Huawei P30 Pro new DxOMark king, dethrones Huawei’s 2018 flagships

The Huawei P30 Pro packs some impressive camera technology, with a 5x periscope zoom camera being one of the biggest improvements. It looks like these changes are enough for the device to take the number one spot on DxOMark.

The camera testing company gave the Huawei P30 Pro a total score of 112 points, beating the Mate 20 Pro (109) and P20 Pro (109). Huawei's latest flagship received a photo score of 119 points, and a video score of 97 (the latter is one point below the P20 Pro's 98 points).

When it comes to photos, DxOMark praised the phone's zoom capabilities, the level of detail in all scenarios (including low-light), depth effects, and the fast autofocus. In fact, the firm said Huawei's camera setup makes "usable" 10x zoom on smartphones a reality. However, DxOMark did criticize the "unnatural rendering" of the sky color in outdoor snaps, the reduced dynamic range compared to the Mate 20 Pro, a variety of image artifacts, and soft corners when zooming to medium range.

The Huawei P30 Pro was also lauded for its video performance, as the testing firm specifically praised the image stabilization, autofocus capabilities, noise levels in decent light, details, and color rendering. But the company called out the noise levels in low light environments, exposure and white balance "instabilities," and frame-rate changes when panning.

Editor's Pick

"The zoom on its own will make the new Huawei an extremely tempting option for many mobile photographers, but the camera performs very well in almost all other areas as well. The bokeh mode is the best we have seen; image detail and noise levels are excellent across all light levels; and the camera records high-quality footage in video mode," DxOMark noted in its breakdown.
