Spotify is testing out a new premium plan that offers two subscriptions over the six that are currently included with the Premium for Family plan. Called Premium Duo, it appears that plan has its sight set on couples and brings with it some additions over the regular family plan.
According to The Verge, Premium Duo offers two premium subscriptions at a discounted price of 12.49 euros (~$14) a month. This represents a saving of 2.5 euros (~$2.80) every month over the regular family plan and a much more substantial 7.5 euros (~$8.40) saving over two individual subscriptions.
To sweeten the deal, the plan comes with a special playlist called Duo Mix. This is a unified playlist for the two accounts that takes into account individual listening preferences. Think of it like Spotify's existing Daily Mix but with music preferences from two different accounts. It is possible to further tweak the mix for a more chill or upbeat tempo by tapping the dedicated icons.
Spotify's fresh new plan comes at a time when it is trying to expand its paying customer base. Spotify continued to make losses in the third quarter of 2018 despite increasing the premium subscriber account to 87 million (h/t Forbes). The monthly active user base is estimated to be 191 million. From its launch in India to the acquisition of podcasting giants Gimlet Media and Anchor, the music streaming giant is doing all it can to convert free subscribers to the premium tier.
According to The Verge, the plan has been spotted in Colombia, Chile, Denmark, Ireland and Poland. We expect more countries to be added to this list over time. Do you think the new, more affordable plan might spur couples to upgrade over sharing subscriptions? Let us know in the comments section.
