The Marvel cinematic universe is a money-making machine, grossing nearly $15 billion since the first Iron Man film dropped in 2008. But something has been missing from those 19 films (and counting), and that's members of the X-Men, like Wolverine.
That's because 21st Century Fox owned the X-Men franchise, so members of the mutant team couldn't appear in a Marvel film. But, since Disney paid about $52 billion for 21st Century Fox assets, we can finally see the X-Men fight along with the Avengers.
It looks like the first official crossover of the two teams will be in a mobile game called Marvel Strike Force. The free-to-play RPG lets you pick from over 60 Marvel characters (heroes and villains), and lets you team them up to battle your way across an all-new storyline. That means you can make a team of Wolverine (X-Men), Groot (Guardians of the Galaxy), Captain America (The Avengers), and even Spider-Man, who only first appeared in a Marvel film in Captain America: Civil War (Spidey is owned by Sony).
As you progress through the game, your characters will grow with new abilities. Here's a screenshot featuring Bullseye and all of his stats:
Marvel Strike Force is developed by FoxNext Games, and is the publisher's first title. The company promises that new storylines, features, and additional characters are already in development for Marvel Strike Force. It also promises more games to come for mobile, console, and PC platforms.
Although the game is free to download, there presumably will be some sort of revenue involved in playing the game. Whether that will be ad-support, the dreaded loot-crates, or spending money to buy new characters and missions, we are not sure. As this is the first title from FoxNext, we can't look to its other games to see its revenue model. So to find out, you'll have to play the game and see what happens.
