OnePlus quickly debunks bogus rumor of a OnePlus X successor

  • A recent report alleged OnePlus will release the OnePlus X2 after the OnePlus 6.
  • The phone reportedly featured a Snapdragon 835 processor and dual\-camera system.
  • OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei dispelled the rumor on Twitter and said we should stop fake news from spreading.

The rumor mill is abuzz with news that OnePlus might be working on the successor to 2015's OnePlus X. However, OnePlus was quick to dispel that rumor and throw in a little extra.

According to the original report, which cited a person aware of OnePlus' plans, the OnePlus X2 would supposedly feature a 5.5-inch display, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 chipset, 4 GB of RAM, 32 GB or 64 GB of storage, and a 16 MP selfie camera with face unlock. The phone was also rumored to sport a 3,000 mAh battery and a dual-camera system, and would launch after the OnePlus 6 for around $250.

Given the alleged hardware specifications, the price tag raised some eyebrows. The OnePlus 5 and 5T also feature the Snapdragon 835 and while the two phones are likely selling well, that does not mean OnePlus has a surplus of Qualcomm processors.

Also, with no reports of OnePlus plans to reboot the X series prior to this one, there was cause for skepticism.

It seems that OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei validated that skepticism, since he took to Twitter to shoot down the rumor:

Pei went one step further and said people should do their part in stopping fake news from spreading:

Part of me wants to believe that the OnePlus X2 is real and will eventually be released. With almost nothing to go on at this point, though, OnePlus will have to announce the phone for me to believe it is real.
