Google adds another nail in Google Play Music’s coffin thanks to YouTube Music

YouTube Premium Music Logo in App

It's obvious that Google has been steadily trying to kill Google Play Music for a while now. Today, that is more apparent than ever. Google announced that YouTube Music will replace it as the preinstalled music app on all new devices launching with Android 10 and Android 9, including future Pixel devices.

The announcement was released on YouTube's official blog. It was only a matter of time before Google made a move like this. Google Play Music has been neglected for some time now. Google has focused its development efforts on YouTube Music, and the only major update Google Play Music received recently removed features.

Now that it won't be preinstalled on devices, the service probably won't be receiving an influx of new users anytime soon. Plus, YouTube Music has brand recognition, so we can expect more and more people confidently choosing it as their preferred music streaming service now that it is preinstalled.

Are you still a Google Play Music user? Fret not! You can still download the app and use it as you normally would…for now. Who knows when Google will finally take the leap and kill the service. It's only a matter of time before we have to say "adios" to Google's music service of yesteryear in favor of its future.
