Welcome to the 232nd edition of Android Apps Weekly! Here are the big headlines this week:
- Swype keyboard is dead. The longtime iconic keyboard shut its doors earlier this week. Swype was the first keyboard with gesture typing, a feature copied by SwiftKey, Gboard, and many other keyboards. It was originally a feature on specific mobile devices. It eventually became its own app. The company is focusing on developing AI solutions for businesses, whatever that means. Goodbye Swype.
- Fire Emblem Heroes is Nintendo's most financially successful game right now. The game pulled down about $295 million in its first year. This is vastly more than Super Mario Run and obviously more than the now defunct Miitomo. It's obviously not the highest earner in the mobile gaming universe. However, it is officially Nintendo's strongest foothold in the industry. We expect more freemium Nintendo games to follow suit.
- Flixster shut its doors in the US this week. Fandango acquired Flixster a couple of years ago. Apparently it hasn't been as successful as planned. Now, the app is shutting down its video streaming service. They now direct their customers to Vudu. It still lets people order movie tickets and view reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. It's really only shutting down the video streaming part.
- Snap responded to user feedback this week. Many people panned the latest UI overhaul and feature update. The company still refused a roll back to the previous UI. However, they did announce more UI changes, including customizable tabs to better differentiate between various features. These changes should roll out in the coming weeks.
- Last week we talked about Reply. It's a new Google initiative to bring quick replies to non-Google messaging apps. An APK turned up this week. It's available on APK Mirror right now. The app is still in testing. Thus, it has bugs and it's not overly stable. However, it's a chance to check out what Google has cooking with this project. The app is, of course, free to download. Flippy is a minimal new arcade game. There really isn't much to this one. You run along a track while avoiding spikes and other obstacles. The goal is to pass as many other runners as possible. It also includes missions, unlockable content, and more. Otherwise, everything about this one is pretty straightforward. It's free with advertising. The game costs $2.49 for the full version. Some people really like it while others really don't.
Stories is a new journal and mood tracker app. It lets you write down tidbits about your day, your mood, and anything else you want to get off of your chest. The app features hashtags and mentions similar to Twitter. That helps make your entries more searchable for future use. Additionally, the app comes with a dark theme, gorgeous Material Design, app shortcuts, and above average organizational features. It's in beta. Thus, you can expect bugs. Otherwise, the app is free, at least for now.
Earth Wars is a port from a Nintendo Switch game of the same name. It features a unique, if somewhat unusual graphic style. The game also features hack and slash combat, a sci-fi theme, and a fairly decent narrative for a mobile game. A recent update also added game controller support as well. It doesn't take long to get combos rolling in this side-scroller. It is a premium mobile game. That means it runs for $4.49, but it also has no in-app purchases or advertisements.
Bing Places for Business is a new app from Microsoft, obviously. The app lets business owners input information about their business similarly to Google Maps. That includes things like business name, type, phone number, hours of operation, and other essential information. Bing is in direct competition with Google. Thus, it may behoove business owners to jump on this one early to get their information on both. The app is free, but it's also in beta. Be prepared for the occasional bug. Those who don't want to deal with bugs may want to wait for the official release.
Street Fighter IV Champion Edition is one of the most hyped games of 2018. Capcom may have hit the ground a little too early, though. The game is having issues with frame rates, lack of controller support, and other such issues. However, these are fixable if Capcom pays attention to feedback. Otherwise, the game features 32 fighters, an actual, on-screen buttons, and, well, it's an actual fighting game. This is a refreshing vacation away from the simple tap fighters that other franchises put out (cough, Tekken Mobile, cough). We really hope Capcom fixes this one. It should be a top three best fighter on mobile.
