Original Article, September 27, 2018 (08:45 AM ET): About a month after its announcement, mobile role-playing game Dragalia Lost is now available in the U.S., Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau. There is no word yet on a wider international release, though that should come sometime soon.
Dragalia Lost might not be Nintendo's first foray into the world of mobile — Super Mario Run, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, and Fire Emblem Heroes come to mind — but it still represents some firsts for the company. This is the first Nintendo-developed game built from the ground-up for mobile, which will surely test how much weight the Nintendo name has in mobile. Up until now, the company's mobile titles were based on existing properties.
Considering that Dragalia Lost is a free-to-play game with in-app purchases and common mechanics like stamina and virtual currencies, that is a test Nintendo hopes it will pass.
Also of note is Japanese studio Cygames tapped as the co-developer. Up until now, Nintendo partnered with Japanese mobile developer DeNA for its mobile releases. That does not mean Nintendo is done with DeNA — the two companies are still working on Mario Kart Tour — but it shows that Nintendo wants to maximize its mobile presence with Japanese and Asian audiences.
As for Dragalia Lost itself, story details remain light. You can play the game either by yourself or with up to three other people, though the story should play out the same regardless of how many people you play with. Make sure you have an internet connection, however, since the game requires one for you to play.
