- A new leak alleges that multiple gaming phone brands will offer 100W charging in Q1 2021.
- The tipster notes that these phones will offer the Snapdragon 875 chipset too.
- Xiaomi and Vivo have both tested 100W+ charging in the last year or two.
We've seen brands demonstrate 100W and 120W charging in recent years, and the new USB 4 standard also offers support for the former. Now, a new leak suggests that 100W charging will indeed be a commercial reality next year.
Frequent leaker Digital Chat Station reported on Weibo (via machine translation) that three out of four gaming phone manufacturers in China are "testing and promoting the commercialization" of 100W charging technology.
Furthermore, the tipster says this will be the main selling point of gaming phones released in Q1 2021, along with the expected Snapdragon 875 chipset.
The leaker notes that three out of four gaming phone brands in China are working on the tech. We're guessing this means Asus (although they're Taiwanese), Honor (Play), Xiaomi (Black Shark), Nubia (Red Magic), and/or Vivo (Iqoo).
Furthermore, both Xiaomi and Vivo have demonstrated ultra-fast charging before, with Xiaomi showing off 100W charging and Vivo touting 120W top-ups.
However, Xiaomi has also elaborated on several hurdles facing the tech right now, with battery degradation, safety, and several other factors at play. So we hope manufacturers solve these issues before adopting 100W charging solutions.
