Monument Valley 2 has made a ton of money since it launched a year ago

  • Developer Ustwo Games have revealed the first year of sales and download data for its puzzle game sequel Monument Valley 2.
  • The game brought in over $10 million in revenue in its first year, nearly doubling the Year One sales of the first Monument Valley game.
  • Sales from iOS were the highest, although that version launched well before the Android port was released.

In June 2017, developer Ustwo Games finally released its long-awaited puzzle game sequel, Monument Valley 2, on iOS. It did the same for Android in October 2017. Today, as it did with the first game in the series, Ustwo posted an infographic on the first year of sales and downloads for Monument Valley 2. In short, the $4.99 game was a big hit, and did better in sales than Monument Valley 1 did in its first year.

The infographic shows that Monument Valley 2 brought in about $10.4 million in revenue in its first year, which is nearly double the $5.8 million that Monument Valley 1 did in its first year. Production costs for the first game (plus the expansion pack Forgotten Shores) were about $1.4 million with a team of eight developers. With Monument Valley 2, there were 16 team members and the production costs were about $2.3 million, with another $516,000 in marketing costs. Even with those increases in budget and team members, Monument Valley 2 was still extremely profitable for Ustwo.

In terms of sales by platform, iOS blew away all others with 2.075 million, well ahead of sales from the Google Play Store at 229,225, and Amazon at just 20,612. Another 1.17 million in sales came from "other platforms" which includes app stores that are not associated with Apple, Google, or Amazon. China was the biggest market for Monument Valley 2 in terms of sales, with a whopping 62.3 percent. The U.S. came in at a distant second at 16.3 percent. The game has been downloaded a total of just over 30 million times in its first year.

In a chat with The Verge, Ustwo's studio head Dan Gray says that the success of Monument Valley 2 is going to allow the development team to take some risks for its next projects, and that includes doing different things with "delivery methods that [he doesn't] think are being done right now." In the meantime, you can check out the entire Monument Valley 2 infographic below.
