Absolute Drift

Price: $2.99

Absolute Drift is arguably one of the most relaxing arcade car games ever. Players drive through courses and draft around corners. It has a similar experience to games like Alto's Odyssey. That makes sense because it's the same developers. The graphics and controls are very simple, but the game play itself is very satisfying. Some features include three game modes, night time events, free roaming areas, and six unlockable cars. It doesn't compete with something like Asphalt 9: Legends in terms of arcade racing. However, it's definitely a great way to kill a few minutes.

Beach Buggy Racing 2

Beach Buggy Racing 2 is the sequel to the popular Beach Buggy Racing game by Vector Unit. This game has several similar elements to games like Mario Kart and other kart racers. Players race around the track, pick up weapons, and use those weapons to disrupt other drivers. The levels are animated well and the controls are fairly standard for a mobile racing game. The game also includes 40 unlockable karts, kart customizations, online multiplayer, and a few different game modes.. It's an excellent, family-friendly kart racer even with its freemium price tag.

Brawl Stars

Brawl Stars is Supercell's latest game and the biggest launch of December 2018. It's a multi-player brawler with a few different game modes. They almost all feature three versus three game play where players either collect gems, take out specific opponents to earn bounties, steal the other team's safe, and play a weird form of soccer. There is also a one versus one and two versus two showdown mode as well. The mechanics aren't difficult, but the game is highly competitive. You also get leaderboards, unlockable brawlers, and other online social elements. The game already has ten million downloads so it's easily one of the most popular games of the year already.

Command & Conquer: Rivals

Price: Freemium
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Command & Conquer: Rivals is a new strategy game with card dueling elements. Players raise an army with a variety of abilities and duel other players in one versus one action. You deploy your various troops on the game map and control the various zones. The game play is a little slow, but the point is strategy rather than twitchy game action like some other PvP games. It uses a rock-paper-scissor element for unit strength. Some units do really well against a specific type and worse against another type. It's a neat little strategy game, although its reliance on PvP means that there may be some pay-to-win mechanics in the higher ranks.

Gorogoa

Price: $4.99
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Gorogoa is an indie puzzle game from the same developers of Florence. This game is reminiscent of Noodlecake Games' Framed series. Players get a series of comic strip panels. They arrange the panels into the proper order to tell the story. It's driven by its narrative so the story line is one of the most important elements. The game play mechanics are also relaxed. It's just a chill game to play. The hand-drawn art looks good as well. In addition, the developers refer to this as a work of art as well as a game. We think that's a little over-the-top for an indie puzzle game, but it was fun to play. The game runs for $4.99 with no in-app purchases.

ROME: Total War

Price: $9.99
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
ROME: Total War is the big premium game release of December 2018. It's a puzzle game like previous games. Players train large armies, do combat with rival nations, and try to conquer the world. It basically plays like the original version from the mid-2000's. Players also get fast forward and pause buttons to help with strategy or moving things along at a faster clip. For those who haven't played, the game comes with 19 playable factions, massive battles, and city management mechanics as well. The developers were even nice enough to list the compatible devices in the Google Play description. It costs $9.99 with no additional in-app purchases.

Siralim 3

Price: $4.99
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Siralim 3 is a retro style RPG with elements of RPG and monster hunting mechanics. Players traverse the game world and capture various monsters. You raise and fight with those monsters. The game includes over 700 monsters to collect, battle mechanics similar to Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, and hundreds of hours of content. It also boasts no level caps so you could play this forever if you wanted to. The retro graphics and simple controls may turn off those looking for a more modern game. However, that's about the only gripe for a game like this. It's an excellent value at $4.99 because it is so very long.

Star Trek Fleet Command

Price: Freemium

Star Trek Fleet Command is another new strategy game for mobile. This one takes place in the Star Trek universe, obviously. Players collect, build, and upgrade ships, play through the story, embark on missions, and play with (and against) other players online. The MMO aspect includes some huge space battles as well and we really liked those. This one also includes gacha mechanics as you collect various crew members from the various Star Trek shows and movies. It is a bit slow like most games in this genre and there isn't a lot to differentiate it from other games in this space in terms of game mechanics. Still, it should be a fun time for Star Trek fans and fans of these types of strategy games.

This Is the Police

Price: $7.99
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
This Is the Police is an entertaining adventure sim with some strategy elements. You play as police chief Jack Boyd. The goal is to earn $500,000 in 180 days before Jack retires. You accomplish this by walking the line between a good cop and a corrupt cop. Players deploy officers to various crime scenes in a strategic manner while also dealing with the criminal element in less desirable ways. Fun fact, the voice actor for Jack Boyd is none other than Jon St. John, the voice actor for Duke Nukem. The game goes for $7.99 with no additional in-app purchases. It also has replay value since you can take different routes to the same conclusion.

Turn Undead 2: Monster Hunter

Price: Free / $5.49
DOWNLOAD ON GOOGLE PLAY
Turn Undead 2: Monster Hunter is not the same kind of monster hunter game as Siralim 3. In this one, you just hunt down and destroy monsters. The game is a 2D action-platformer with shooter mechanics as well. It's very reminiscent of older arcade games. However, this one comes with a twist. Players can only move one square at a time. In turn, the enemies can only move one square at a time as well. Thus, there is a slower, but more deliberate feeling to movement and action in the game. The game is a little buggy, but otherwise it's a pretty decent play. You can download the game for free with a pro version available as an in-app purchase.
