Game of Thrones cinematographer has high praise for LG V30 camera

We had a number of good things to say about the LG V30's camera chops in our hands-on review. Despite having limited time with the device, its photography and videography potential shone through — and we're not the only ones who think so.

David Franco, director of photography for Game of Thrones (it's the show with the swords), partnered with LG to launch its new flagship phone, and recently shot a "day in the life" video entirely on the device. The video was published in an Adweek article yesterday, along with an interview with the cinematographer, though Franco had mentioned filming with the unit at IFA 2017 earlier in September.

"I can say from personal experience that this phone has raised the bar, bringing professional video features to everyone," said Franco in the interview. "In terms of my process when shooting this video, I was able to combine my professional background with the phone's video capabilities. For example, the V30's Cine Video Mode takes care of coloration with Cine Effect. This makes it a piece of cake to select the right color scheme, depending upon your scenery and what kind of mood you want to impart in the moment. You can also control the intensity of the colors and even give it a vignette effect."

The V30 comes with a dual-rear camera setup featuring a 16 MP sensor with a f/1.6 aperture lens, optical image stabilization, and laser and phase detection autofocus, plus a 13 MP sensor with f/1.9 aperture lens. The raw photography capabilities of the camera are already impressive, but combined with LG's new software tricks — like the aforementioned Cine Mode and Point Zoom, which lets you zoom smoothly into any part of the frame — it makes for a formidable overall package.

The V30 is going to be a force to be reckoned with, but the new phone is yet to be officially released in the US, and we don't have a concrete date on when that will happen. We'll let you know more soon, but for now, take a look at what Josh thinks of filming with the LG V30 in video above.
