Fortnite update hub: V6.21 adds Balloons, glider re-deploy changes

Welcome to our Fortnite update tracker! We'll be collating all of the official Fortnite Battle Royale update/patch notes and breaking down all the new features added to Epic Games' phenomenon for Android and iOS phones and tablets, as well as PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch platforms.

Fortnite Battle Royale version 6.21 update overview

Release date: November 1, 2018

Fortnite update 6.21 is the last update before the Fortnitemares event comes to an end of November 4, so now is the time to get completing those challenges! The latest update also adds Balloons as a new item which let you float around the map. Elsewhere, there are tweaks to the controversial re-deploy glider mechanic, which, according to Epic, isn't going anywhere despite a significant backlash from some fans. Playground

Bug Fixes

  • Updated Port-A-Challenge grenade names.
  • Improved clarity of where to throw Port-A-Challenge grenades.

Weapons and Items

Balloons added

  • Epic rarity
    • Comes with 20 deployable balloons.
      • Allows the player to defy gravity by holding up to 6 balloons at a time.
      • Primary fire button to inflate a balloon, secondary fire button to let go of a balloon.
    • Can be found from floor loot, chests, Supply Drops, Supply Llamas, and Vending Machines.
    • NOTE: Don't float too high for too long, balloons only last so long at max build height.

Grappler

  • When grappling as a vehicle passenger, the velocity of your vehicle is factored into the grapple force.
    • Only occurs in instances where vehicle velocity will be a net gain to grapple force.
  • Grappling as a vehicle passenger will now cause the vehicle to travel in a straight line to its destination rather than traveling in an arc.

Vaulted

  • Semi-Auto Sniper
  • Guided Missile
  • Dual Pistols
    • These items will remain available in Playground Mode.
  • 25% of explosive damage will now penetrate through structures and the environment.

Gameplay

Glider Re-deploy

We've finished our first week of Glider Re-deploy being available in all modes. During this time we've been collecting internal data and monitoring constructive feedback from all of you. We understand that not all players agree with this change, but we would like to continue with this functionality in the game based on the positive results we've been seeing.

As this feature remains available, we'll begin making quality of life changes to its functionality. First of which will be prioritizing Glider audio over weapon audio within certain ranges, this will begin in v6.21. We also plan on adding additional changes in future updates.

Thanks for the discussion and feedback you've provided. Please continue letting us know how we can improve this feature, your thoughts on its effect in matches, and any other feedback you may have as we continue to work on Glider Re-deploy.

Additional Gameplay Changes

  • Grass updates more frequently resulting in smoother animation.
  • Added support for Nintendo Switch Pro Controller and newer versions of PS4 and Xbox One controllers on Mac

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed an issue where picking up a trap could cause a hitch.
  • Certain bindings will no longer override the ability to use the fullscreen map and spectating actions.
  • Fixed the delay between using multiple Small Shields.
  • Fixed an issue where inventory could get stuck when using the Grappler while picking up an item.
  • Map zooming with trigger buttons works on Switch again.

Audio

  • Intensified Fiend Hunter Crossbow fire sounds.
  • Reduced volume of Cube Monsters and dynamic spawners.
  • It's now easier to hear gliders while shooting or harvesting.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed sniper projectiles playing the wrong impact sounds when hitting Cube Monsters.
  • Fixed Boogie Bomb music not playing for Cube Monsters.

Replay System

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed a bug causing Quad Launcher rocket explosions to reset when scrubbing replays.

Mobile

  • Optimization to reduce hitching on Android phones using Vulkan.
  • Snap-to-value slider added to the HUD Layout tool.

Bug Fixes

  • Widgets that should not have had editable visibility shown will now be properly hidden.

Fortnite Battle Royale version 6.20 update overview

Release date: October 24, 2018

In the spirit of Halloween, Fortnite update v6.20 adds a spooky flavor with the superbly named Fortnitemares Limited Time Event. That's not all though as there are plenty of Season 6 additions, as well as huge changes to the overall Battle Royale experience. This includes wholesale changes to storm phase times and the ability to redeploy your glider, effectively removing fall damage from a certain height. Fortnite Battle Royale version 6.20 update patch notes

Limited Time Event: Fortnitemares

Summary

The Cube strikes back, bringing Fortnitemares to Battle Royale! Drop in and discover what the Cube has unleashed.

What's New?

  • Cube Fragments spawn Cube Monsters! Drop in and discover the different types.
    • Large Cube Fragments are found near corrupted areas of the island.
    • Small Cube Fragments are created randomly throughout the match.
  • Cube Fiends, Brutes, and Fragments all have a chance to drop loot.
  • Defeating a Cube Fiend or Brute will grant a small amount of shield.
    • Eliminating a Cube Fiend will grant +3 shield
    • Eliminating an Elite Cube Fiend will grant +5 shield
    • Eliminating a Cube Brute will grant +10 shield
    • Eliminating an Elite Cube Brute will grant +15 shield
    • Eliminating a Mega Cube Brute will grant +20 shield
  • Fiend Hunter Crossbow added. Fortnitemare Limited time weapon.
    • Available in Epic variant.
      • 40 base damage
      • 1.8 shots per second.  
      • 4x damage against Fiends
    • Seven Arrow magazine size, unlimited ammo.
    • Can be found from floor loot, chests and Vending Machines.

Playground

New Port-A grenades are now available in Vending Machines at the southern edge of Loot Lake. The Port-A-Challenge set includes the Building Challenge, Obstacle Course, and Firing Range minigames. There's four of each type with varying difficulty.

The Spiky Stadium makes a return with a brand new respawn system and Vending Machines to provide all the necessary grenades. Finally, there's the Port-A-Pirateship mini-game. This grenade spawns a re-creation of the minigame shown off by SXVXN!

Port-A-Challenge

  • Obstacle Course
    • Collect the tokens and avoid the obstacles while honing your building skills.
  • Building Challenge
    • Build the structure as fast as possible.
  • Firing Range
    • Take out as many dummies as you can within the time limit.
  • Spiky Stadium v2
    • Once inside the new Spiky Stadium, players will respawn at designated spawn points inside the playspace.
    • Vending machines provide grenades and Traps to allow you to customize your play.
  • Port-A-Pirateship
    • A re-creation of the minigame shown off by SXVXN.
    • Spawns two large wooden Pirate ships.
    • The minigame will split players into two teams, with the goal of destroying the other team's ship.
  • Port-A-Pirateship Ironclad Edition
    • Spawns two large metal Pirate ships.
    • Grenades and Rockets are provided for maximum destruction
  • New Vending Machines have been added across the map to provide more Traps and weapons.
  • A new respawn button has been added to the in-game player menu.

Weapons and Items

Six Shooter added

  • Available in Uncommon, Rare and Epic variants.
    • 34 / 36 / 38 base damage.
    • Shoot from the hip for faster fire rate, or trade rate of fire for precision by aiming down the sight
  • Uses Medium Ammo.
  • Can be found from floor loot, chests and Vending Machines. 

The Rocket Launcher is now the Pumpkin Rocket Launcher

  • This is a visual only change.

Hand Cannon balance changes

  • Increased damage to structures.
    • Epic – From 79 to 150
    • Legendary – From 83 to 157
  • Increased minimum long-range body shot damage.
    • Epic – From 30 to 50
    • Legendary – From 31 to 52
  • Increased minimum long-range head shot damage.
    • Epic – From 60 to 100
    • Legendary – From 62 to 104

Stink Bomb 

  • Increased chance to find from floor loot from 0.27% to 0.47%
  • Increased chance to find from Chests from 2.37% to 4.08%

Misc

  • Increased the chance of getting an explosive weapon from Chests from 3.06% to 3.35%
    • Decreased the chance of getting a Grenade Launcher from 1.35% to 0.91%
    • Increased the chance of getting a Rocket Launcher from 0.83% to 1.12%

Gameplay

Glider

  • The Glider Redeploy functionality that's available in the Soaring Limited Time Modes can now be used in all game modes. Help us test this feature and let us know what you think.
    • When in mid-air and greater than 10m up, press Jump to deploy your glider.

Storm Changes

  • Wait time for phase 3 has been reduced from 120 seconds to 90 seconds.
  • Wait time for phase 5 has been reduced from 70 seconds to 50 seconds.
  • Late game moving circles will now immediately begin traveling to a new location after it reaches its current destination.
  • Storm's maximum damage has been reduced from 10 to 8.
  • The final circle now moves and shrinks at the same time.

Misc

  • Weapons now reload upon respawn in modes that keep the player's inventory.
  • Players will now take 2 damage per second while in the Down But Not Out state instead of 2 damage every 2 seconds.
    • Maximum time in the DBNO state reduced from 100 seconds to 50 seconds if no friendly player attempts to revive you.

Bug Fixes

  • Removing ability to rocket ride Quad Launcher rockets.
    • Fixes streaming issues on low-end iOS devices.

Audio

  • Added unique sounds when cycling through Traps.
  • Removed the in-air audio cue for Gliders that belong to friendly teammates.
  • Reduced volume of Dark Viking glider.

UI

  • Your name now always appears at the top of your squad list in-game.

Bug Fixes

  • When a Challenge bundle is delayed, it will now display as "Coming Soon" rather than "Unlocking in 0 seconds."
  • Chain quests in the Challenge bundles now show the current quest number in the chain over the total number of quests in the chain.
    • Example: 1/2, 2/3, etc.

Art and Animation

  • New variants added to the Musha and Hime Outfits that are part of the Bushido set.
    • No Challenges are needed to unlock these variants. If you own the Outfits they will be automatically unlocked.

Bug Fixes

  • Pets no longer get stuck floating in the air after their owner drives a vehicle off a jump.
  • Fixed Quadcrasher Jump Trick animation displays.
  • Changes in other players' aim and view directions are now smoother, both in-game and during replays.

Mobile

  • Better handling of larger memory Android devices (6 GB+)
  • Custom HUD Layout users can now toggle the visibility of buttons across Combat/Build modes.
    • Red – Hidden
    • Green – Visible
    • Blue – Does not affect visibility
    • Buttons will only be shown when they are relevant to the player, even when set to "visible".
      • Example: Buttons shown while holding a weapon will only be shown on screen while a weapon is being held.
  • The Combat/Build quickbar is now resizeable within Custom HUD Layout.
    • This includes extra buttons.
  • Players can now edit structures while in combat mode while holding any weapon.

Bug Fixes

  • The first weapon picked now properly equips automatically.

Fortnite Battle Royale version 6.10 update overview

Release date: October 16, 2018

Fortnite Battle Royale update 6.10 adds another vehicle to the game, the ridiculously fun Quadcrasher, as well as a new Events tab which brings support for online tournaments, and a host of tweaks to the mobile experience. The latter includes a "major" performance boost for compatible phones running Android Nougat or earlier. On the less positive side, the patch also removes the Port-a-Fortress item due to a number of bugs. Check out the full Fortnite 6.10 patch notes below!

Fortnite Battle Royale version 6.01 update patch notes

Limited Time Mode: Disco Domination

Summary

It's time for the ultimate dance-off. Dance Floors have spawned around the Battle Royale island. Take them over by clearing out any enemies and then dancing to raise a disco ball up from the floor. The team that fills their meter the fastest by capturing and defending the dance floors will win the match!

What's New?

  • Reduced all bandage spawns by 50%.
  • Removed all Common weapons.
  • increased the variability of where you can spawn by 30% along your sides storm circle.
  • Brought in the side dance floors closer to the Storm edge.
  • Reduced max respawn distance by 20%.

Weapons and Items

  • The Port-a-Fortress has been disabled as we work to resolve some issues related to this item.
    • Drop rate for Port-a-Fort increased from 3.05% to 4.89% while Port-a-Fortress is disabled.
      • The goal is to keep the drop rate of Port-a-Fort the same as if both items were enabled to help with the completion of Challenges.

Bug Fixes

  • Guided Missile no longer fires the wrong direction
  • Players will no longer permanently attach to a Supply Drop when grappling to it.
  • Attempting to fire while reloading the Double Barrel Shotgun will no longer interrupt the animation.
  • Weapon equip animations no longer skip when simultaneously attempting to sprint and target.

Gameplay

Quadcrasher

  • Seats two players.
  • You build boost just by driving. Unleash that speed with the hotkey once you've filled your boost meter.
  • Smash through buildings while boosting.
  • Boost off ramps or cliffs to catch sick air.
  • Launch players into the air by smashing into them.

Other

  • You can now view and change Edit Controls separately from Combat and Build Controls in the controller menu.
  • PS4 controller lighting will match player marker color.
  • You can now set building mode sensitivity for controllers in the options menu. It is a multiplier on the default controller sensitivity and allows up to a 2x increase.
  • Controller sensitivity slider in the options menu now allows for more than 10 values.
  • Added an option to Builder Pro that allows for building as soon as you switch to the piece, instead of selecting first and then placing. This allows for faster building without a preview.
  • Added an option that allows for edit hold timing to be adjusted.
  • Opening the Emote Picker with a controller will happen when the button is released, while holding the button will replay the emote that was last played.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed inconsistencies with the damage trap not triggering properly.
  • Allow slight movement when using a consumable with Sprint by Default enabled. This will help match how it works without Sprint by Default enabled
  • Fixed problem with character orientation getting stuck after falling off the island in a vehicle.
  • Glider Redeploy now functions properly in game modes that support this feature.
    • This will solve the issue that was causing the deploy prompt to not appear as well as preventing players from deploying their glider when jumping from a sufficient height.

Events

  • Tournaments can be found inside of the new 'Events' tab available in game.  This tab will host a variety of online competitions which are open to everyone.  Jump in and explore!
    • Each tournament has a series of scheduled dates and times that the competition will be run. A carousel of all upcoming competitions and times will be available for browsing, so you can plan and practice.
    • Every scheduled session is a completely clean slate with all players starting on an equal footing at the beginning of play.
    • Compete over the course of several hours to earn points by eliminating multiple opponents or surviving against the competition.
    • Players are matched against opponents with similar scores during the session.
    • Score enough points during any scheduled event session and you'll earn a golden pin for that tournament!

Performance

  • Weapon replication optimization for dedicated server to reduce load during rapid weapon switching.
  • We've made CPU performance optimizations on Switch across all threads. This results in a smoother gameplay experience and fewer hitches.  
  • Improve multi-threading during heavy physics simulation.

Audio

  • Celebrate with style. The music selected in your Locker will now play after getting a Victory Royale!
  • Remove the Doppler effect from the audio when players are gliding.
  • Added an in-air loop to Grenade Launcher projectiles so you can spatialize where they're coming from.
  • Improved Grenade Launcher bouncing audio.
  • Reduced volume of medium-range Grenade explosion sound.

Bug Fixes

  • Cube ambient sounds no longer randomly play in the middle of matches.
  • Sequential explosion sounds no longer interrupt each other.
  • Added missing audio to the Compact SMG and SMG medium/distant fire sounds.
  • Audio 'pops' no longer occur when emote music loops.
  • Re-added the audio cue that plays before a new wave of Supply Drops start appearing.

UI

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed some touch issues for the controller mapping screen on Switch.
  • Fixed a bug where the player's banner in the top bar would not update when changing the banner in the locker.
  • Made the reticle hidden when skydiving.
  • Fixed issues with the display of the on-screen map and inventory inputs.
  • Fixed issues with touch functionality on the map for the Nintendo Switch
  • Resource buttons no longer cancel auto-run.

Art and Animation

Bug Fixes

  • Cosmetic items that change in some way over the course of a match are now marked as "Reactive" in-game (e.g., a harvesting tool that changes as you get eliminations).
  • Fixed visual display issues with cosmetic music items..
  • Animation pops no longer occur while in the air after using the Chiller trap.

Replay system

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed an issue causing the first replay not be selected in the replay browser.
  • Fixed the nameplate distance slider not working.
  • Fixed an issue where firing guided missiles would start with the camera facing the wrong way in replays.

Mobile

  • Major performance improvement for devices running Android 7 or earlier.
  • Memory improvements on iOS devices.
  • The first weapon you pick up will now auto-equip itself on mobile.
  • Touch control input now has smoothing enabled.
  • Tapping selected buttons on the build quickbar will once again build the selected build piece.
  • All elements in the Mobile HUD should now be placeable/movable in the HUD Layout Tool.
  • Updated visuals for independent Quickbar slots in the HUD Layout Tool.

Bug Fixes

  • Drag and dropping on the Quickbar will no longer select the thing you drag. Players can now adjust their inventory without interrupting other actions.
  • Fixing a bug causing some touch input to fall through the settings screen to gameplay.
  • Fixing edit button visibility issues when crouching on Mobile.

Fortnite Battle Royale version 6.02 update overview

Release date: October 10, 2018

It's party time! Fortnite update version 6.02 brings a new Limited Time Mode called Disco Domination to Battle Royale. As the name suggests, the mode sees teams of players battle for supremacy of Dance Floors located around the map. Clear the floor of enemies and raise your disco ball to capture the boogie-centric base and retain control to fill a meter before opposing teams.

There's also a new explosive weapon, the Quad Launcher, which is available in Rare or Legendary variants. For all the details on the changes to Battle Royale, check out the full patch notes below.

Fortnite Battle Royale version 6.01 update patch notes

Limited Time Mode: Disco Domination

Summary

It's time for the ultimate dance-off. Dance Floors have spawned around the Battle Royale island. Take them over by clearing out any enemies and then dancing to raise a disco ball up from the floor. The team that fills their meter the fastest by capturing and defending the dance floors will win the match!

Mode Details

  • Two teams battle it out!
  • Respawning will be turned on until the third (last) storm circle.
  • Five dance floors will appear on the map whenever the storm is not moving. 
  • Emoting on a dance floor when no enemies are present will raise a disco ball in the center of the floor, and capture it for your team.
    • The more friendly players dancing on a floor, the faster it will be captured. 
  • Once a floor is captured, it will begin filling the team's "dance bar" on the HUD, until either an enemy stands on it or the current storm timer ends and the storm begins to move. The first team to fill their dance bar to 100% will win the match.
  • The dance floors in the later stages of the match fill the bar more quickly, so don't give up if your team is behind!
  • It is not possible to build on or over the dance floors, but they can be protected by surrounding them with a fort.
  • Glider redeploy is activated in this mode, press jump while falling to use your glider.
  • This mode uses 50v50 levels of loot and resources.

Weapons and Items

Quad Launcher

  • Fire up to four lobbed rockets in quick succession. 
  • Available in Epic and Legendary variants. 
    • 80/84 base damage per rocket. 
    • 300 unit explosion radius. 
  • Can be found in chests, Supply Drops, and Vending Machines.

Port-a-Fortress 

  • The Port-a-Fortress has returned and can be looted in-game.
  • Port-a-Fortress availability lowered from 2.43% to 1.83%.

Loot drop rate adjustments

  • Decreased common Pistol drop chance from 5.8% to 5.47%
  • Increased Epic Bolt-Action Sniper Rifle drop chance from 0.33% to 0.42%
  • Decreased Rare Semi-Auto Sniper Rifle drop chance from 0.92% to 0.71%
  • Increased Epic Heavy Sniper Rifle drop chance from 0.33% to 0.4%
  • Increased Legendary Heavy Sniper Rifle drop chance from 0.07% to 0.13%
  • Decreased Rare Grenade Launcher drop chance from 1.45% to 0.99%
  • Increased Epic Rocket Launcher drop chance from 0.59% to 0.66%
  • Increased Legendary Rocket Launcher drop chance from 0.08% to 0.21%
  • Increased Epic Guided Missile drop chance from 0.11% to 0.2%
  • Increased Legendary Guided Missile drop chance from 0.03% to 0.05%
    • Note: The overall number of Explosive Weapons and Snipers in a given game has not changed, however, there is a greater distribution of rarity and variants.

Bug Fixes

  • Removed a change that was inadvertently introduced in v6.01 which caused Bonesy to bark more than was intended.
  • Fixed an issue that caused moving circles to be closer to the previous safezone than intended.

Performance

  • Fixed some hitches on Switch caused by blocking loads of UI data.
  • Increased the texture pool size on Xbox One, which should avoid some issues with blurry textures and improve rendering performance.

Art and Animation

  • Skull Trooper styles have a visual issue when viewing the Outfit from the Locker.
    • The Outfit still appears properly in-game.
    • This issue will be fixed next patch.

Limited Time Modes

Playground

  • Playground is still available in Fortnite update 6.01.
  • New settings: starting health, time of day, gravity, and more.

Weapons and Items

New Trap: Chiller

  • A new common rarity trap called the Chiller has been added.
  • Friends or foes who trigger the Chiller will be inflicted with icy feet, causing them to slide uncontrollably.
  • It can be placed on floors, walls, and ceilings.
  • Drops in stacks of 3.
  • Available from Treasure Chests, Supply Drops, Vending Machines, Supply Llamas, and floor loot.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed a bug causing players to lose control of vehicles.

Gameplay

  • Improved controls on the Switch.

Bug Fixes

  • Pets now disappear with the player model when the camera is close.
  • Fancy Tomato hit box increased to match visuals.

Audio

  • Glider audio now muffled if no clear line of sight between players.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed a bug causing incorrect audio to play when a teammate is eliminated.

UI

  • Traps now properly display star rarity ratings.

Fortnite Battle Royale version 6.00 update overview

Release date: September 27, 2018

Fortnite update 6.00 kicks off season 6 with a boo! It introduces pets, shadow stones, and a few spooky additions to the ever-changing map layout. Epic Games is taking advantage of the fact that Halloween occurs right in the middle of the season with a number of new Halloween-themed skins, items, and areas to explore. Plus, as always, a brand new Battle Pass with over 100 unique rewards to collect.

Fortnite Battle Royale version 6.00 update patch notes

Weapons and Items

  • Impulse Grenade, Suppressed Submachine Gun, Light Machine Gun, Bouncer, and Remote Explosives have been added to the vault.
  • Each item will remain available in Playground mode.

Shadow Stones

  • Shadow Stones can now be found floating around the corrupted areas of the map.
  • Consuming a Shadow Stone enters you into Shadow Form for 45 seconds.
    • While in Shadow Form, you cannot fire weapons, but become invisible while stationary.
    • You also move faster and become immune to fall damage.
    • Shadow Form grants the ability to Phase forward by pressing the primary fire button.
    • Phasing allows you to pass through walls.
    • Shadow Form can be ended early by holding alt fire.

Weapon Changes

  • Shooting a moving vehicle with a Grappler will now add that vehicle's momentum to your launch force.
  • Grapplers now have 10 charges, down from 15.
  • Double Barrel damage reduced slightly to 143 and 114, down from 150 and 120.
  • Dual Pistols now spawn outside of chests slightly less often.

Bug Fixes

  • Various issues caused by using a Grappler while in a vehicle or while using a launch pad.
  • Visual bugs resulting from Grappler use.
  • Heavy Sniper reload animation now matches timing of bullet reload.

Fortnite update Season 6 map changes

Map changes

Floating Island

  • The island in the middle of Loot Lake is now floating with the power of the purple cube.
  • Entering the vortex beneath the island will send you flying into the air.
  • Loot spawns and a few destructible objects spawn on the island.

Corrupted Areas

  • Several corrupted areas have appeared around the map.
  • Each area spawns Shadow Stones, a new item in Fortnite Season 6.

Corn Fields

  • Several spooky corn fields have spawned in the Fatal Fields.
  • Entering the corn fields reduces your visibility dramatically, so enter at your own risk.
  • Fields can be destroyed by swinging your ax like a horror movie villain.

Haunted Castle

  • A Haunted Castle can now be found at the top of the Haunted Hills.
  • Loot and chests spawn in and around the castle.

Gameplay

  • Starting with the fourth safe zone, the zone begins shrinking sooner but takes longer to finish shrinking.

Playground

We've introduced a new consumable to the Playground LTM that will allow you to spawn an entire Spiky Stadium. We were inspired by the amazing things you've been making within Playground, and cannot wait to see what you create as we continue to build out the future of creative mode in Fortnite.

Limited Time Item: Spiky Stadium

  • Present in Playground only, found in red Supply Drops (along with a ton of impulse grenades).
  • Builds a 7×11 sized stadium full of Damage Traps and Bouncers.

Port-a-Fortress

  • It's huge!
  • Builds instantly.
  • Includes built-in Bouncers for an easy exit.
  • Legendary Rarity.
  • Found in Vending Machines, chests, Supply Drops, and Supply Llamas.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed an issue where there was a slight delay when consuming multiple Small Shield Potions.
  • The Grappler will no longer result in an inability to change equipment. 

Gameplay

  • Reduced the edit button hold timing when using a controller.
    • Old School from 0.25s to 0.2s.

Bug Fixes

  • Reload audio for the Double Barrel Shotgun no longer plays twice.

UI

  • Unsupported characters within in-game names will now show up as �, rather than the fallback debugging font glyph that was previously used. Loading the fallback font was causing long hitches for clients, so we've disabled it.
  • Hidden Matchmaking Delay feature has been added to the Options in the Game tab.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed an issue causing the reticle to not appear until after you've switched weapons.
  • Added new generic icons to represent console and desktop platforms for cross-platform play.

Art and Animation

  • Added edge glow to wall bounce pads, only visible from the reverse side. This is to help players recognize when a wall bounce pad is on the opposite side of a ledge in front of them.

Bug Fixes

  • CUBE visual effects will no longer get stuck after a player has left the area.
  • The Grill Sergeant Outfit will now render properly in-game.
    • This fixes the issue where players were seeing a floating head and pickaxe.

Fortnite Battle Royale version 5.40 update overview

Fortnite version 5.40 brings with it the brand new High Stakes event. Included in the heist-themed event is a new Limited Time Mode called Getaway where players have to race to find a Jewel and reach a Getaway Van first to win. Epic Games has also added a new item called the Grappler which shoots out a plunger strapped to a rope which sticks onto surfaces and can be used to pull yourself through the air. On the Android front, Epic has expanded the compatibility list for HTC, Motorola, and Sony Xperia devices and has introduced VOIP support.

Limited Time Mode: The Getaway

Summary

Welcome to The Getaway! In this mode, players will race to find a Jewel and take it to a Getaway Van before everyone else to win the match!

Mode details

Jewels

  • Jewels can be found in special supply drop safes, located along the edge of the first storm circle. The safes take a long time to open, so make sure the area is clear before attempting to claim a Jewel!
  • Four Jewels will be in play on the map AT ALL TIMES. If a player escapes with a Jewel or one is lost in the storm, a new supply drop will bring a replacement.
  • When a Jewel is picked up, it will be visible on the map to everyone for 30 seconds.
  • Carrying a Jewel will give players health & shields over time, but also slow them down by 10%.

Getaway Vans

  • Four TOTAL Getaway Vans will be in the map, three that arrive early in the match and one more that shows up near the end.
  • Getaway Vans float in mid-air, Jewel carriers must build up and then interact with them in order to complete a Getaway.
  • The goal is to find or steal a Jewel and take it to one of the vans in order to secure a Victory Royale.
  • Once they arrive, safe drops and Getaway Vans will be visible on the map at all times.
  • 12 red "Pursuit" Supply Drops land at the very beginning of the match. These carry a variety of longer-range weapons and other items, and are the only way to obtain the new Grappler in this mode.
  • Resource harvesting amounts increased by 50%.
  • Only Rare weapons or higher will be found in this mode.
  • Rifts, Rift-To-Go and Launchpads have been removed to reduce mobility for Getaway Van engagements.
  • Profile Stats (K/D & Wins) are tracked in this mode, but Umbrellas are not awarded for wins.

Grappler added

  • Fire at a nearby object to pull yourself towards it.
  • Can be found in Vending Machines, floor loot, Treasure Chests, Supply Drops, and Supply Llamas.
  • Chain multiple shots together to travel great distances.
  • Has 15 charges. Discarded when charges are depleted.
  • Epic rarity.

Burst Assault Rifle accuracy adjustments

  • When holding down the trigger, the first 2 bursts are more accurate.
  • Spread down sights benefit increased from 35% to 40%.
  • Crouch spread benefit reduced from 25% to 20%.
  • Jumping/Falling spread penalty reduced from 25% to 10%.
  • Sprinting spread penalty reduced from 50% to 30%.

Misc

  • Increased drop stack count for Boogie Bomb from 1 to 2.
  • Increased maximum stack size for Stink Bomb from 5 to 6.
  • Increased maximum stack size for Shield Potions from 2 to 3.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed an issue that prevented audio and effects from playing on other players who are consuming a shield potion.

Gameplay

  • In the moving storm phases, when the storm reaches its destination, it will cause a surge of energy that destroys player-built structures located on the storm wall.
  • Motion controls now function uniformly across input types on Nintendo Switch and mobile. Options have been added to the settings to allow you to switch your motion turn axis.
    • Motion deadzone has been removed.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed an issue causing supply drop landing effects to play twice in some circumstances.
  • Fixed inconsistencies with auto-pickup when landing on pickups, and when pickups are first thrown from containers.

Performance

  • Improved loading performance on Nintendo Switch to reduce issues with buildings loading late (i.e. low-res buildings during skydiving).
  • Fixed a large performance regression related to effects. This was causing poor framerate in the 5.30 release (especially on Nintendo Switch).

Audio

  • Boosted volume of the Remote Explosives placement sound.
  • Improve the quality of the sound played when dropping from the Bus on Mobile/Nintendo Switch platforms.
  • Improve spatialization of the chest open sound for other players nearby.

Bug Fixes

  • Reduced the spam of item pickup "bounce" sounds when pickups are sliding down hills.

UI

  • Emote picker is now available in the lobby, no longer limited to just playing the first emote selected in your locker.

  • The player healthbar and squad healthbars are now moveable in the Custom HUD Layout tool.
  • Dragging-and-dropping an item from the quickbar now drops the whole stack. To split a stack, drag-and-drop with the inventory window open.
  • Dragging-and-dropping an item from the quickbar no longer stops consumable use.
  • UI prompts now appear on vehicles for entering and switching seats.

Bug Fixes

  • Corrected some issues with screen resolution in certain locales on Android.
  • The screen will no longer timeout without user input on iOS.
  • Adjusted steering sensitivity on vehicles.
  • Players are now able to thank the bus driver.
  • Gyro controls are now usable regardless of orientation on iOS.

    • Go to Settings > Display > Navigation > Hard Press Home Button > Turn the feature off
