Budget phone Huawei Y7 Prime launches with Android Oreo

  • The Huawei Y7 Prime is an incremental update to last year's Huawei Y7, a budget-friendly phone for the overseas markets.
  • Although it is a budget phone, the device notably comes with Android Oreo out-of-the-box as well as face unlock technology.
  • Huawei didn't announce a price or release date, but it likely will be below $250 when it hits shelves.

Today is mostly all about Huawei's new flagship devices the Huawei P20 and P20 Pro. However, the Chinese company did take some time to launch a more budget-friendly device, the Huawei Y7 Prime.

This new device is an incremental upgrade to last year's Huawei Y7. That phone was by no means a powerhouse but delivered some decent specs at a budget-friendly price of €199 (~$247). The Y7 Prime upgrades some of the specs but also curiously downgrades others. The company didn't announce a price or release date for the Huawei Y7 Prime, but it most likely will stay in the sub-$250 range.

The Y7 Prime has a 5.99-inch display with a 1,440 x 720 resolution in an 18:9 aspect ratio (no notch!). The rear will feature a dual-camera setup with a 13MP shooter paired with a 2MP sensor for help with depth perception. The 8MP front-facing camera will capture some great selfies and will also feature face unlock technology, which is notable for a budget phone.

Curiously, the Y7 Prime has a downgraded battery size of 3,000mAh (the original Y7 had a 4,000mAh capacity). One would think the battery size would stay the same or increase, but perhaps with software and hardware upgrades in other areas, the battery capacity doesn't need to be as high to deliver the same amount of use.

Speaking of software, the device will ship with Android 8.0 Oreo skinned with Huawei's EMUI 8.0. A budget device coming with one of the latest versions of Android is certainly notable.

Processing that software will be a Qualcomm Snapdragon 435, 3GB of RAM, and 32GB of onboard storage. Last year's Huawei Y7 came with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage, so this is a welcome upgrade.

The Huawei Y7 only hit shelves in India, China, and other select countries, so it's unlikely the Y7 Prime will show up in the United States. However, it's nice to see that specs and software are becoming so advanced even in the budget realm.
