5 Android apps you shouldn’t miss this week! – Android Apps Weekly

Welcome to the #231st edition of Android Apps Weekly! Here are the big headlines from the last week:

  • Google Chrome received a huge update this week. It now blocks ads that don't adhere to the Better Ad Standards. Google sends warnings to websites with offensive or intrusive advertising. That gives website owners time to update their ad structure before Chrome blocks everything. The update rolled out February 15th and it is a fairly big deal for websites. Users should start seeing significant changes in advertising over the next few weeks and months.
  • Alto's Odyssey has an official release date on iOS. It's February 22nd. Unfortunately, the Android version isn't launching at the same time. It'll be months before the official Android release, according to the developers. This isn't anything new, really. Developers often release to Android long after the iOS version. However, with the success of the sequel (Alto's Adventure), we would've thought that the release dates would be similar at least, not months away. It should be another popular game in the franchise, though.
  • Snapchat's latest update made lots of people angry. The update had many UI changes. For instance, Stories and the friends list merged together in a single screen. The Discovery feature got a revamp as well. A Change.org petition got 700,000 signatures from folks wanting the old design back. Snapchat said they weren't going to roll back changes and that new things take some time to settle in.
  • Facebook is testing an update for a downvote button. However, it's not just a general thumbs down. Instead, the button flags inappropriate content. The feature may be useful, though. It would help clean up nasty comment sections or bad posts on your timeline. Unfortunately, it still isn't the dislike button that we've all been asking for. In any case, about 5% of English speaking Facebook users see the feature while it's in testing.
  • YouTube's CEO discussed YouTube's music service at a Recode event this week. The new service should be out around March 2018. During the interview, she talked about how YouTube Red was always a music-first service. Additionally, new deals Google signed may allow YouTube Red to exist in up to 100 countries. We'll know more over the coming months. This could be a really big deal.

Gudak Cam

Price: $0.99
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Gudak Cam is a different kind of camera app. It emulates old school disposable cameras. For instance, it makes you wait three days to actually view the photos you take. Thus, the app hopes to make images taken more memorable. It's having some release day bugs. Many are complaining about the app's low quality, pixelated images. The developers are on the case according to their review responses. We'd recommend waiting for the bugs to get worked out before buying. Otherwise, the idea is pretty neat.

Hockey Nations 18

Price: Free / Up to $3.99
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Hockey Nations 18 is a rare, new mobile hockey game. It features dozens of teams from all around the world. The game also has challenges, three vs three games, live multiplayer games, and more. It's not an overly polished game. You won't find the kind of depth that you would in a console NHL game, for instance. Still, hockey games are fairly rare in the mobile landscape. It's also free to download. That way you can try it before spending any money.

Readably

Price: $4.99
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Readably is a new RSS reader app. It tires to reclaim the simplicity of RSS. That means it's easy to use with a clean UI and not a lot of flashy stuff. It also only supports Feedbin and Local RSS for now. Other services may appear later. Some of the app's other features some light customization and theming, a night mode, and more. It's a new app. That means it has some bugs. At $4.99, it may be a bit steep for many. We recommend thoroughly testing it out within Google Play's refund time.

Grand Summoner

Price: Free with in-app purchases
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Grand Summoner is a very okay mobile RPG. It features a lot of the same mechanics as other games in the genre. That includes character collecting mechanics, simple controls, and an endless supply of things to do. It won't break any records or go down as a super great game. However, fans of the genre can get their fix here. It also features online multiplayer with up to four players. That's pretty neat. It's also a freemium game.

Messenger Kids

Price: Free
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Messenger Kids is a polarizing new app from Facebook. It's a messaging service for younger kids (pre-teens, etc). Parents have full control over the child account. Additionally, messages can't be deleted and the app is full of kid-appropriate GIFs, stickers, and other such fluff. In terms of security from predators and whatnot, it's actually not half bad. However, many claim that kids are too young for this sort of stuff. In any case, the app is free like most of Facebook's products.
