1. Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL
The Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL have managed to outshine much of the competition, even half a year after their release. Google's official handsets are known for color accuracy, great detail, on-spot exposure, and amazing low-light Photography (thanks to Night Sight).
Google accomplished great camera performance out of a single camera with no spec sheet bells or whistles. We can thank computational photography and software enhancements for this, which are departments where the search giant shines.
If you aren't a fan of the notch or are looking for a less expensive option, the smaller Pixel 3 is the way to go. The only differences between the two are that the Pixel 3 has a 5.5-inch Full HD+ screen and comes with a slightly smaller battery. You get all the same specs and features with both, including wireless charging, dust and water resistance, dual front-facing cameras, and an excellent software experience.
The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are expensive, though. The smaller Pixel 3 starts at $799 while the Pixel 3 XL will set you back an additional $100.

2. Google Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL
If you can live without high-end specs, a lesser front-facing camera, and more money in the bank, you should go for the Google Pixel 3a or Pixel 3a XL. The Pixel 3a starts at just $399 and comes with essentially the same amazing rear camera hardware and software you find on the Pixel 3. Alternatively, you can get yourself the Google Pixel 3a XL for $479.
The most notable trade-offs are that the 3a versions come a plastic construction instead of glass, a Snapdragon 670 SoC as opposed to a Snapdragon 845, and one 8MP front-facing camera (not two). Regardless, the phone still looks and feels good, operates marvellously, and takes decent selfies.

3. Samsung Galaxy Note 9
The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 shows Samsung knows how to make a premium smartphone. The phone doesn't compromise on its hardware at any point. You get the Snapdragon 845 processor onboard, with 6GB or 8GB of RAM, up to 512GB of built-in storage, and a 4,000mAh battery.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 uses the exact same set of dual 12MP sensors from the Galaxy S9 Plus, including the dual-aperture secondary lens that was debuted in that device. While images are nearly identical to those from the Galaxy S9 Plus, Samsung threw in a couple of software tricks to give the Galaxy Note 9 the upper hand. These include a new scene detection mode and a flaw detection feature that are both powered by classification-based machine learning.
