5 Android apps you shouldn’t miss this week! – Android Apps Weekly

Welcome to the 294th edition of Android Apps Weekly! Here are the big headlines from the last week:

  • We received more details on the upcoming Call of Duty mobile game this week. The big news is a battle royale mode similar to Fortnite or PUBG Mobile. It'll feature 100 players with single, double, and four-person playlists currently in testing. It should also have zombies, vehicles, and periodic drop crates.
  • Noodlecake Studios next game is available for pre-registration right now. The game should be a fun and accessible runner-style game. You play as a fruit and you bounce down the side of a mountain. The game features swipe controls, colorful graphics, and hundreds of challenges. It should launch sooner rather than later.
  • League of Legends is apparently on its way to mobile and no, it's not Arena of Valor. Riot Games and Tencent have worked on the game for over a year. However, it probably isn't coming in 2019 due to delays and potential tensions between Riot Games and Tencent about how to monetize the game.
  • Microsoft announced Minecraft Earth this week. It's an AR Minecraft game in the same vein as games like Pokemon Go, Jurassic World Alive, and others. It has a ton of social features and plenty of Minecraft's classic open-world charm. There are also mobs, collaborative structure building, and more. The closed beta should launch this summer.
  • Mario Kart Tour's closed beta is out now. Early reports are that of disappointment. However, we got to try the game ourselves and it's not half bad. It's definitely a step up from most arcade racers, even in its beta state. However, it's not quite the in-depth Mario Kart game you know from the Nintendo Switch. The beta runs for a couple of weeks.

The Eyes of Ara

Price: $4.99

The Eyes of Ara is a PC game with a new mobile port. It plays a lot like Myst and similar puzzle games. You explore around, find clues, unlock secrets, and progress through the game. The narrative builds as you progress and find more clues. The game also features outstanding graphics, solid controls, achievements, and multiple languages. It goes for $19.99 over on Steam, so the $4.99 price tag is more than reasonable for puzzle game fans.

Steam Chat

Steam Chat is, well, Steam's chat in its own standalone app. It works almost like the desktop client. You can chat with people, share various types of files, add friends, and even use the group chat feature. We didn't see a voice chat in the app but we assume that's coming eventually. There are some issues, but most of them are during setup. For instance, you need a confirmation code from the main app to use this one. It's annoying, but it also only happens once.

Daggerhood

Price: $1.99

Daggerhood is a 2D side-scrolling platformer. It plays like most of the ones you've played before. There are obstacles, bad guys, boss fights, and many lava pits to avoid. The character gets a bunch of abilities to help with the obstacles and bosses as well. You get 100 levels, five bosses, various challenges, and more. The game regularly goes for $2.99. However, it's on sale for $1.99 as of the time of this writing.

Tor Browser

Tor Browser for Android officially left beta this last week. It's now a stable release. It features most of the stuff you find in the desktop version. This browser focuses heavily on security and includes tons of protection features such as encryption. The stable version is quite a bit better than the beta version. However, it's not demonstrably different in any sense. If you want browsing privacy, use this.

Pokemon Rumble Rush

Price: Freemium
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Pokemon Rumble Rush is the latest freemium Pokemon game. This one is a surprisingly family-friendly beat-em-up style game. You run through levels with Pokemon and beat down a bunch of other Pokemon. It works well as a kid's game and a time waster. However, there isn't enough depth here to warrant the kind of long play times you see with other Pokemon games. It's cute and fun for a while, though.
