Mystery Huawei phone with four cameras hits TENAA, possibly the Mate 20 Lite?

  • A new phablet has appeared on China's TENAA website, potentially the Mate 20 Lite.
  • The device packs four cameras, 6GB of RAM, and what could be a Kirin 710 processor.
  • Huawei usually launches its Mate devices a while after the IFA trade show, so don't expect a reveal just yet.

The Huawei Mate leak season is in full swing now, as the Mate 20 series nears its official reveal. The leak train continues this week, as China's TENAA authority has published a listing for what could be the Mate 20 Lite.

The mystery device certainly seems like a Mate 20 Lite based on the specs, featuring a 6.3-inch 2,340 x 1,080 LCD screen and a 3,650mAh battery. By comparison, last year's Mate 10 Lite offered a 6-inch full HD+ display and a 3,340mAh battery.

Other core specs include an unnamed 2.2Ghz octa-core processor, 6GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, and two dual camera setups (20MP+2MP on the rear, 24MP+2MP on the front). The four camera combination lines up well with the Mate 10 Lite, which had a 16MP+2MP rear pairing and a 13MP+2MP selfie setup.

A big improvement over Mate 10 Lite?

The processor's clock speed suggests we're looking at a new Kirin 710 chipset, as its heavyweight CPU cores top out at 2.2Ghz. Meanwhile, the 6GB of RAM figure seems a little excessive for a Lite model, but we have seen several mid-range devices launch with this much memory, such as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro and Moto G6 Plus.

Editor's Pick

Nevertheless, if the device does indeed ship with the Kirin 710 and 6GB of RAM, it'll make for a big power leap on paper over its predecessor. The new chipset, in particular, brings powerful CPU cores to budget Huawei phones for the first time. The Kirin 65x series, used in most budget Huawei phones, sticks to weaker, but power-efficient CPU cores only. So users should expect snappier performance and faster loading (in theory).

In any case, other listed features include Android 8.1, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a rear fingerprint scanner.

If you're hoping for something a little more impressive, then the Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro might be for you instead. According to a dissection of firmware files by XDA-Developers, the phones will share a Kirin 980 processor, while the Mate 20 Pro might have an in-display fingerprint scanner.

We're not expecting the Mate 20 series to be unveiled at IFA, as the company traditionally launches the Mate range in October/November instead. Nevertheless, we might see the Kirin 980 chipset revealed at the Berlin event in early September.
