March’s Distribution Numbers for Android have Lollipop on Top, Nougat at 2.8%

Google recently published the monthly Android security update, which meant Android's new distribution numbers weren't that far behind. You can find details about this month's security update here, but we're also seeing OEMs like Samsung and BlackBerry publish their own security bulletin details as well. There was even a new update rolled out to a couple of Huawei devices this month due to a vulnerability that could execute malicious code on them.

As far as Android's distributions numbers are concerned, we're not seeing any drastic changes this month when compared to last month. 7.0 Nougat first appeared in the distribution charts back in November of last year with a debut of 0.3% of the install base. Now, we have learned that Nougat is currently installed on 2.8% of active Android devices right now. As low as it sounds, this is actually more than double compared to last month when it topped out at 1.2%.

Android 6.0.x Marshmallow currently has a sizable 31.3% of the market, which is up from 30.7% compared to last month. These were the only increases that we saw in March's data though as the rest of the dessert family all saw a decrease (or stayed the same). So Android 5.x Lollipop went from 32.9% down to 32.5%, Android 4.4.x KitKat went from 21.9% down to 20.8% and then all of Jelly Bean went from 11.3% down to 10.6%.

Both Ice Cream Sandwich and Gingerbread are still holding on with 1.0% of actively installed devices. Remember, these numbers aren't 100% accurate as the data is only pulled from devices which actually checked the Google Play Store during that 7-day period. We're also not seeing any flavor of Android on this chart that represent less than 0.1% of the active install base either. So while Froyo was pushed off the chart back in January, there are still a number of devices still running that software.
