Huawei has been teasing us for a while about its plans to launch a foldable phone with a flexible display. Now, on the eve of the 2019 Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona, Spain, it appears that the look and name of that device have been leaked early by a promotional banner at the event; it shows that the name of this foldable phone will be the Huawei Mate X.
A picture of the banner was taken and posted by Twitter user @Gimme2pm.
Based on the banner, the Huawei Mate X folds its flexible screen outward, so it can expand its single display from being the size of a small smartphone to one that's the size of a tablet. Samsung's just-revealed foldable phone, the Galaxy Fold, takes a different approach; it has one smartphone-sized display when folded in, but it unfolds like a book to show a second, larger tablet-like screen.
The Huawei Mate X banner doesn't reveal anything else about this foldable phone, but we shouldn't have to wait much longer. The company plans to show the phone on Sunday, February 24, at its MWC media event, starting at 8:00 A.M. ET.
The company has also said it will show off 5G smartphones powered by its new Balong 5000 5G modem during the press event. It could also show a new true tablet device at the press conference.
