Everything you need to know about the Clash Royale League

Clash Royale League Supercell

  • Supercell is attempting to solidify the esports presence of their hit game Clash Royale by launching the Clash Royale League (CRL) with more than $1 million in prizes.
  • 36 esports organizations have signed up for the league, including big names like TSM, C9, FNATIC, Team Liquid, and others.
  • Two Asian leagues are already underway, with European and North American leagues set to start this Fall.

The esports scene has exploded in recent years, with some estimates saying it will be a $1.5 billion industry by 2020. Clash Royale developer Supercell has decided to get a piece of the pie by launching the Clash Royale League, an official competitive league for their most popular mobile game.

Editor's Pick

This isn't Supercell's first foray into the world of esports, having hosted several Clash Royale tournaments over the years. The largest by far was last year's Clash Royale Crown Championship (CRCC) World Finals in London, with more than 27 million players worldwide participating. The grand prize of $150,000 went to Sergio Ramos, a young player from Mexico. It was the largest prize ever for a mobile gaming tournament.

But Supercell has upped the ante for the Clash Royale League, which will feature more than $1 million in prizes for players around the globe. This time, rather than players competing individually, they will have to work together as part of a team. Many of the current pro players (including Sergio Ramos) were already signed to various gaming orgs, but the teams will consist of 4 to 6 players.

The Clash Royale League will feature more than $1 million in prizes

In order to find more players to fill out the Clash Royale League rosters, Supercell launched the Clash Royale League Challenge mid-March 2018. In it, players had to win 20 matches against the best players in the world, as well as meet some other qualifications like age, maturity, and ability to travel.

More than 6,700 players managed to overcome this challenge, and although not all of them will find a team, they represent a large base from which teams can draft players for Clash Royale League. There are currently four confirmed regions for the league: China, (the rest of) Asia, North America, and Europe. Each region features eight teams, and many of the largest esports organizations in the world have signed on.

In North America, that includes Team Solo Mid, Cloud 9, 100 Thieves, and Counter Logic Gaming among others. In Europe, FNATIC, Team Liquid, SK Gaming, and five others have jumped on board. These two regions will kick off in August, and the two Asian leagues started in late March. The best teams from each region will meet some time in Winter 2018 for the grand finals.

Hints from the Clash Royale League China

It's not yet clear how exactly Clash Royale's arena style gameplay will lend itself to team play, nor if each region will follow the same format. However, since the two Asian Clash Royale League competitions have already finished their inaugural regular seasons, it's likely that the other two will follow their example. The format for the Clash Royale League China is as follows:

Two teams of three face off in 3-5 sets of games. The first team to take 3 sets wins. In each set, both sides get to ban a single card.

  • Set 1: 1v1 Bo3
  • Set 2: 2v2 Bo3, excluding the players from set 1
  • Set 3: 1v1 Bo3, excluding the players from set 1
  • Set 4: 1v1 Bo3, excluding the players from sets 1 and 3
  • Set 5: KOF

KOF is a kind of king of the hill format where two players face off in a Bo1, and the victor stays on to play against the next player of the opposing team. The first team to run out of players loses.

This format keeps the matches from getting stale, and can lead to some pretty exciting games with reverse sweeps and all-kill finales. It's unclear if other regions will adopt this format for the Fall season, nor if more Clash Royale League regions will be announced for South America, Central America, or any others currently left out.

More information about Clash Royale League will come in the next few months as teams fill out their rosters. But with so much money from well known esports organizations, it might just be time for mobile gaming to get a seat at the big boys table.
