In this post, which will be updated regularly, we take a closer look at the latest rumors surrounding OnePlus' upcoming OnePlus 6 smartphone.
OnePlus made its name creating beautiful phones with terrific specs, sold for a fraction of the cost of other major flagships. The upcoming OnePlus 6 should continue that trend, but what will it look like? How much will it cost?
Let's take a look at the latest rumors.
OnePlus 6: Name and release date

- OnePlus has all-but-confirmed the phone will be called the OnePlus 6.
- The rumors are coming in much earlier than usual this year, suggesting the phone could drop earlier than June 2018, as previous releases would indicate.
OnePlus threw a bit of a curve ball a year ago when it skipped over the number four in its device naming trend. The OnePlus 3 was followed up with the OnePlus 3T, followed by the OnePlus 5. It turns out, the number four is considered unlucky in China, so the Chinese company skipped it.
There's no evidence suggesting OnePlus will skip over the number six too, so we can assume with relative certainty the next phone from the company will be the OnePlus 6.
The OEM also hinted that the phone will be called the OnePlus 6 in a recent tweet with the rather unsubtle caption "6et ready!". Going along with OnePlus' model number trends, the OnePlus 6 will likely be given the model number A6000.

We also know OnePlus is not working on a successor to the OnePlus X (though many want one) so the chances of the next phone being something like a OnePlus X2 are highly unlikely.

As for release date, the rumor mill is churning awfully early in the year this time around. OnePlus' trend has been to release a new entry in the line, five months later update it with a "T" model, then release a new entry seven months after that. The OnePlus 3 came out in June 2016, and the OnePlus 3T dropped in November that same year. The OnePlus 5 came out in June 2017, and the OnePlus 5T dropped in November 2017.
In all four cases stated above, rumors didn't start popping up online until well into Spring, so stories popping up now could mean the OnePlus 6 might come a bit earlier than past phones.
OnePlus 6: Specs and features

- The OnePlus 6 should be powered by the Snapdragon 845, as all previous OnePlus phones have adopted the latest Qualcomm chipset.
- Wireless charging could be on the cards, but don't bet on it.
At the end of February this year, a pair of leaked images purportedly of the OnePlus 6 featured two notable design features: a glass back and a "notch" akin to the iPhone X:
While the latter rumor is pretty solid (we'll get to that in the next section), the rumored glass back is quite interesting. The only OnePlus device to feature a glass back was the OnePlus X. If the OnePlus 6 adopts a glass back, it wouldn't just mean an easily-breakable and slippery back; it could mean wireless charging.
The Dash Charge feature on all OnePlus devices since the OnePlus 3, which promises "a day's power in half an hour," is one of the company's most-loved and distinctive features. OnePlus may be waiting for the ability to use some form of fast-charging technology wirelessly before rolling out a capable device.
While it's possible that OnePlus is readying a variant made of glass, no other valid rumors point to a glass back. Even if the photos are legit, they might depict an early prototype design.
The OnePlus 6 will feature the latest Qualcomm chipset, the Snapdragon 845. Each iteration of OnePlus' devices have featured the most recent Qualcomm chipset, so it was pretty much a given, but OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has confirmed the SoC, while also suggesting that it will feature 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of onboard storage.
OnePlus has already started boasting that the phone will offer "the speed you need", so it's fair to assume the OnePlus 6 will be a general powerhouse just like its predecessor, and with those purported specs it's not hard to see why.
In fact, some leaked benchmark scores point to the phone being incredibly fast; it's possible it will have an AnTuTu score of 276,510, making it actually the fastest phone we know of at the moment. Even the upcoming Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S falls behind with a purported AnTuTu score of 273,741:
OnePlus has done shady things in the past with its benchmark scores, so that score is, at the moment, highly suspect.
Finally, a leaked Wi-Fi certification certificate suggests that the OnePlus 6 will run a version of OxygenOS based on Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box.

- In a move that has caused plenty of controversy, OnePlus has confirmed that the OnePlus 6 will feature a display notch akin to the iPhone X.
- Leaked images show a vertical dual-camera, rear fingerprint reader, a woodgrain-style back cover, and a returning 3.5mm headphone jack.
Love it or hate it, the OnePlus 6 will feature a notch at the top of its all-screen display like the iPhone X. All of the leaked images mentioned in the previous section show a device with a notch, but if that's not enough proof, look no further than the words of OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei.

He shared the exact dimensions of the device's cutout (19.616 x 7.687mm), released an official image of OnePlus 6's bezel-free forehead (above), and directed an ill-judged smackdown at notch-dissenters: "learn to love the notch."
While the company isn't backpedaling on its decision, Pete Lau later took to OnePlus' own forums to clarify the comments and perform some much-needed PR damage control.
Lau noted that the OnePlus 6 needed a display that met the firm's rigorous testing standards while also being readily available for high production volumes. The best fit just so happened to have a notch. Lau also argued that more experimental alternatives to the notch, such as the Vivo Apex's pop-up selfie camera, are not currently viable for a mainstream release.
We do know, however, that the OnePlus 6 will feature a compatibility mode that will let users black out the sides of the notch when in landscape mode while using apps.
OnePlus says it has successfully tested the functionality with 1,000 popular Play Store apps. Unfortunately, there's no word on whether there will be a notch toggle like the one Huawei introduced with the P20 series.
Moving away from the notch, it's incredibly likely that the OnePlus 6 will feature a fingerprint scanner on the back, underneath a set of dual cameras. OnePlus included Face Unlock technology to the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T (and then eventually to the 3/3T), but all of the leaked images so far have included an oval-shaped fingerprint sensor that should complement the biometric security.
The Oppo R15 Pro.
In general, we can probably use the Oppo R15 as a rough template for the OnePlus 6 design. Oppo is OnePlus' parent company, and prior OnePlus devices have borrowed heavily from its designs. Judging by an alleged OnePlus 6 image shared by reputed leaker Evan Blass, however, the two may differ in a number of significant ways.
The image (below) shows the rear of the phone with a woodgrain/wood-patterned finish around a metal frame. The look is a clear callback to the original OnePlus One's interchangeable backplates and the much-loved bamboo cover, but it's unclear if this is a brushed effect or an actual wood panel.
If legit, the image confirms that OnePlus is standing by the traditional headphone jack that so many OEMs have jettisoned by now. A vertical dual-camera module, fingerprint sensor, and a USB-C port can also be spotted.
In addition, OnePlus may be readying a special edition variant of the OnePlus 6 to celebrate the release of Marvel/Disney's much-anticipated Hollywood blockbuster, Avengers: Infinity War. We know very little about it at this stage aside from a now-deleted video teaser from OnePlus India, but it is likely to resemble the OnePlus 5T Star Wars Edition, only this time with Avengers-themed branding.
OnePlus 6: Price
The nitty-gritty
- Prices have increased every year since the OnePlus One, if you ignore the anomaly of the OnePlus X. It stands to reason that the OnePlus 6 could be the first OnePlus device to launch above $500.
OnePlus is known for devices with flagship specs at much lower price points, so we can likely expect the OnePlus 6 to continue that philosophy. However, how much cheaper will it be?
With every new iteration of OnePlus devices, the launch price for the base model has gone up.

If the trend stays, the OnePlus 6 will probably be the company's first phone to launch above $500.
Even with a price increase, many flagships are creeping ever-closer to the $1000 mark, so a sub-$600 device with flagship specs would still be quite a bit cheaper. The days of OnePlus being a "bargain" might be coming to an end with the release of the OnePlus 6, but that doesn't mean it won't still be a good deal.
