploading music and select radio stations are free. The $9.99 per month charge is for on-demand music play. The $14.99 per month charge is for the family plan. For now, Google Play Music subscriptions also include YouTube Red. That's a great one-two punch.

Hulu

Price: Free / $7.99-$39.99 per month
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Hulu is slowly growing into one of the better Android TV apps. It has a decent video streaming service. There are just a ton of shows to watch. Additionally, the service allows for live TV for $39.99 per month. It includes a bunch of channels, including local sports channels. Going for the live TV option also includes all of Hulu's in-house streaming content as well. That makes it an enticing option for cable cutters. You can also add HBO, Showtime, and Cinemax for additional fees.

Hulu

MX Player

Price: Free / $5.99
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
MX Player is one of the most solid video player apps on Android. It retains that title on Android TV as well. It can play pretty much any codec. The interface is simple to use. That makes it great for large, locally stored video collections. It's a bit buggy. However, Android's support for USB storage devices is also not great. Thus, it can be frustrating using an app like this one for stuff like playing videos off of flash drives. We recommend you try the free version before buying it, but we didn't have much trouble playing our videos.

MX Player

Netflix

Price: Free / $9.99-$11.99 per month
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Netflix is among the most obvious Android TV apps. It has a huge selection, is binge friendly, and it's still among the cheapest video streaming services out there. The Android TV version looks and feels a lot like the Xbox and PlayStation versions. Thus, veterans of those platforms know what to expect. It also supports 4K video and HDR. However, your TV has to support it. You also have to pay the top tier subscription price. Otherwise, it's rock solid.

Pandora Music

Price: Free / $4.99 per month / $9.99 per month
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Pandora is one of the best music apps on almost every platform. That includes Android TV apps. It's still among the best fire-and-forget-it music radio apps available. They also have a new on-demand service for $9.99 per month. That puts it on par with services like Spotify, Google Play Music, and Apple Music. You could do much worse than this one. That's especially true if you just need some music playing in the background for parties or get-togethers.

Pandora Music

Plex

Price: Free / $4.99 per month / $39.99 per year
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Plex was one of the first Android TV apps. It remains one of the best. Its main purpose is to play videos from your computer or phone to your TV. It also works with other types of files like music, photos, and more. The app also allows streaming from various cloud storage sites like Dropbox, Google Drive, and OneDrive. It has a variety of apps that add more stuff you can watch. However, you'll need the Plex Pass subscription or a one-time in-app purchase to get them. It's a bit expensive, but it Plex does good work.
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY

Spotify

Price: Free / $9.99 per month
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Spotify is another one of the obvious Android TV apps. It is a rock solid music streaming service. It also has podcasts and even some video content. Word around the grapevine says that they're experimenting with Hi-Fi music as well. That might sound really good coming out of your home theater set up if you have one. The prices have remained the same for ages. The selections are also far above average. We like Google Play better, but Spotify is just as good.
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Spotify

VLC

Price: Free
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
VLC is another one of the better Android TV apps for video playback. It supports pretty much every video codec. It also works for network streams, DVD ISOs, and even most types of audio files. It's probably the best all-around multi-media player for Android TV. Between this and MX Player, local video playback shouldn't be too difficult. The experience can be a little buggy. We're sure the bugs and small issues will be fixed over time. It's completely free and that makes it one of the must-have Android TV apps.
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
VLC

YouTube

Price: Free / $9.99 per month
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
YouTube is a bit of a cheap pick for Android TV apps. We admit that. The service has more video than 1,000 people can watch in a lifetime. That includes comedy, tech, music, and even politics if you really want to make yourself angry. You can get an ad-free experience with YouTube Red. The Android TV version of this app has its ups and downs. In some cases, it may even be easier to cast from the app on your phone. It works well enough, though.

Pokémon GO adds more Legendary Pokémon, EX Raid Battle feature coming soon

In July, the first Legendary Pokémon creatures started popping up in Pokémon GO, the hit AR game from developer Niantic Labs. Today, the team is rolling out an update that brings three more Legendary Pokémon to be caught. In addition, the game is currently testing a new feature called EX Raid Battle in a small number of Gyms.

The three new Legendary Pokémon, all from the Johto region, include Raikou, an Electric-type creature that can be found currently in the Americas, while Entei, a Fire-type Pokémon, can be found and battled in Europe and Africa. Finally, Suicune, a Water-type Legendary Pokémon, is currently located in the Asia-Pacific region. These three creatures will move to different parts of the world on September 30, and will move to their final region on October 31.

The EX Raid Battle feature, formerly known as Exclusive Raid Battle, will let trailers face off against a more powerful raid boss than normal. Invites will be sent out to selected players starting on September 6, and Niantic will be making changes and adjustments to the feature based on the feedback of those players, before it launches it worldwide.

Previous Updates

Legendary Pokémon make their debut

July 20: The first Legendary Pokémon started appearing in Gyms for trainers to hopefully defeat and catch, and they can then be used in Raid Bosses and Gym Battles.

Version 0.69.0 brings new trainer abilities, improves Pokémon info screen

July 19: Pokémon Go version 0.69.0 has rolled out, and it delivers a handful of new trainer abilities, as well as some interface changes and bug fixes. The new abilities come in three flavors: the first, and obviously most important, allows trainers to spin the Photo Disc at a Gym after completing one of the Raid Battles, while the other two relate to berry distribution. Trainers can now send berries to Pokémon defending Gyms through the Pokémon info screen even when they aren't nearby.

Niantic has also added icons to the Pokémon information screen, so you can see how your Pokémon were caught, and has upgraded the search function in the collection menu.

Pokémon Go Fest

July 7: Pokémon Go is celebrating its first anniversary with the Go Fest event that will take place on Saturday, July 22, in Chicago's Grant Park. There will be three Challenge Windows throughout the day. The trainers in Chicago will try to unlock perks for Pokémon Go players in other cities and countries by catching certain types of Pokémon, with each one being tied to a different perk.

Meanwhile, trainers across the globe will also try to catch as many Pokémon as possible during the Challenge Windows with the hope of extending the duration of the bonuses unlocked by those attending the event. If they catch enough of them, a mystery challenge will be unveiled in Grant Park that will unlock a special bonus across the globe once completed.

Additionally, Niantic has also announced a few Pokémon Safari Zone events, which will take place at shopping centers in different countries during August and September. For more details, visit here.

Massive update with revamped Gyms and Raid Battles

July 12: Niantic Labs confirmed that it will be making some major upgrades to its Gyms with an upcoming update. The Gyms in the game will no longer be based on Prestige or training creatures, but instead, they'll have six permanent slots with an all-new motivation meter. The update will also be adding the much-anticipated co-op Raid Battles, where players will work together to defeat boss creatures at Gym locations.

New Summer Solstice event

June 8: From June 13 until June 20, the in-game Solstice Event will see players encounter more fire- and ice-type Pokémon, receive huge XP bonuses for accurate Poké Ball tossing, and get discounted Lucky Eggs at the in-game shop. Meanwhile, the company will hold its "first-ever" real-world Pokémon Go event: Pokémon Go Fest Chicago. This will take place in Grant Park on July 22 and promises "a ton of exciting festivities."

Tickets for Pokémon Go Fest will go live at http://ift.tt/2sGwzXf on Monday, June 19 at 10:00 AM PDT. Further, Niantic said it would hold events in European shopping centers between June and September, but hasn't gotten into specifics yet.

Harman unveils Alexa- and Google Assistant-powered speakers

Harman

The Harman Kardon Allure is a humidifier-looking speaker powered by Alexa, and the JBL Link series harbors Google Assistant.

Harman Kardon's Cortana-powered connected speaker just got leaked (Update: now official)

May 8, 2017

Harman may be a Samsung company now, as it kindly points out on the official website, but I suppose that doesn't mean its speakers can't be friends with Bixby's rivals: Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. At IFA, the international audio company has announced four new connected speakers, all of which can stream music, tell you the weather, and more with the help of either Alexa or Google Assistant.

Alexa-powered Allure

Let's start with the Harmon Kardon Allure, the company's first-ever smart speaker to be powered by Alexa (pictured above). It comes with four microphones with far-field voice detection technology, 360-degree sound, Bluetooth connectivity, and a bizarre-looking 360-degree ambient lighting design. Though the speaker is powered by Alexa, who already boasts having more than 20,000 skills, its design – at least for me – is underwhelming at best. Unlike the Cortana-powered Invoke, which is set to be released later in the year, the Allure looks like a mini humidifier with its translucent plastic-looking top. The asking price isn't too attractive either: the Allure will be available this winter for $249.95 in the US.

Google Assistant-powered Link

The Link 10 and 20 speakers are designed to be highly portable with 5 to 10 hours of battery life as well as IPX7 water-resistance.

As for Google Assistant's new home, it's a slightly different story. Harman's subsidiary JBL is behind the brand-new Link line-up, and you can say, "OK, Google" in order to activate Google's AI in all three speakers: Link 10, Link 20, and Link 300. JBL says that all three models "give consumers rich, full-range sound and instant access to their favorite music through voice control." The Link 10 and 20 speakers are designed to be highly portable with 5 to 10 hours of battery life as well as IPX7 water-resistance; that's better than the just-announced Sony LF-S50G. The Link 300, on the other hand, is meant to be a stationary speaker. The Link 5, 10, and 300 will be available this fall for $149, $199, and $249 respectively.

With Google's recent announcement of expanding its AI assistant to third party speakers, it seems Google Assistant will find even more new homes in the coming months. The same is true for Alexa, but the question is, "Are consumers ready to pay a premium for brand-name speakers that offer the exact same connected capabilities as Google and Amazon's very own?"

At any rate, with the introduction of the Allure and Link speakers, Harman now has a full line-up of speakers powered by three different AI assistants. It's probably safe to say that the company won't ever add Siri to that list, but given that it's now wholly-owned by Samsung, it wouldn't be surprising to see a Bixby-powered Harman speaker in the near future.

Given that it's now wholly-owned by Samsung, it wouldn't be surprising to see a Bixby-powered Harman speaker in the near future.

SanDisk unveils the world’s first 400 GB microSD card

Imagine being able to store up to 40 hours of Full HD videos inside a microSD card with transfer speeds of up to 100 MB/s. Yes, this is now possible thanks to the brand new (take a deep breath) 400 GB SanDisk Ultra microSDXC UHS-I card.

Deal: Amazon selling SanDisk 128 GB microSD card for $32.99 (35% off)

Deal: Amazon selling SanDisk 128 GB microSD card for $32.99 (35% off)

April 17, 2017

It was only three years ago that SanDisk unveiled its record-breaking 128 GB microSD card. That record was subsequently broken by none other than SanDisk the following year with its 200 GB microSD card. During the past few years, we've seen growing competition from companies like Samsung and its UFS memory cards, but today, SanDisk sets yet another world record: at 400 GB, the new Ultra-series microSD card is officially the world's highest capacity microSD card for use in mobile devices.

As Sven Rathjen, vice president of product marketing at Western Digital – the parent company of SanDisk – explains, "We continue to push technology boundaries and transform the way consumers use their mobile devices. By focusing on achieving new technology milestones, we enable consumers to keep up with their mobile-centric lifestyles with storage solutions they trust." And indeed, the all new SanDisk Ultra is a true beast when it comes to storage.

Theoretically speaking, this would allow you to move up to 1,200 photos per minute.

Not only can you save up to 40 hours of Full HD resolution videos, but those files can be transferred onto the card at maximum speed of 100 MB/s. While this is read speed we're talking about, theoretically speaking, this would allow you to move up to 1,200 photos per minute. With native support for Adoptable Storage enabled inside Android OS, SanDisk's new 400 GB microSD card could be the perfect solution for heavy multimedia consumers (granted that they have an Android device with a microSD slot, of course).

The asking price for this tiny beast? $249.99 in the US. Given that SanDisk's 256 GB microSD card retails for $199.99 (though usually priced lower), an extra $50 isn't too bad for almost double the storage. That said, however, it's likely that the retail price of the 400 GB microSD card will drop in the coming months on online sites such as Amazon.

Will you be buying SanDisk's 400 GB microSD card? How much storage do you need/use on your mobile device usually? Let us know by leaving a comment below!
