App developers are pushing the envelope on a daily basis trying to improve and enhance our smartphone and tablet experiences. In fact, so many Android apps come out every day that it's difficult to keep track of them all. It's difficult to usurp the best of the best but if you're getting bored with what you've got and want to try something new, check out the best new Android apps from the last month! Byte
Price: Free
Byte is the spiritual successor to Vine. It's by the same group of people and it's basically the same thing as Vine. People log in, create six second looping videos, and share them to the platform. From there, people get recommendations, random Bytes to view, and more. It's a decent competitor to the hugely popular TikTok. The app has some bugs and it's a bit short on features. The developers promised to add more in the future.
Coronavirus by BITSENS
Price: Free / $4.99
Coronavirus is of of several apps to track the coronavirus outbreak. This one includes a good looking UI, simple controls, and plenty of information. The app also features information straight from WHO along with general information about the coronavirus, its symptoms, and how to prevent exposure and transmission. We wish the app had an interactive map that showed where the virus was spreading to, but the developers plan to add those features in future updates.
GitHub
Price: Free
GitHub is re-launching its mobile app and the new iteration is in early access beta right now. It lets you do the usual GitHub stuff including browsing projects, review code, view pull requests, and more. There is even a dark mode for those late nights. It's still rather early on and the latest changelog suggests more features are coming before the full release. It still seems to work well enough even in beta.
Malwarebytes Call Protection
Price: Free
Malwarebytes Call Protection is a new app from the popular antivirus company. It promises to block scam calls along with a few other things. The app uses crowd sourcing for its list of spam callers and automatically blocks them without much input required from you. Additionally, the app works the same with SMS. It doesn't really do much else but that's okay. We didn't expect a laundry list of features from a spam call blocker.
Microsoft Launcher Preview
Price: Free
Microsoft Launcher Preview is Microsoft's next attempt at a launcher. It looks and behaves differently from the regular Microsoft Launcher in the Play Store. Some of the features include an overhauled UI, a native dark theme, a landscape mode, and more. Microsoft also boasts a smaller launcher that uses less resources, less battery, and smoother, better performance. Of course, the developers are working on the app still and the app is in beta. Tread carefully, but it actually worked just fine in our testing.
Nvidia GeForce NOW
Price: Free / $4.99 per month
Nvidia GeForce NOW launched its video game streaming service officially this month. There are two ways to play. The first is free and lets you play for an hour at a time. The second is $4.99 per month, includes ray tracing (where available), longer session lengths, and priority access over the free users. There are many pros and cons to game streaming, but GeForce NOW is expected to compete with Stadia and Microsoft's XCloud for game streaming market share over the next few years.
Pokemon Home
Price: Free / $2.99 per month / $15.99 per year
Pokemon Home is the long-awaited cloud storage service for Pokemon players. You simply transfer your Pokemon to it from any of the core games and you can transfer it to any other core game, including Pokemon Sword and Shield. Additionally, the app lets you trade Pokemon with other players, keep track of the holes in your collection, and more. It obviously costs money to use it, but it isn't a terrible price. This is recommended for any hardcore Pokemon player.
Privy
Price: Free
Privy is a neat idea. It's basically a social media and messaging platform but strictly for you, your friends, and your family members. You invite people, they accept, and then you all communicate with each other. However, there is zero access to your profile from strangers, no ads, and no access by third parties. The developers boast a high level of privacy but we don't believe the app contains any of the super desirable things like encryption. Still, it's a lot better than Facebook. The trick is getting everybody to join and that's probably too monumental of a task.
QuakeAlertUSA
Price: Free
QuakeAlertUSA is an earthquake warning and tracking app. It warns you of an incoming earthquake 10-60 seconds in advance (depending on the earthquake's properties) and also gives you information such as magnitude, depth, location, and epicenter. The app sources its information from the USGS as well as ShakeAlert. We didn't have any earthquakes during testing so we couldn't test out the push notifications. However, everything else seems to work fine. This one had a rough launch but developers squashed a bunch of bugs between then and now.
Steno Notes
Price: Free / $2.99
Steno Notes is a fairly basic and minimal note taking app with a decent selection of features. The app includes a colorful UI, a dark mode, an organizational feature with hashtags as well as folders, and more. In terms of usability, it won't blow anyone's mind. However, it's clean, easy to use, and the search function works pretty well. This one is in early access beta so the features are still coming. We quite liked it in our testing.
