1. iFixit folds, pulls Galaxy Fold teardown
Repair website iFixit, famous for its insights into repairability, had a great look into the Samsung Galaxy Fold earlier this week. It gave the most rational explanations we've seen into why the Fold has been far more fragile than expected.
Little more than two days later, iFixit announced it had taken the post down — original link here, but it won't work — read on.
Why?
- iFixit explained via a short published statement, although it really doesn't answer the exact reason why and leaves us with questions.
- Here's the good part: "We were provided our Galaxy Fold unit by a trusted partner. Samsung has requested, through that partner, that iFixit remove its teardown. We are under no obligation to remove our analysis, legal or otherwise. But out of respect for this partner, whom we consider an ally in making devices more repairable, we are choosing to withdraw our story until we can purchase a Galaxy Fold at retail."
What does that mean?
- Samsung might well be within its rights to have tracked down who gave iFixit a sample review unit, and use its influence to try and reduce the damage to its brand.
- I don't blame iFixit for wanting to protect its business or its "partner" either.
- Buuuuut what this comes down to is a questionable attempt by Samsung to hose down negative coverage of the Samsung Galaxy Fold.
- This stuff, on the internet, just never works, as documented by the Streisand Effect.
- Of course you can read it via web.archive.org if you missed it already, because the internet doesn't forget.
- And of course, if you haven't read it yet, now you're much more likely to read it.
- This was just when the Fold issues and coverage of the problems was winding down. Most people understand the Fold isn't part of Samsung's regular line of flagships and a new technology with new challenges.
- This flat-out doesn't look good and suggests iFixit got too close to uncovering the issues — although, to be fair, there may be a more benign reason too.
- The crux of it all is we don't know, and that leaves questions and assumptions that Samsung appears to be covering up its problems.
- As Android Authority's Bogdan Petrovan said to me in a text, "I don't blame Samsung for throwing their weight around. I blame them for not anticipating this is going to happen."
