Yes! New OxygenOS betas for OnePlus 5/5T bring front-facing portrait mode

  • The latest beta builds of OxygenOS for the OnePlus 5 and 5T are here.
  • There are many new features and design tweaks in the updates, most notably a portrait mode effect for the front-facing camera.
  • OxygenOS beta features will likely make their way to official builds eventually.

If you own a OnePlus 5 or OnePlus 5T, you already have portrait mode capabilities using the dual-lens rear camera setup. However, when you switch to the single front-facing camera, you can't use portrait mode features.

If the lack of portrait mode for the front-facing camera irks you, we have good news: the latest open beta builds of OxygenOS (OB17 for the OP5 and OB15 for the OP5T) bring bokeh effects to the selfie-shooter.

Editor's Pick

Since there is only one camera lens on the front of the OnePlus 5 and 5T, we can only imagine that the bokeh effect from that one lens will be less effective than from the dual rear cameras. However, having the option to create bokeh-style portraits using the selfie camera is a very welcome feature, even if it doesn't look as nice.

There are many other updates to the OP5 and OP5T with the latest beta builds, check the changelog below:

System

  • Added Toast message source for Toast messages sent by background apps
  • Added description about sleep standby optimization when the function is turned on for the first time
  • Optimized background power consumption control
  • Fixed call recording issue in India

As with most beta software, OxygenOS features that appear in beta builds usually make their way to stable builds of the software eventually. Considering that OnePlus promised updates to Android 9.0 Pie for the OnePlus 5, 5T, 3T, and 3, it's likely that we'll see the features listed above (plus the ones from previous betas) integrated into stable Oreo builds before the end of the year.
