AXE.IO

AXE.IO is a new, online multiplayer hack-and-slash game. That was a mouthful. Anyway, this game throws you into an arena with a bunch of other players. Your goal is to kill dragons and opponents to win. The game gifts you throwing axes as you slay opponents. Additionally, there's a berserker mode, 16 playable characters, leaderboards, and more. The game suffers from some truly unbearable lag on occasion. However, we expect fixes for issues like that as development continues. It's otherwise not bad for a throwaway online combat game.

Evoland 2 is the latest game in the popular, quirky franchise. This one incorporates a variety of different game styles in an ode to older video games. That includes traditional 2D fighter, top-down shooter, action-adventure, hack-and-slash, RPG, and it even includes a trading card mechanic. The graphics change as you play from retro to pseudo-modern. Additionally, the game has no in-app purchases or advertisements. This is actually a pretty good game. It's on sale for $5.99 at the time of this writing. The usual price is $9.99.

Goosebumps HorrorTown is a new city-builder sim with a Goosebumps theme. Your goal is to build and manage a town full of scary stuff from the Goosebumps franchise. It includes over 100 playable characters, tons of nostalgic value, and more. The game has a few bugs here and there. However, there is nothing too serious. Honestly, this is a bit of a cash grab for the Goosebumps franchise. Still, most people seem to enjoy it for at least a little while until that freemium grind kicks in.

Might & Magic: Elemental Guardians

Might & Magic: Elemental Guardians is a rare, new strategy RPG. It plays a lot like popular mobile RPGs such as Summoner Wars. You build a team, fight monsters, and use things like elements and equipment to give yourself an edge. You can build and customize your own hero and choose a house of magic. However, everything else is a pure character collection experience. Like Goosebumps, it's a bit a of a cash grab for the popular PC RPG franchise. However, also like Goosebumps, people seem to like it until the freemium elements kick in.

Minesweeper Genius

Price: $1.99
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Minesweeper Genius is a slightly different take on the popular PC classic. You play on various game boards. The left and top margins show you how many mines are on the board. Otherwise, the game plays exactly like the PC version. Levels are randomly generated. The mixture of classic Minesweeper with Sudoku adds a little more skill to the proceedings. It also features Google Play Games achievements and cloud saves. This is by no means a deep game. However, it's an excellent time waster with a cheap price tag and some nostalgic value.

Silly Walks

Price: Freemium

Silly Walks is a simple little runner. You run through a variety of obstacles and that's about it really. Each obstacle works slightly differently and gets more challenging as the game goes. The mechanics are simple and include swiping to make your character move. However, the game is not overly deep. Some other game features include a variety of playable characters, boss levels, and a racing mode. It's a time waster through and through. That's not necessarily a bad thing by any stretch.

Super Monkey Ball: Sakura Edition

Price: Free / $1.99
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Super Monkey Ball: Sakura Edition is the latest SEGA Forever game. It's a port of the popular Super Monkey Ball game on GameCube. The game features 125 levels through six worlds. Additionally, you get four mini-games, simple mechanics, and local multiplayer with up to four other players. SEGA made some graphical changes, but otherwise the game is mostly the same as its previous releases. It's also free with advertising. You can pay $1.99 one time to remove the ads. It's a good retro game with some nostalgic value. The advertising is a little awful, though, so we recommend just forking out the $1.99 for the full game.

Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth

Price: $17.99
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth is another port of an old console game. This one is an old PlayStation game from Square Enix. It's an RPG where you recruit doomed warriors for a heavenly war. It features a time limit, simplified combat from its predecessor, a good narrative, and a good soundtrack. The graphics are updated. However, they don't translate well to mobile in general. It's a competent port and it played fine during our testing. However, $17.99 for this one might be a bit of a stretch. We recommend waiting for a sale. There are additional in-app purchases for in-game quirks like increased XP as well, but they are optional. The game plays as it always has without them.

Westworld

Price: Freemium
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Westworld is a new city-builder sim with elements of the popular TV show. You build your own Westworld with its own hosts. There are over 170 collectible characters, a strategy element like most sims, and some other game features. The main premise is to match the appropriate guests with the appropriate hosts. If we're being honest, it's a bit of a cash grab for the show. Mobile RPGs do this all the time with anime so it's nothing we haven't seen before. However, fans of the show may enjoy the city building experience for a while before the freemium elements kick in. It's good, but not great.
