Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 leaked in hands-on photo, shows off 18:9 display and key specs

The follow-up to Xiaomi's record-breaking Redmi Note 4 has been spotted in the wild. The leaked photo (below) first appeared on Weibo and shows off the Redmi Note 5's fresh new 18:9 display as well as a whole bunch of key specs.

The biggest step-up we can see from the Redmi Note 4, from a design perspective at least, is the near bezel-less display.

After bringing the bezel-less form factor to the fore with the Mi MIX range, it's not a huge surprise to see the Chinese OEM following suit for its mid-tier phones. A recent TENAA listing suggests we're looking at a 5.99-inch screen with a resolution of 2,160 x 1,080 pixels.

That's not all we can glean from the photo, however, as the taker was nice enough to take a shot of the phone's specification settings screen. According to a translation (thanks, GSMArena), Xiaomi is sticking with the same processor found in the Redmi Note 4 and the Mi A1, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 625.

While it seems strange that Xiaomi wouldn't opt for the more recent Snapdragon 630, the existing chipset, alongside what looks to be a huge 4,000 mAh battery, should be a winning combo in terms of power efficiency and cost to the end-user.

In addition, the image appears to confirm a 12 MP rear camera sensor, 64 GB of storage, and Xiaomi's MIUI 9 skin running over Android Nougat (version 7.1.2).

It shouldn't be too long until Xiaomi officially unveils its latest budget phablet and when it does it'll be interesting to see what price point the company settles on. It's no secret that the Redmi Note 4's astonishing success, particularly in India, comes down to its killer price-performance ratio, and Xiaomi will want to maintain the sales momentum of its top-selling phone family.
