Google’s Slack competitor Hangouts Chat launches today for G Suite users

  • Hangouts Chat is Google's take on enterprise chatting, a direct competitor to the very popular Slack.
  • Google's messaging service is now available to all G Suite subscribers.
  • There is still a lot of confusion around the plethora of Hangouts-branded apps.

It's been almost a year since Google announced Hangouts Chat, its attempt at taking on Slack. Today, Hangouts Chat is out of beta and is available to every G Suite subscriber.

It was a year ago that Google announced its plans to transform Hangouts into an enterprise communication tool. Specifically, the company introduced two apps: Hangouts Meet for video chats, and Hangouts Chat for text messaging. While Hangouts Meet quietly launched back in March, 2017, Hangouts Chat remained accessible only to those who signed up via Google's Early Adopter Program. Until now, that is.

Google's Slack competitor is now out of beta and available to all G Suite subscribers, provided that it's approved by the managing company. If you are an approved G Suite user, you should be able to access Google's chat app in the coming days. Hangouts Chat currently supports 28 languages and can hold up to 8,000 members in each chatroom. However, what makes Chat unique compared to the plethora of enterprise messaging apps out there is the way it integrates AI and third-party services into the app.

The company's video-chatting and text-messaging services are now officially bifurcated into Allo and Chat, and Duo and Meet.

TechCrunch

For instance, bots like @Drive and @Meet help you organize files that have been shared in your chatroom and plan meetings based on your team members' availability. Not only that, Google has partnered up with third-party companies like UberCoference, Zoom, RingCentral, and Salesforce to bring fully-integrated access to those services right inside the chatroom.

Although it is clear that Hangouts Chat is Google's answer to Slack, its intention behind the collection of Hangouts-branded apps is not as clear. Google Hangouts in Gmail lives on while the company's video-chatting and text-messaging services are now officially bifurcated into Allo and Chat, and Duo and Meet. The common theme among these apps? They are all severely underutilized and underappreciated.

You can pre-register for Rayark’s rhythm game Cytus II on the Play Store

  • Cytus II, indie developer Rayark's latest mobile rhythm game, is available for pre-registration on the Play Store.
  • Cytus II includes over 50 songs and five DJs to pick from.
  • The game is already available on iOS, with the full experience going for $22.

Known for making rhythm games with catchy music and striking visuals, independent Taiwanese studio Rayark announced Cytus II is available for pre-registration on the Play Store. If there was any mobile rhythm game to pre-register for, it would be this one.

As with other mobile rhythm titles, Cytus II has you tap, tap and hold, and swipe your way to the end of each song. What separates Cytus II from others is its horizontal line which scrolls faster or slower, depending on the tempo. The system can make things tricky when rapidly tapping complicated chains of notes in quick succession. However, each song has three difficulty modes to choose from, so you can get used to the mechanics over time.

Speaking of songs, there are five DJs to choose from. Each DJ specializes in a certain theme and features at least 10 songs. For example, ROBO_Head features songs that would not be out of place in a techno-infused night club, while ConneR features a classical-oriented set.

Each DJ also has a storyline that intertwines with the other DJs, though can ignore them and just enjoy Cytus II for its music and gameplay. You must dive into the "IM" part of the game to unlock songs and difficulty levels, however.

Editor's Pick

Cytus II is not a free-to-play affair costs $3 on iOS and includes three of the five DJs. The remaining two DJs cost $10 each, bringing the total to $22 if you want the full experience. We have no reason to believe the pricing structure would differ on Android, but we will not know for sure until the game launches.

You can pre-register for Cytus II at the link below. In the meantime, if you want to download a rhythm game to tide you over, here's our list of the 10 best rhythm games for Android for some suggestions.

LG G7 (Neo) spotted at MWC 2018, but no one knows why it is there

Ynet

  • Even though LG officially announced the V30S, the company's G7 (Neo) was spotted at MWC 2018.
  • The G7 (Neo) was reportedly scrapped for another phone, so its appearance is surprising.
  • The G7 (Neo) might feature flagship specifications, but its future is a complete mystery.

LG's flagship plans for 2018 are nebulous at best, but during MWC 2018, Israeli publication Ynet gave us a look at what could have been: the LG G7 (Neo). It's strange this phone exists, let alone that it showed up at the world's largest gathering for the mobile industry.

According to VentureBeat's Evan Blass, the G7 (Neo) might be the device LG scrapped in favor of the device reportedly-codenamed Judy. Since LG plans to retire the G-series moniker, we do not know what Judy will officially be called once it becomes available.

If the G7 (Neo) was actually cancelled, why the phone still showed up at MWC 2018 is a mystery. Even weirder, Blass also said the G7 (Neo) was accompanied by two other phones — the Q7 and V35 — and a new watch.

Maybe LG wanted to show off the progress it made with Judy. Maybe the G7 (Neo) was meant to show off LG's design philosophy for the near future.

Whatever the G7 (Neo) is supposed to be, the phone has all the pre-requisites of a 2018 flagship smartphone. It features a 6-inch 3120 x 1440 OLED with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio and notch at the top, a terrible design which has unfortunately caught on with other Android phones. Around back are the two vertically-aligned 16 MP cameras and fingerprint sensor.

Editor's Pick

Under the hood, the G7 (Neo) features the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, up to 6 GB of RAM, up to 128 GB of storage, and a 3,000 mAh battery. We presume the phone runs Android Oreo out of the box, but there is no official word.

There is also no official word on the G7 (Neo) itself. The phone seemingly came out of nowhere and is a total enigma to us all.

We've reached out to LG for additional information and will update this article if we hear back.

Let the Tamagotchi craze consume you once again with My Tamagotchi Forever (Update: Pre-register for March launch)

Update (02/28/2018): Prepare your virtual life for a new arrival as Bandai Namco has announced that My Tamagotchi Forever will launch on Android and iOS devices on March 15th. Here's the official blurb to help pass the time:

Take good care of your Tamagotchi characters and watch them grow! Play mini games, make friends, explore Tamatown and customize outfits and the town itself for memorable moments you'll want to share with your friends. Depending on the care you provide and the things you do, they will evolve into different Tamagotchi characters as they grow. And when they are all grown up, help them choose the best career path, be it scientist, rockstar or detective!

The virtual pet game is now up for pre-registration on the Google Play Store so hit the button below to ensure you're one of the first to adopt one of the weird-looking cartoon creatures come launch day.

Previous coverage (11/23/2017): I don't know how I withstood the Tamagotchi craze of the 1990s and early 2000s — I can thank my Game Boy Color for that, I guess — but I understood why it was so popular. For those who fell into that craze, you might be happy to learn that, in celebration of Tamagotchi's 20th anniversary, Bandai Namco announced My Tamagotchi Forever for mobile.

Thanks to much more powerful hardware in this day and age, your Tamagotchi is far more expressive this time around that you might remember, with all of them living in a new town called Tamatown. Aesthetically, My Tamagotchi Forever seems to be inspired by Animal Crossing, a feeling that is somewhat extended to the gameplay, since you can walk around town and interact with other Tamagotchi characters.

Editor's Pick

As far as taking care of your own Tamagotchi is concerned, your job, as with the original toy 20 years ago, is to make sure they are taken care of. This means making sure they are fed, cleaned, washed, and get enough sleep. Your Tamagotchi evolves from one type to another, depending on how you care for them, so do not be surprised if you take poor care of them and they end up looking like a hideous, grumpy troll-looking thing.

All of this sounds great for Tamagotchi fans, but My Tamagotchi Forever is a free-to-play endeavor, which means that the game will likely include microtransactions. We will hold off judgment for when the game actually launches, but I'd be lying if I said I smiled when I learned about that.

Speaking of availability, My Tamagotchi Forever will be available for Android sometime in 2018. In the meantime, you can visit the game's website and register to inspire a Tamagotchi that will be in the game for all to see.

Live in rural Nevada? The Moon will have 4G LTE before you will

Public Domain Pictures

  • Nokia and Vodafone have partnered with PTScientists to bring 4G LTE data to the Moon.
  • PTScientists will send rovers to the lunar surface and use the 4G LTE network to transmit HD video back to Earth.
  • Will this finally shut up the Moon-landing hoaxers? Probably not, but it will be cool anyway.

If you live in rural Nevada, Montana, Wyoming, Washington, or any of the other places where people struggle to get a 4G LTE signal from any of the four major wireless carriers, you might be happy to know Moon people will soon have faster internet than you.

That's right, 4G LTE data is coming to the Moon. Since the current population of our natural satellite is (reportedly) zero, one might wonder why the Moon needs fast data speeds while many of us Earthlings are stuck on 3G or worse.

If you guessed "science," then you get a moon-shaped sticker! New-space firm PTScientists wants to send quattro rovers (partially engineered with Audi) to explore the surface of our lunar neighbor and return to the Apollo 17 landing site. Maybe the company intends to show that the landing site isn't there, since the Moon landing was a hoax.

Editor's Pick

OK, that last part was made up. PTScientists wants to explore the Moon with its rovers and beam back HD video to the Autonomous Landing and Navigation Module (ALINA). Doing this with analog radio would require a lot of energy and data transfer would be slow. With 4G LTE, PTScientists would be much better off. After making a formal request, Vodafone and Nokia decided to partner up to test out some space-grade mobile network equipment to blanket the moon in 4G LTE and make PTScientists' dreams a reality.

While this all probably sounds like a waste of money and resources to curmudgeons who hate science and the awesome stuff humanity can do to advance the species, this rollout will be a terrific opportunity to test new space-grade equipment and advance technology in networking, processing, and storage.

"These aims have potentially wide-ranging implications for many stakeholders and humanity as a whole, and we look forward to working closely with Vodafone and the other partners in the coming months, prior to the launch in 2019," said Nokia CTO Marcus Weldon. So don't worry, capitalism will still profit from this, which is all that's important, right?

Chrono Trigger for Android gets update, is a little less awful

Droid Gamers

  • Chrono Trigger, one of the greatest games of all time, got a very flawed port to Android back in 2012.
  • Slightly updated in 2014, the game just recently got a complete set of updates that fixed a lot of issues.
  • Many flaws remain, and reviewers are longing for a true, 1-to-1 port of the original.

Chrono Trigger is one of the greatest video games of all time, for any console, of any genre, in any decade. This isn't just us saying that. It's practically set in stone by the gaming community.

You can imagine if the game got messed with in any capacity, there would be a lot of angry nerds. It would be like the Special Editions of the original Star Wars trilogy all over again.

That's exactly what publisher Square Enix did in 2012, when it released a port of Chrono Trigger to Android phones via the Google Play Store. It was, shall we say, not too well received.

Editor's Pick

Poor sound, forced aspect ratios, a hard-to-read font, and little-to-no support for gamepads were the chief complaints from reviewers when the 2012 port popped up in the Play Store. Then things got even worse when people found out that upgrading above Android 4.2 Jelly Bean made the game unplayable. The game was left like that, for sale in a broken state, until it was finally fixed in 2014.

Now, to tie-in with the surprise port of the mobile version of Chrono Trigger on Steam, the game has gotten a new update on Android, which fixes some of its glaring issues.

Unfortunately, even with these fixes, the game is still woefully mediocre compared to the original SNES version. The font is still hard to read (Arial? Really?), the music is still poorly transferred, and the beautiful sprites are rendered in a weird, fuzzy hue.

The update adds an autosave feature, which is nice. It's new achievement function could be fun for those who have played through the game more times than they'd ever admit (like yours truly).  There's now finally gamepad support, too. Best of all, the new upgrades are free for people who purchased the original 2012 version.

If you buy this game and enjoy it as you should, please get your hands on a Super Nintendo and play the original version, or at least get an emulator and do it that way. Experiencing this game in its original state is an absolute must

Sony, we deserve more than a copied HTC design

This is what we've been waiting for? A Sony-made HTC U11?

The Sony Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact are two of the nicest phones at MWC this year.

Just like every other high-end device made by the company, both phones come with top-of-the-line specs, beautiful displays, and some impressive new camera features.

The biggest news with the XZ2 line isn't what's under the hood — rather, it's the hood itself.

Ever since the Xperia Z, pretty much every Sony phone has looked the same. The gigantic bezels above and below the display and angular design were defining features of the Xperia lineup, and that wasn't always a negative thing. Back in 2013, you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who didn't find the Xperia Z line attractive.

Back in 2013, you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who didn't find the Xperia Z line attractive.

Smartphone design drastically changed in 2017, when OEMs started adopting taller 18:9 displays and shrinking bezels. We were introduced to smartphones like the Galaxy S8 and Essential Phone which really stood out with their sleek, nearly bezel-less designs.

Sony obviously needed to change up its four-year-old design to keep up with the competition. We all knew it had to be done.

Then word got out the company was actually going to do something, and I was hyped. I always wanted to like Sony's phones so badly, but the lack of emphasis on design had been an instant turn-off for me. Would Sony's new phones ditch the sharp angles? Would they finally adopt 18:9 displays? I had so many questions.

When it came down to finally redesigning its phones, what did Sony do? It copied a company that knows how to design smartphones.

From the back, the Xperia XZ2 looks like a repackaged HTC U11. Is this really the best Sony could do?

I don't think the XZ2 is an ugly device — I really don't. The addition of an 18:9 display is very welcome. But the company had a long time to introduce original ideas, and it didn't. It took HTC's Liquid Surface design instead of even trying to make a unique looking device. Sony, we deserve a little more than that.

Innovation at Sony has stopped.

This shouldn't really come as a surprise, though. Sony CEO Kaz Hirai recently told The Guardian Sony is staying in the smartphone business to "play in the next paradigm shift," not because it thinks smartphones are the future. At this point, it seems like innovation at Sony has stopped.

Sony is hardly the worst offender. Asus' new ZenFone 5Z is a blatant ripoff of the iPhone X. Leagoo isn't any better. For a company that once led the smartphone world, it's now just a follower.

Google will teach you about AI and machine learning for free

learn with google ai Google

  • Google created a new site that it hopes will be a hub of information for artificial intelligence and machine learning.
  • On the site is a crash course on the two subjects, that Google initially developed for its employees.
  • In the future, the company hopes the site will expand with more courses and information, all free for everyone.

These days, you can't open a tech blog without seeing headlines about artificial intelligence and machine learning (there is a difference). Google knows that many folks don't have a clue how these technologies work, even people in technology industries where AI and machine learning are going to be incredibly useful, such as app development.

To combat this, Google launched a new site called Learn with Google AI. This information hub will be a place where people can "learn about core ML concepts, develop and hone your ML skills, and apply ML to real-world problems." The site is technical in nature, but it is intended to be a resource for everyone, from advanced researchers to total beginners.

But the crown jewel of the site is the Machine Learning Crash Course. When Google first started pursuing ML/AI technologies, it created the MLCC as an internal resource for its employees. Now the company has posted the entire, 15-hour course online for free, available for anyone to take.

Editor's Pick

Google emphasizes that the course can be taken and understood by anyone, but to really get the most out of it you should understand intro-level algebra and have some basic programming ability. If you find yourself lacking in the programming department, might we suggest you check this out?

This is only the beginning of what the Learning with Google AI site has in store. The company hopes to add more courses like the MLCC to the site in the future, creating a central repository for ML/AI education.

"AI can solve complex problems and has the potential to transform entire industries, which means it's crucial that AI reflect a diverse range of human perspectives and needs," says Google's Zuri Kemp. "That's why part of Google AI's mission is to help anyone interested in machine learning succeed."

Huawei Watch 3 is confirmed, but we’ll have to wait a while

  • Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei, confirmed that the Huawei Watch 3 is currently in development.
  • Since the Huawei Watch 2 is still selling well, Mr. Yu admitted that there are no plans to release the follow-up anytime soon.
  • With the Huawei P20 launch next month, it will be a long while before we hear any solid news on the new smartwatch.

Any hopes of Huawei announcing the Huawei Watch 2 follow-up before the end of Mobile World Congress 2018 are now dashed. Richard Yu, CEO of the company, informed TechRadar that while the Huawei Watch 3 is in development, it won't see a release anytime soon. The reason? The Huawei Watch 2 is selling well enough that a new model isn't necessary.

"It will come later – there's no hurry because Huawei Watch 2 sells well. We're not in a hurry, so we're launching the new watch later," Mr. Yu said.

Editor's Pick

Huawei announced the Watch 2 last year at Mobile World Congress 2017, so it seemed logical to expect a successor this year. Instead, Huawei chose to announce its next flagship smartphone at its own event in Paris next month and used MWC 2018 to launch the MateBook X Pro and the new entries in the MediaPad 5 series.

Since the Watch 2 is selling well and the Paris event in March seems to be all about the upcoming Huawei P20, it's unlikely that we'd see the Huawei Watch 3 until the second half of the year, possibly at IFA in September. Or, if the Watch 2 is still selling well, maybe not even until 2019.

The Huawei Watch 2 received favorable reviews, including from Android Authority, but it was dinged on its "sporty" design and cheap-feeling watch strap. Hopefully, the Watch 3 will address these issues; although if the Watch 2 indeed is selling well over a year after launch, Huawei may not change the formula up at all.

Since the launch of the P20 is generating quite a lot of buzz for Huawei, we probably won't hear much else about this new watch until after that event.

A smartphone drove our car, and we lived to tell the tale

It's an unusually cold morning in Barcelona and, together with two of my colleagues, I'm shivering in an empty parking lot outside the city's legendary Camp Nou.

We're waiting for our ride, a Porsche Panamera. Not bad from a bunch of humble Android bloggers, right? Alas, we're not here for a joyride. We've actually come to see Huawei's RoadReader project, probably the coolest application of AI at this year's MWC. (Admittedly, the bar for cool AI applications was pretty low.)

With RoadReader, Huawei wanted to showcase the AI prowess of its Mate 10 Pro smartphone and the Kirin 970 processor inside it. Put simply, the company turned a phone into the brains of a robotic Panamera.

Editor's Pick

There are caveats. We're not offered an autonomous tour around the Camp Nou. We're not even getting a ride around the parking lot. Instead, Huawei set up a short, straight test track designed to showcase the phone's ability to identify and react to obstacles using AI.

A fair bit of additional hardware is required to make the magic happen. Mounted on top of the limousine, a modified bag carrier houses a high-end Sony DSLR and a Teradek Bolt 3000 wireless video transceiver (catalog price: $10,490), which act as the eyes feeding images into the Mate 10 Pro's brain. The trunk is also packed with robotic equipment that converts the input from the Mate 10 Pro into commands for the car.

After the team solves a glitch with the custom app running RoadReader, we're finally ready to put our lives into the virtual hands of an Android smartphone. There's a safety driver behind the wheel, and a big red button mounted on the Panamera's center console lets us stop the car in case things go awry. But I still feel a little anxious, and the fact that we had to sign waivers absolving Huawei of any liability did not help.

There are two phases to the demo. In the first one, the car slowly makes its way down the test track looking for – and learning – the objects it needs to avoid. Huawei tested the system with hundreds of objects, but for the demo, it settled on cardboard cutouts showing a bicycle, an oversized soccer ball, and a dog.

After the slow run, it's time for the real deal. First, we tell the phone what evasive action it should take for each obstacle: swerve to the left, swerve to the right, or simply brake.

A couple more taps on the screen and we barrel down the track. The phone is driving.

It's all over in a few seconds. The car, or more accurately, the phone, performed just as I instructed it to, taking a hard swerve to the right to avoid the cardboard dog attendants rolled out on the track. The dog is unscathed, the car is in one piece, and the Android bloggers inside breathe a sigh of relief.

While Huawei's test may sound a bit underwhelming, it's still a cool thing to experience. In part, it's thanks to the physical sensation of accelerating in a powerful car. But I also appreciated what Huawei was able to do in just five weeks with a consumer device that 90 percent of users will only ever use for Facebook and YouTube.

The Mate 10 Pro can run complex machine learning operations and can do it fast enough to control a hunk of metal moving at more than 50 kmph. Multiple times a second, the device extracts still frames from the video feed it receives from the roof-mounted camera. It then runs image recognition algorithms on each frame, looking for potential obstacles on the road. As soon as an obstacle is detected, the phone tells the car to maneuver itself out of harm's way.

Editor's Pick

The system harnesses the NPU inside the Kirin 970 processor, and Google's TensorFlow library of machine learning tools. It all happens locally and on-the-fly. It's a good example of what developers can do with these tools and other AI platforms. It's definitely more exciting than the other AI application that Huawei can show for now – a live translation app developed by Microsoft.

Artificial Intelligence has become a major buzzword in the mobile industry – companies are taking advantage of the vagueness of the term to slap it on features that have nothing to do with machine learning. AI is also highly technical and, let's face it, difficult to understand and boring for most people. It's good to see Huawei attempt to demonstrate the concept with a real-world application we can all relate to.

Peter Gauden, a marketing chief with Huawei, was quick to clarify that what we saw in Barcelona was just a cool concept that should not be taken as a suggestion that Huawei is entering the red-hot autonomous driving market. But Gauden also pointed out that Huawei owns the full stack, from the AI-optimized silicon, to popular consumer devices, software prowess, and cutting-edge telecom infrastructure. In other words – and this is entirely speculation – if Huawei would ever decide to try its hand at self-driving tech or any other application of AI, it would be better positioned than most companies out there.

How to pre-book the Samsung Galaxy S9/S9 Plus in India (Update: Launch date and pricing leaked)

Update (02/28): Samsung has reportedly started sending out invites to press in India for a launch event scheduled for March 6th where it is all-but-certain to detail Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus availability in the region.

According to Gadgets 360 sources, the Galaxy S9 (64 GB) will retail for Rs. 57,900, while the larger Galaxy S9 Plus (64 GB) will be priced at 64,900. The 256 GB variants will allegedly retail for Rs. 65,900 and Rs. 72,900, respectively. The report also claims that the 128 GB models will not be available at launch.

Original story (02/26): Samsung finally lifted the lid on its latest flagships at MWC and with an official release date of March 16, it won't be long until most consumers around the world get their hands on the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus.

Unfortunately, the wait will be a little longer for buyers in India as the South Korean giant has yet to detail its launch plans for the region. Full pricing and availability details are expected in early March, but avid Galaxy fans can now pre-book a device to reserve the phone they want on launch day.

Editor's Pick

Unlike a simple pre-order, the pre-booking process is essentially a way of reserving a purchase slot before anyone else.

With the Galaxy S9 or S9 Plus, buyers will have to stump up Rs. 2,000 (around $31) for a coupon which can then be redeemed against the phone's full retail price.

This can all be done via Samsung India's online store. All you need to do is select either the regular or plus-sized model, pick a colorway (Midnight Black, Coral Blue, or Lilac Purple) and provide a few personal details to secure your place at the front of the queue. The same process applies to select Samsung retail stores via a bespoke Pre-book app.

When launch day arrives, those who have pre-booked will receive an SMS and/or email with all of the necessary details. Then it's just a matter of logging back into your Samsung account and applying the pre-book coupon at checkout. Nice and easy! Hit the button below to head to Samsung India's store page for yourself.

As for buyers in the US and beyond, be sure to check out our pricing and availability post here. We have plenty of other Samsung Galaxy S9 coverage too, including a specs breakdown, a run-through of the top 9 features, and a hands-on preview with our early impressions of the two phones ahead of a full review at a later date.

Nokia brings back its Pro Camera mode from the dead for its Android phones

  • HMD Global announced the return of the Nokia Pro Camera mode for current Nokia phones with Zeiss optics.
  • These include the Nokia 7 Plus, Nokia 8 Sirocco, and Nokia 8.
  • HMD Global did not say when the current Camera app would be updated with the revived mode.

As forgettable as Nokia's Windows Phone days were, they introduced several smartphones whose cameras were more capable than anything else on the market. That was partially thanks to the Nokia Pro Camera mode, which introduced pro-level manual controls and was  thought dead after Nokia's unceremonious exit from the Windows Phone market.

That will soon change, however, as HMD Global announced the return of the Nokia Pro Camera mode for its top-tier Android smartphones.

HMD Global chief product officer Juho Sarvikas announced the revival during MWC 2018 and said every Nokia phone with Zeiss optics would get the feature. These devices include the Nokia 7 Plus and Nokia 8 Sirocco, though Sarvikas confirmed on Twitter that the Nokia 8 would also be supported.

The current Nokia Pro Camera mode appears similar to its previous incarnation. You still have a radial menu that lets you manually adjust the white balance, focus, ISO, shutter speed, and exposure compensation. You see the results on the screen as you make your adjustments to make sure you get the shot you want.

Slightly different is the Nokia Pro Camera mode's appearance. Whereas the previous incarnation featured dark navy menus on the top and bottom, the new version features a black background on the bottom only. The new version also sports new icons and improved icon placement, such as a more prominent camera switch.

HMD Global did not say when the Nokia Pro Camera mode would be available. The existing Camera app would presumably be updated when the Nokia 7 Plus and Nokia 8 Sirocco become available, so we will keep an eye out for when that happens.

Leaked image of the Huawei P20 Lite shows off iPhone X-notch and vertically-aligned cameras

VentureBeat

  • Another leaked image of Huawei's rumored P20 Lite recently surfaced.
  • The P20 Lite reportedly features an iPhone X-style notch, dual cameras, and a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor.
  • Huawei is expected to announce the P20 Lite alongside the P20 and P20 Plus during its March 23 event in Paris.

Even though March 23 is almost guaranteed to bring the Huawei P20 and P20 Plus, growing evidence in recent weeks suggest a third smartphone: the P20 Lite. Set up as the successor to last year's P10 Lite, the P20 Lite recently popped up again, courtesy of VentureBeat's Evan Blass.

The P20 Lite render we saw a few weeks ago showed off the iPhone X-style notch, but the leaked image further cements the feature. The Asus Zenfone 5's notch is just as small and includes no special hardware, so we can assume the same about the P20 Lite's.

Elsewhere, the P20 Lite reportedly features a 5.6-inch, 2250 x 1080 display. If true, it would corroborate the dimensions listed in the FCC documents that suggest the phone features a display with a 19:9 aspect ratio. Regardless of the aspect ratio, the P20 Lite looks to feature minimal bezels along the sides.

Around the back is a circular fingerprint sensor and vertically-aligned dual-camera system. The leak points to a pair of 16 MP sensor with hybrid zoom capabilities, though we do not know how the second camera will be used.

Under the hood, the P20 Lite reportedly sports Huawei's octa-core Kirin 659 processor, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of internal storage, and a 3,520 mAh battery. Finally, the P20 Lite reportedly features EMUI 8.0 on top of Android Oreo.

Not much else is known about the P20 Lite, though there have been plenty of rumblings about its flagship siblings, the P20 and P20 Lite. Make sure to swing by our rumor round-up to get caught up on everything about the two devices ahead of Huawei's event in Paris.

Streamza: Finally a Safe Way to Torrent Files

Downloading torrents is a great way to get hold of almost any media. There are millions of movies, tv shows, and music files online just waiting for you to come get them. Unfortunately they're in a minefield of viruses and shady sites. Streamza offers you a solution, and today we're spotlighting some great deals on its service.

Streamza is essentially a safe and speedy way to torrent files. It's a cloud based program which also stores all of your torrented files in a personal online library, so no space is taken up on your computer. Naturally this also means you can access your files from any device with an internet connection. Handy.

There are other perks of torrenting to an online library too. For instance, your IP address remains hidden because it's the Streamza server downloading the files, not your computer. The extra bandwidth of the Streamza server also means that files are downloaded a lot faster than with a torrent client.

Your IP address remains hidden

Streamza has its own huge library of songs and videos for you to peruse at your leisure. It's updated hourly, and as part of the Streamza community you can connect with other users to hear which latest release is causing a stir.

What got the AAPicks deal alarm clanging is that right now there's a massive price drop on lifetime subscriptions to Streamza. For a one-off payment you can torrent to your heart's content. How much you pay depends on how much cloud space you're after, but there are savings of more than 90% on 200GB, 500G or unlimited subscriptions. The 200GB offer will set you back just $39.99.

The clock's ticking on these deals, so if Streamza would make your life easier then don't delay. Check out all the offers by hitting the button below.

New Fitbit smartwatch might be Fitbit Blaze 2

fitbit blaze 2 leak Wareable

  • Leaked images of a new smartwatch from Fitbit depict a stylish device, smaller and more colorful than the Fitbit Ionic.
  • During a call with investors, Fitbit claimed the upcoming smartwatch would have "mass appeal" and designed with female consumers in mind.
  • Pricing and release date are not known, but the source of the images claims to know some software and hardware specs.

On Monday, smart wearable manufacturer Fitbit had a conference call with investors in which it hinted that the company would release a new smartwatch with "mass appeal" sometime this year. Now, less than 48 hours later, we have images that reportedly show the new device. Could it be the Fitbit Blaze 2?

During the investor call, Fitbit did have disappointing news about the Fitbit Ionic, namely that it is underperforming as far as sales go. With that in mind, a lot will be riding on this new smartwatch, whatever it might be called.

From the photos, the upcoming smartwatch appears to be smaller than the Ionic, which would line up with Fitbit's reported desire to market more to the female consumer. The new watch also comes in many different colors, both the band and along the face of the watch itself. It looks like the watch comes in black, silver, gray, and rose gold face options, with all sorts of different band colors and textures.

With a smaller form factor and plenty of color options, it appears this watch is the "mass appeal" concept the company is going for.

Other than what the watch looks like, we don't know too much else about it. We heard rumors last year that Fitbit was working on a new entry in the Blaze line, so this watch being branded as the Blaze 2 would make sense. However, if the Ionic is not doing so well, the company might want to rebrand the latest product entirely to shake off that bad mojo.

The new watch won't stray too far from the Ionic in one respect, and that's software. The new smartwatch will run the same Fitbit OS that first appeared in the Ionic, although it may be completely reworked as part of the company's new strategy. At this point, we can only guess.

Wareable, the site that leaked the images in this article, says that the new watch will be water resistant up to 50 meters (164 feet), have SpO2 sensors to detect sleep apnea, and won't come with a built-in GPS. The site also says the smartwatch will come at a lower price point than the Ionic, which listed at $300. However, none of this is truly confirmed until Fitbit officially announces the device sometime this spring.

What do you think? Are you in the market for a new smartwatch?

Lenovo teases Motorola Razr comeback… again

WhatMobile

  • Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing hinted at MWC 2018 that the Motorola Razr series could make a comeback.
  • The devices may feature a foldable display, suggested Yang.
  • The comments follow a similar statement the CEO made at MWC 2017.

Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing has hinted that the Motorola Razr series could make a comeback. Yang made the comments during an interview at the MWC 2018 trade show in Barcelona (via TechRadar) following a similar statement made at MWC 2017.

"With the new technology, particularly foldable screens, I think you will see more and more innovation on our smartphone design," Yang said.

Editor's Pick

"So hopefully what you just described [the Motorola Razr brand] will be developed or realized very soon."

Yang was responding to questions regarding a potential return for the Motorola Razr design. Lenovo has owned Motorola since 2014.

The Motorola Razr is a fondly remember clamshell (flip) phone series that became popular in the mid-2000s. The V3 model (similar to the V3i picture above) is one of the biggest selling clamshell phones of all time with 130 million sales. The rise of touchscreen devices towards the end of the decade contributed to the line's eventual demise.

The Razr lineup was the subject of a Lenovo promo video released in 2016 (above) too, so this may be turning into a "Half-Life 3"-type scenario. However, Lenovo may have more reason to pursue the Razr now than it did a year ago.

HMD Global, which stormed to the number six smartphone vendor post after just one year in the market (ahead of Lenovo), has rebooted the classic Nokia 8110 and Nokia 3310 in the past twelve months. Though we don't know what their sales look like, it seems to have helped the company from a marketing perspective—the devices have received plenty of media coverage that similar (probably better) feature phones have not, all thanks to their history.

The upcoming launch of foldable smartphones could make a Razr brand revival an even more tantalizing prospect, as it complements the original lineup's core design. Imagine a new Razr with premium specs and foldable touchscreen display? Sounds all right to me.

Where do you stand on the prospect of a Motorola Razr revival? Hit me up in the comments with your thoughts.
