The Redmi Note 5 has already been announced according to some reports but under a different name. Rumors suggest the Redmi 5 Plus, which was revealed in December, is the successor to the Redmi Note 4.
But we've come across a few other rumors that tell us a different story. These claim the Redmi Note 5 is still in the pipeline and will make its debut soon. They also share a few details about the specs, design, and price of the upcoming smartphone, which we take a closer look at in this post.

The Redmi Note 5's exact launch date is currently unknown. Some rumors claim the smartphone might make its debut this month, while others suggest it will be revealed in the second quarter of the year. What we do know is that we won't see it at MWC in Barcelona. In a statement given to Indian Express, Xiaomi said it won't announce new devices at the event.
As a refresher, the Redmi Note 4 was introduced in August 2017, while its predecessor saw the light of day in November 2016. The company hasn't been sticking to an annual release cycle, which makes it harder to predict the Redmi Note 5's launch date.
The Redmi Note 5 will likely first go on sale in China before heading to India a few months later, just like previous smartphones from the series. It's expected to be released in a few other countries as well, with the US not being one of them.

According to the listing (via MyDrivers), the handset will come with the Snapdragon 636 chipset, 4 GB of RAM, and 64 GB of storage. It's expected to sport a 5.99-inch Full HD+ display with an 18:9 aspect ratio.
The upcoming device may be equipped with a dual-camera setup featuring 16 and 5 MP sensors. Other specs and features include an 8 MP selfie snapper, a 4,100 mAh battery, facial recognition, and MIUI 9 likely based on Android Nougat.
Xiaomi may also reveal a second Redmi Note 5 variant.
Xiaomi may also take the wraps off a second Redmi Note 5 version that will come with less power under the hood and a cheaper price tag. The handset might be powered by the Snapdragon 630 processor, sport 3 GB of RAM, and offer 32 GB of storage. The rest of the specs should remain the same.
As a refresher, the Redmi Note 4 features a 5.5-inch Full HD display with a 16:9 aspect ratio, the Snapdragon 625 chipset, and 2, 3, or 4 GB of RAM. It also has a single 13 MP shooter on the back and packs a 4,100 mAh battery. This means the Redmi Note 5 could offer a larger screen, a faster processor, and a better (dual) camera than its predecessor. Specs including the battery and storage won't get an upgrade.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5: Design

A few alleged images of the Redmi Note 5 have popped up online, all suggesting the handset might have a near bezel-less design. That means it could have roughly the same footprint as its predecessor despite featuring a larger display.
One of the images was shared by Slashleaks and shows a device that sports thinner bezels than the Galaxy Note 8, LG V30, and most other so-called bezel-less smartphones. The back looks similar to that the Redmi Note 4, with the exception of the dual-camera setup.
We've come across two extra photos that tell us a similar story. The first one was posted on the Chinese social network Weibo and shows a device with a slightly different back than the one shared by Slashleaks — there's no rim surrounding the camera and the flash module is positioned below the sensors. The front looks a bit different as well.
The second image leaked by TargetYouTube looks similar to the picture above but with a few small differences here and there — see for yourself below.
We couldn't verify the authenticity of the images, so do take them with a grain of salt. We won't know for sure what the device looks like until it makes its debut.

For comparison, the 3 GB/32 GB model of the Redmi Note 4 launched at CNY 999 (around $160), whereas the version with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage went for CNY 1,399 (around $220). In India, these two models retailed for Rs. 10,999 and Rs. 12,999.
The Redmi 4 Note was a massive success in India. Xiaomi sold 250,000 units in the first ten minutes and over one million in the 45 days since its launch. The reason for the high sales numbers is the great price-performance ratio the smartphone offers.
It will be interesting to see how popular its successor will be if the pricing rumors are true. Increasing prices could have a negative effect on sales, especially in countries like India where the purchasing power is lower than in the West.
