The top Apple news stories of the past week:
- Kuo says there will be two 5G iPhones in 2020: According to Ming-Chi Kuo — a noted industry analyst who usually has spot-on predictions for Apple news — there will be three 2020 iPhones and two of them will be 5G-capable. Kuo says there will be a 6.1-inch iPhone that will only be 4G-capable, which is likely the iPhone XR of 2020. All of the iPhones, though, will apparently have OLED panels.
- Don't live near an Apple Store? Best Buy can fix your Apple products: In a new partnership, Best Buy stores around the country are now certified to fix Apple products. There are almost 1,000 Best Buys in the nation.
- Apple supplier Japan Display is in trouble: One of the biggest backers for the bailout of Japan Display has withdrawn its support. This puts the display panel supplier's future in serious doubt which is bad news for Apple, as JD supplies Apple with iPhone and Apple Watch displays.
- Samsung wants Apple to pay up for OLED panels: When Apple started using OLED panels in its iPhones, it agreed to buy a certain amount from Samsung. Flagging iPhone sales mean those quotas aren't being met, and now Samsung wants Apple to pay up.
- Apple might move a lot of its production out of China: Speaking of problems with suppliers, Apple is reportedly mulling over moving up to 30 percent of its manufacturing out of China in an effort to diversify its portfolio. The move, if true, would likely be a response to U.S. tariffs on China.
- The sparse Apple Stores will get a little more information: When you visit an Apple Store for the first time, you might be bewildered by the fact that no products have any information labels with them. To find out more, you need to ask for assistance. This could change soon as Apple is testing information cards to give buyers much-needed info without having to talk with an associate. See the photo at the top of this article for an example.
- Own a 2015 MacBook with a 15-inch display? Apple is recalling it: Due to battery problems that could cause the laptop to, you know, explode, Apple is recalling certain 2015 MacBook Pros with a 15-inch Retina display. If you own one of these laptops, you should definitely read this post from Apple.
- Apple is betting big on small movies: According to The New York Post, Apple is investing millions in small-budget movies to help beef up its Apple TV Plus streaming service. Reportedly, Apple is investing in movies that are relatively cheap to produce but will likely earn Oscar buzz.
