5 Android apps you shouldn’t miss this week! – Android Apps Weekly

Welcome to the 228th edition of Android Apps Weekly! Here are the big headlines from the last week:

  • Beme lost its founding members this week. Casey Neistat and Matt Hackett are not longer apart of the project. Neistat explained part of it in a video while Hackett took to Medium. Basically, the products aren't going so well and CNN is continuing on their own. This gives both creators a chance at a fresh start. Employees from Beme get to stay with CNN if they want to. For the last time, so long, Beme.
  • YouTube TV now has 300,000 subscribers. That's still pretty far away from competitors. Still, it shows fairy significant growth. YouTube TV isn't that old and it's growing rapidly. Sling TV still reigns with two million while DirecTV NOW trails with one million. The only other competitor above YouTube TV is Hulu TV with 450,000. We imagine they'll overtake Hulu eventually.
  • App Annie released one of its semi-annual app store reports. The reports indicate a lot of the same stuff. Google Play had vastly more downloads than Apple's App Store. However, the App Store generated almost twice as much revenue. Most of Google Play's non-gaming revenue was productivity subscriptions, particularly for cloud storage. Otherwise, it's mostly the same as it was last year.
  • Nintendo announced the end of Miitomo this week. The company's weird half-social, half-game title had a quick start but quickly became a foot note. The app removed all in-app purchases in preparation. There is one final event for players before the shut down. Otherwise, the game is just going to continue until the shut down. Nintendo plans on shutting the doors on May 9th, 2018. Goodbye, Miitomo!
  • Google took yet another shot at Amazon this week. This time YouTube removed its optimized version from Silk Browser. That means those with Fire TVs have to do it the old fashioned way with the normal desktop UI. It's quite difficult to use with a remote. The feud continues still and likely will for a while.

Amazon Go

Price: Free
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Amazon officially launched Amazon Go this week. It's a series of stores without checkout lines. Shoppers get charged upon exit automatically. The stores offer various types of food, grocery items, and similar stuff. You walk in, get what you want, and leave. The app charges you and gives you a receipt shortly afterward. The official app is a little basic. However, the real experience is in the store. You can't use this unless in a store. Stores are only in limited locales at this time. The app is free at least.

Prizefighters

Price: Free with in-app purchases
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Prizefighters is a new boxing game. It's a retro style game reminiscent of old arcade boxing games from the 1990's. It features a career mode with 29 different opponents, a skill tree with extra skills and abilities, and other customization features. The game also supports both portrait mode and landscape mode. Controls are simple enough and the graphics are very similar to a popular former console series. It's a fun little time killer if nothing else.

Plex VR

Price: Free
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Plex VR is the popular media server's latest app. It works a lot like normal Plex. However, it does everything in VR and even includes social features. The app supports 180-degree and 360-degree videos. The social elements supports up to four people watching the same thing simultaneously. You need a Google Daydream headset to use the app. Otherwise, it's completely free and works with your existing Plex setup (with a few small modifications).

Celestine Mars Explorer

Price: Free with in-app purchases
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Celestine Mars Explorer is a new runner style game. Players jetpack through various environments while avoiding obstacles, fighting bosses, and dealing with other things. Missions use three star ratings for additional challenge. Plus, there are various jetpacks to unlock. It's a freemium game. Thus, there is a ceiling on how good it is. However, this one is pretty fun for a little while to kill some time while waiting in line at places.

PyeongChang 2018 Official App

Price: Free
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
PyeongChang 2018 is the official app of the upcoming Winter Olympics. The features are more or less expected. You can view event results, schedules, and news from around the Winter Olympics. Additionally, there are some fan interaction features as well as information for accommodations, tourism, and other such things. It's useful for both people staying home and going to the event. It's also free with no in-app purchases. There are some bugs and a temporary app like this one likely won't get a ton of fixes. Enjoy it while you can!
