A leaked video showing off what is believed to be the upcoming Oppo Reno has emerged. The video, which appeared on Weibo earlier today (via Fone Arena), shows off the phone with what looks like a shark fin-style, pop-up selfie camera.
Oppo is set to reveal its new Reno series on April 10 and the company has already teased it. However, we were originally treating leaked renders of its supposed pop-up camera design (above) with extreme caution. What looked like a pretty out-there rumor now seems like it might be legit, though, as the leaked Weibo footage (which we've turned into a GIF below) is rather firm evidence.
You can see the camera housing pop up when the operator changes the phone from shooting using the rear-facing cameras to the selfie camera. Based on the footage, it seems to be motorized.
The best pop-up selfie camera design yet?
Android manufacturers are going to great lengths to optimize their smartphone display area with punch-hole displays and pop-up cameras. While it tells us nothing about how good the actual photos would be, this is, for me, the best pop-up camera style yet.
It may not be subtle, but it does look like a design choice intended to make the phone more visually appealing, rather than a design borne out of manufacturing constraints. Unfortunately, some pop-up cameras do have that vibe.
What's more, if it has the kind of screen/body ratio that the renders suggest, the choice to use a pop-up camera (rather than one housed on the front of the phone) seems like an entirely smart move.
We'll have to wait two weeks to see if these rumors are true, but I hope they are; I'd like to see this device become a reality, if only to play the Jaws theme on it while I switch the selfie camera on and off.
