The best horror movies on Amazon Prime Video

Editor's note: We will update this list of the best horror movies on Amazon Prime regularly as new movies arrive on the subscription or we simply find something better.

1. Hereditary (2018)

Hereditary

Annie Graham's 78-year-old mother, Ellen Taper Leigh, is dead. After her funeral, strange things begin to happen to Annie and her family, as Ellen's secrets unravel around them. Reality and nightmares seem to blend for the grief-stricken family, as one tragedy follows another.

Hereditary is Ari Aster's directorial debut and it is as masterfully directed and paced as one of Annie's miniatures. Toni Collette's performance as Annie, on the other hand, is one of the best of her career. The film will fill you with terror and make you pay attention to its every frame. It's already a modern horror classic and without a doubt one of the best horror movies on Amazon Prime.

2. A Quiet Place (2018)

A Quiet Place HuluIMDB

In the world of A Quiet Place silence is survival. The planet has been ravished by blind alien creatures who attack anything that makes a sound. In this nightmarish future, a family of five are trying their best to survive. They communicate in sign language during their scavenging trips and have so far managed to avoid danger. But Evelyn, played by Emily Blunt, is pregnant, and giving birth is not a quiet affair.

A Quiet Place is a directorial triumph for John Krasinski. It immerses you in its world and fills you with a sense of dread. It executes its premise masterfully. If you haven't seen A Quiet Place yet, do yourself a favor and watch it on Amazon Prime Video today. It's one of the best — if not the best — horror films in the platform's catalogue.

3. Suspiria (2018)

Suspiria

Inspired by the 1977 Italian film of the same name, Suspiria is more of a reimagining than a remake of the horror classic. It sees Susie Bannion, a young American, audition to be part of prestigious dance group in West Berlin. As she studies there, sinister things begin to happen to those around her. One of the dance students disappears after confiding to her therapist that her teachers are involved in the occult.

Suspiria's unique blend of violence, dance and hypnotic visuals make it seem like you're watching a forbidden ancient ritual. It's both enthralling and unnerving, thanks to Luca Guadagnino's excellent direction. Some critics might pan it as pretentious, but it is one of the best horror movies of recent years, nonetheless.

4. Nosferatu (1922)

Nosferatu

Before Dracula was cemented in popular consciousness as a gentleman with sleek hair and a flowing cape, he was Count Orlok — a mysterious, monstrous vampire.

Nosferatu is the first (although unofficial) silver screen adaptation of Dracula. It is a 1922 silent film and one of the few movies from this age to survive to present day. Because the filmmakers never acquired the rights to Bram Stoker's novel, there are some significant differences in the plot and characters. However, this is to the movie's benefit, not detriment. It is unpredictable, tense, and eerie. Even if you find silent films hard to sit through, Nosferatu demands your attention with its creepy visuals and dancing shadows. It is a classic, which every horror fan should watch at least once.

5. Rosemary's Baby (1968)

rosemarys baby

Moving to the big city is always stressful, but Rosemary is struggling more than expected when she arrives to the Big Apple with husband Guy. She is surrounded by strange nosy neighbors and the chaos and noise of the city. However, as sinister events start to take place, all her concerns seem to be dismissed by her husband and her doctor.

Rosemary's Baby taps into real fears of its era — urban living and the occult — but also universal ones like loss of control, loss of agency over one's body, and pregnancy itself. Mia Farrow masterfully portrays Rosemary's descent into paranoia. The direction and cinematography are purposefully claustrophobic, making Rosemary's Baby disturbing without relying on scary visuals. It's horror realism at its finest and one of the best horror movies on Amazon Prime Video.

6. Carrie (1976)

No best horror film list would be complete without a Stephen King movie. Although many early adaptations of his works have been duds, this is not the case with the original 1976 Carrie. The film follows the titular protagonist as she struggles both at school and at home — either bullied by cruel classmates or by her fanatical mother. After enduring constant torment, all it takes is one horrifying prank to push Carrie over the edge.

Carrie is an iconic horror movie that has made its mark on pop culture in too many ways to count. It's disturbing and has its own bizarre, unique style. Don't waste your time with the remake and watch one of the best horror films currently available on Amazon Prime.

7. Hellraiser (1987)

Hellraiser movies

Hellraiser was a wickedly evil film for its time. It is based on The Hellbound Heart — a 1986 novella written by Clive Barker. Surprisingly, the author also wrote the screenplay and directed the film, breathing life into the Cenobites on the big screen. The plot revolves around a mysterious puzzle box, which summons the otherworldly creatures. They have forgotten the difference between pain and pleasure and are capable of horrifying things.

Hellraiser is a horror cult classic. In a decade when most horror villains were slashers, it offered something different, bizarre, and taboo. It might not have the same impact today as it did when it was released, but it is still one of the best horror movies you need to check out on Amazon Prime.

8. Paranormal Activity 2 (2010)

paranormal activity 2

Paranormal Activity is almost single handedly responsible for reviving the found footage horror genre. The first movie started with a measly $15,000 budget but it has since spawned a whole franchise. However, not all installments are made equal. Paranormal Activity 2 is a fan favorite and often considered better than the original. This prequel follows Kristi and Daniel, whose entire house gets turn upside down after a break-in. The family installs security cameras, which then capture terrifying supernatural occurrences.

The found footage style of Paranormal Activity 2 gives it a more realistic feel than many other horror films, making it a must watch whether you are a fan of the genre or not. It's a scary ride and one of the best horror films on Amazon Prime Video.

9. Child's Play (1988)

Child's Play

Child's Play is all about possession and revenge. It's a slasher flick laced with dark humor brought to "life" by Brad Dourif's excellent voice acting. Dourif's character, serial killer Charles Lee Ray, finds himself dying from gun wounds in a toy factory. Before Ray bites the bullet, he casts a voodoo spell on a children's doll to turn into a vessel for his soul, transforming the toy into a rage-fueled psychopath.

Child's Play is far from a cinematic masterpiece, but it is a cult classic. It's incredibly entertaining to watch, but it's probably not recommended for those that have a doll phobia. Nevertheless, it's still one of the best horror movies you can check out on Prime Video today.

10. Deathgasm

Deathgasm

After forming their metal band Deathgasm, outcasts Brodie and Zakk break into the house of metal star Rikki Daggers and steal sheet music labeled The Black Hymn. They return and perform the hymn with the band but stop when lights begin to flicker. They don't play the hymn again until after an altercation between Zakk and a few rivals. Seeking revenge, they want whatever dark power the hymn has to offer. But the plan backfires. The mysterious music has unleashed something evil.

Deathgasm is a horror comedy gore fest that will satisfy anything fan of the genre but might put off the squeamish. If you think you can handle it, however, it is one of the best (and funniest) horror flicks you can enjoy with your Prime subscription.

Honorable mentions

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes — Okay, this isn't really horror. It's stupid. Really stupid, but in a good way. It's one of those movies you need to experience at least once.

Mausoleum — A demon, a 300-year family curse, and a mausoleum tomb — What more could you ask for? Susan Walker has demonic issues passed over from her mother. The only remedy is to cram the demon back into the family mausoleum.

Killer Klowns from Outer Space — Here's another cheeseball movie you should watch at least once. Aliens come to earth to consume humans like food, only they appear as hideous clowns parked in a giant circus tent spaceship.

The Exorcist III — Though it's the third film in the series, this movie is based on William Peter Blatty's sequel novel to The Exorcist called Legion. It's set 17 years after the original novel and film.

Ju-On: The Grudge — the Japanese original which The Grudge is based on. Just as terrifying, if not more, this movie is a must watch for any fan of Japanese horror flicks.
