We're not quite at the point where front-facing cameras sit under our smartphone displays, but we're close. Until then, we're in this awkward middle stage where manufacturers are experimenting with pop-up selfie cameras, motorized cameras that flip from back to front, or even manual slider phones.
I must say, I'm still a fan of the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3's "sandwich slider" mechanism. It's not motorized, but the gesture to slide the display downwards to reveal the front-facing camera seems pretty natural. But if I were to pick a motorized option, I'd have to go with the Asus Zenfone 6 — that flip camera looks cool, but I could see why people wouldn't want a big camera moving around every time they want to take a selfie.
Then we have the two that started it all: the Vivo Nex and Oppo Find X. While the Vivo Nex's tiny pop-up camera has made its way to other devices like the OnePlus 7 Pro, the Oppo Find X is still the only smartphone to sport a big slide-out mechanism that extends the whole top edge of the phone.
