App developers are pushing the envelope on a daily basis trying to improve and enhance our smartphone and tablet experiences. In fact, so many Android apps come out every day that it's difficult to keep track of them all. It's difficult to usurp the best of the best but if you're getting bored with what you've got and want to try something new, check out the best new Android apps from the last month! You can watch the videos from past months by clicking here! You can check out our selections for the best Android apps from 2017 in the video above!
Assistant Shortcuts is a button re-mapper app. It lets you re-map almost any button on your device to do a variety of different things. Some of the actions include the usual home, back, and recent apps buttons along with toggling the flashlight, toggling rotation lock, and launch any installed application. You can map those actions to your power button, volume rockers, or almost any other hardware button. It doesn't work with every button on every device. However, it is new so we expected that. The main functionality of the app is free. Supporters get a little extra if they choose to support development.
Feedly Lab is the next app from the developers of Feedly. There isn't much here yet, but it follows the same basically functionality of Feedly. It's a news reader app with support for most blogs across most interests. That includes tech, STEM, and even some niche stuff like agriculture. It seems like there are some AI elements as well. However, this is still very early on in development. It should get even more features when it's ready for a full launch. We might not recommend this to people who hate bugs. However, if you don't mind submitting the occasional bug report, this is a nifty little news reader.
Firefox Reality Browser is a virtual reality web browser from Mozilla. It works with VR headsets to browse the web without leaving to use your phone. It has both 2D and 3D immersive modes. Additionally, it supports VR web content when it is available. The app doesn't work everywhere. It's only for Viveport, Oculus, and Google Daydream devices. Thus, don't expect to use this on your every day phone while walking around. Still, it looks good, it's completely free, and the bugs aren't too big of a deal. We really like that popular web browsers are making a push for VR.
Hire is a new from Google for employers. It's a service that manages potential hires with Google products. You can control the entire hiring process from accepting an application to the actual hire from here. The app uses the entire G Suite to generate stuff like lists, graphs, emails, calendar entries, etc. Thus, you can receive an application in Drive, set up a meeting through Gmail, add it to your Calendar, etc all through the Hire app. This is in no way for average users. Thus, we don't expect a lot of our readers to check this out. However, it's a new app and it seems to work pretty well. However, for business users, we really only recommend it if you use G Suite already or are considering using G Suite.
Hyperion Launcher is one of two big launcher releases this month. Hyperion is by the same developers of Substratum (the theming engine). It has a very basic stock Android-style UI and we really enjoy the minimalism. Under the hood, it has a variety of customization options, including theme accents, third party icon pack support, and a bunch of smaller touches and customization controls. It does have Google Feed support, but as a separate plugin download. You can check the Play Store listing for more info on that. It's new, but it definitely came out swinging. We can't way to see this one mature because it's already among the best that we've seen.
Insect Identifier is a new app for identifying various bugs. It uses your camera. Users snap pictures of an insect and the app attempts to identify it. It works for insects, arachnids, butterflies, and almost anything else you can think of. It also contains Wikipedia entries for all bugs in case you want more information. Additionally, you get a log that contains all of the bugs you identified. It's a little rough around the edges, but it's showing a lot of promise out of the gate in an app genre that doesn't have a ton of options. Keep your eyes on this one, bug fans.
Inware is an informational app. The information it provides is about your smartphone. You can get a lot of quick, fun stats here. Some of the stuff it tells you is pre-loaded Android version, whether or not your device has Project Treble support, your various hardware specs, camera details, security patch level, and phone model number. It's true that a lot of this is available in the settings menu. However, we really like that this took all of that information and expanded it to include basically everything about your phone. It's a good way to learn something really fast about the device you carry around all the time. Plus, it's completely free with no ads or in-app purchases.
Poco Launcher is the second big launcher release this month. This is the official launcher of the Pocophone and Xiaomi was nice enough to launch it for everybody. It features a minimal home screen UI and some interesting features like the ability to group icons by color. We're not sure how many people want something like that, but it's cool that the option now exists. Some other features includes an offline phone search, better than average app management, third party icon pack support, and you can hide app icons from your launcher if you want to. The launcher is entirely free as well.
Tapete is an indie app for wallpapers. It takes a different sort of approach to the topic. Every image is custom made by the developer and that's a far cry from the aggregation-style wallpaper apps that we usually see. We don't anticipate this becoming a seriously huge source of wallpapers. However, we do enjoy some original creativity from time to time and this app is that. It has a bug or two, but nothing serious as far as we can tell. The app is entirely free and the collection is small enough to enjoy.
Yahoo Together is a new text chat app. It's a group chat style app similar to apps like Slack and Discord. It features group conversations, a mute button to keep those annoying chats silent at night, and other basic chat features. This one also features photo, document, and link attachments. The thing is that chat apps is a bit of a crowded market, but you really never know when one of these things is going to explode. We don't think Yahoo Together will, but that's mostly because this app still needs a lot of work. The feature set is nice, though, and we hope Yahoo fixes this one up and makes it nice.
