- Oreo-based EMUI 8.0 update rollout begins for Honor 9 and Honor 8 Pro in the UK.
- Upgrade adds Picture-in-Picture mode, notification dots, as well as EMUI-specific speed and efficiency improvements.
- Rollout may be a test before a wider global release, but Honor has not confirmed its future plans.
Honor recently revealed which phones in its product portfolio will be updated to EMUI 8.0 – the latest version of Huawei's custom UI based on Android 8.0 Oreo. We can now tick the Honor 9 and Honor 8 Pro off that list as Honor has confirmed that the latest OS upgrade is rolling out for devices in the UK.
The Honor 8 Pro will be the first of the two to enjoy the benefits of Oreo via an OTA update. The Honor 9 update will then follow "slightly later" in the region. Unfortunately, there's no word on a wider international release, but if the initial rollout goes ahead smoothly it shouldn't be too long before all Honor 9 and 8 Pro users wake up to an update notification.
As well as standard Oreo features like Picture-in-Picture mode, notification dots, new emojis, and much more, Honor says the EMUI 8.0 update will lead to improved boot times and more efficient handling of background activity on both devices. Smart Tips will also get a boost with more accurate user recommendations based on usage.
The two phones join the recently-released Honor View 10 in enjoying the benefits of Oreo. The affordable flagship runs EMUI 8.0 out-of-the-box, as does the mid-range Honor 9 Lite which launched in India earlier this month.
Despite its initial omission and mixed messages from the Huawei sub-brand, Honor recently confirmed that 2016's Honor 8 will also be upgraded to EMUI 8.0. With updates for the Honor 7X, Honor V8, Honor Note 8, Honor 8 Lite, Honor 9 Lite, and Honor V9 also in the pipeline, the Chinese company has a fair amount of work to do before it starts catching up with the latest version of Google's OS, Android 8.1 Oreo.
