Report: Google, Amazon, and Apple join bidding war for Toshiba’s flash memory unit

A few months ago, Toshiba decided to put its NAND flash memory division up for sale to make up for the loss of its US nuclear unit (Westinghouse), which filed for bankruptcy protection. The company already has quite a few bidders including Western Digital, South Korean chipmaker SK Hynix, and US chipmaker Broadcom, among others.

The total number of interested parties has recently increased to ten. According to a report from the Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun, Google, Amazon, and Apple have decided to join the bidding war.

Both Google and Amazon are interested in buying Toshiba's flash memory unit, as that would allow them to make their own data servers. Apple, on the other hand, would be able to use the memory chips, which it's currently buying from Toshiba and Samsung, in its smartphones.

According to The Investor, Western Digital currently has the best chance of winning the bidding war, as it already has a great relationship with Toshiba. The two companies are jointly running Toshiba's key NAND flash production base in Yokaichi. SK Hynix comes in second, while the chances of Google, Amazon, and Apple winning the bidding war are currently unknown.

It will be interesting to see which company will open up its wallet the most and outbid all of its competitors. All of them clearly see the deal as a big business opportunity that can increase their market share and allow them to gain a competitive advantage over their rivals.
