Easily send kaomoji (ಠ_ಠ) with these Android Messages shortcuts

  • You can easily send kaomoji using shortcuts built into Android Messages.
  • Kaomoji are the silly ASCII emojis like the shruggie ( ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ) and the table flip, pictured above.
  • The shortcut feature is a slow rollout, so you might not have it yet.

It can be a real pain to send the shruggie kaomoji ( ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ). If you don't have an app or shortcut set up, you have to find the ASCII design in use somewhere else, and then copy-and-paste. Well, Google is going to save you some time as it is adding shortcuts in Android Messages that will make your kaomoji dreams come true.

To send a shruggie, you would simply type /shrug or /shruggie in Android Messages. Doing so converts the text into the shruggie. However, it only works at the beginning of the text message, and is therefore ideal to send on its own rather than trying to combine it with other text. If this doesn't seem that novel to you, that's because similar functionality is in Google Hangouts. However, the idea of being able to use kaomoji in your standard texting app is pretty cool, especially since these will also work in the new Android Messages for web application.
