- Reports yesterday suggest that Samsung is planning to let users order custom cases from its Theme Store.
- A teardown of the Theme Store APK suggested users will be able to create custom cases and download and apply matching themes.
- It is thought that the cases will be available for Galaxy S, Note, and A series phones running Nougat or higher.
Samsung is reportedly going to start selling custom phone cases through its Theme Store. According to SamMobile, users of Galaxy S, Galaxy Note, or Galaxy A series phones running nougat or higher will be able to order a custom case based on the themes or wallpapers in the store.
The report noted that the cases would initially only be available in Korea. There was no word on how many of the themes and wallpapers in the store would be supported.
After these reports originally surfaced, XDA Developers provided a bit more evidence that this is something Samsung is planning. They performed a teardown of the Samsung Theme Store APK and found strings that seem to back up the original claims. The strings suggest users will be able to create and preview custom cases, as well as download and apply themes that match the case.
Samsung's Theme Store originally debuted on the Galaxy S6. It now has a fairly large selection of both free and paid for themes, wallpapers, icons, and options for the always on display.
However, Samsung is not the first company to have thought of the idea of introducing cases that match the rest of the phone. Google first introduced Live Cases for its Nexus phones way back in 2015 and has since continued to sell them for its Pixel models. These cases come with an NFC tag that lets the case update your wallpaper and launch apps by pressing the button included on the case.
The one downside to these cases is that they can be pretty pricey when compared to standard third-party cases. While there is no hint at how much Samsung's version will be, official cases for its Galaxy S9 start at around $30 up to almost $60.
The Google Play Store is filled with theme and wallpaper apps, some of which have more than 100 million installs; I suspect the option to get a case to match the rest of a device would be a pretty nice option for those who love customizing.
